Whoops, you guys are right. I had those two mixed up. Thanks for clarifying!
What is the OS you are running on? If windows you can use explorer to copy it. Got to start and click on computer or do it from the desktop icon. Depending on the version you basically select the drive it is on and double click it.
That opens a folder/directory for that drive. Scroll to you find the one that has the saves. In Win7 that will be the program files x86 (if install as admin) on XP it will be just program files.
Scroll to you find the version of civ, Infrogrammes for C3C. drill down till you get the saves folder and select the file. You can right click it and select copy. The slect the device you want to copy it to and paste there.

I think he is asking for the HOF, which tells you which civs you have won with, rather than a specific save. Sorry I cannot tell you how to do it, but I am sure someone will be along soon to tell you...
No difference, except where the file is located and its name. The HoF in in the same directory as the execute. One less drill down than the saves. You can copy any of the Civ file with the process, al you need is to locate the directory the file is in.
So the file is CampaignRecord.hof?

another newbie q? by me. I've build a military academy in a city but cannot find anywhere [manual or through search] what are the keystrokes to build an army in that city. I've tried right clicking and opening the city window and other possible solutions but no joy.
How is it done please?

It should be in the build queue just like any unit would be. it comes fairly early in the list of choices if I remember correctly.

thank you. It is a unit that has to be built [3rd from the top] and takes quite a few shields [maybe 400?] to do. Thanks for the help.

it is an expensive item which makes it a great "pre-build" item in your capitol (where you can't use a palace pre-build)

A more general question here: I recently started to play Civilization III, I'm messing around on Emperor level. I play random everything, including civs, as I believe it will aid me much in understanding the game.
Now I'm curious if you consider some starting positions not playable (=winnable) at all on this particular level. For instance, I'm on an island (spawned setting=archipelago), with lots of desert and mountains, and only two viable settle locations for some growth. My plan was to go straight for Mapmaking to make contact to other civilizations. Unfortunately Alphabet is not among my starting techs.
To pump science, I found many towns in the ICS-pattern, and immediately switched them to 1-citizen science "farms". Meanwhile, curraghs are exploring the world. However, I already lost three to "deep waters" and one to barbarians
. Bad luck.
I don't know if it is worth continuing, and if I will be able to win in the long run.

My recommendation would be that you start a series of games where you play every civ (even Portugal **Shudder**) Pic a victory condition based on the strengths your Civ provides. i did this in Alphabetical order and it did give me a better understanding of the game.
I'm just not convinced that all random will give you a good handle on the game. it is better to be in control of as much as you can to become more adept at it. i would also suggest that you check out the Training Day Succession Games, I learned more from these than anything else.

2 (cents worth) off-the-cuff comments/tips:
1. Current game: Build The Great Lighthouse so you can (safely) navigate (almost) anywhere in the world.
2. Future games: Play on a HIGHER level than Emperor but with a MORE FAVORABLE starting position. (Viz. Use Moonsinger's MapFinder utility for good start positions.)

At emperor, I think I can win with almost any start, though not necessarily a victory condition I like. However, my objective is not really to win the game but to have fun. I don't think I'll have fun if the start is particularly horrid. When I was newer to the game, I was more likely to play out poor starts. Now I'm more likely to start again if it is lousy, though I don't think I'm that picky about them.
I don't know that every start condition will yield an automatic victory at that level, but most are winnable if you are willing to devote enough time to them. Just be careful that you don't end up frustrating yourself rather than learning. I am not big on abandoning games and I like to spawn random everything maps and just play, but sometimes you need to walk away.
Another option for learning is to joing the GOTM and see what and how other players are doing. Okay, it is a shameless plug for the GOTM, but I love them. It is a chance to have multiple players play the same game and then you can see the different results/approaches.
