Only if it's been upgraded. For example, if you get a leader with a horseman, you can upgrade him to a knight and then get another. Units that have generated a leader are designated as Elite* in C3C but I can't remember whether they were in PTW or the original version.

So I am playing as the Germans, and I'm at exactly 600 AD. Still going with Despotism. Copernicus spawned into Berlin. What does he do?

Copernicus is Germany's first Scientific Great Leader. You can read about GLs in the Civilopedia. Scientific Leaders are different than regular Great Leaders in that they can rush Great Wonders. Regular GLs can rush other buildings (including Small Wonders and your Palace), but not Great Wonders. Scientific GLs can start a small Scientific "Golden Age" but these are pretty much useless. The "scientific golden age" is worse than pretty much useless, it actually has no effect.
What? No. It's just that, if you multiply something that's next to nothing to begin with, you will get next to nothing. Also, Despotism is a crappy government.
Use the Leader to advance a crucial Wonder if he doesn't cause any serious scientific advancement.

I looked there- there's none compatible with the spanish version of the base game.

Good question. It took some digging around, but I'm pretty sure I eventually found it on a lightly-traveled part of the Interwebs. I don't have the Spanish version, but it appears to install 1.29f, and it's definitely in Spanish. The installer seems slightly confused as to whether it's 1.21 or 1.29, but I think it's the latter and they just forgot to update the text somewhere. I can't test for sure since I have the English version, and don't actually have Civ3 installed right now on this computer.
I've attached it to this post. I found it at FileFront here.
Let us know if it works. If so, I can get it added to the list of patches that Bartleby linked to for whoever comes around looking for it next.

under what circumstances will cavalry not attack an infantry
I am led to understand that a fortified infantry with an artillery piece on a hill top in a fortress will not get attacked by cavalry, is this correct, is this the same in anyother circumstances, (fortress on plains, in forest etc), just I have this SID game going

I have made a good start to a Demi-God level game (very high for me) playing Maya. What is their preferred form of government? Any other Maya-specific tips would be welcome.

It works on any terrain. But it has to be a vet Infantry. In some circumstances, when you have an Elite and you are on a hill, you won't even need the Artillery anymore. But I have forgotten the exact particulars.
ETA: It is a real powerful 'exploit'.

The preferred forms of government are pretty irrelevant. It is only that the AI sees you as a little more or a little less favorable if you are in their preferred or shunned government. (Or did you mean something else?)
Maya are good at getting large and developing their land quickly due to the Agricultural and Industrious trait combination. They are only mediocre in other things. For example, they have no UU to speak of and neither are they militaristic, they don't get any scientific or other cultural buildings cheaper or receive any commerce bonuses.
One positive thing about the UU is though, that you can pretty much trigger your Golden Age whenever you want. Of course it might net you one or the other slave too. (And don't forget, Agri also entails that Aqueducts only cost you 50 shields.)

Thanks for the info. I thought different Civs liked particular forms of government. I read the Romans 'like' Republic for example. I didn't realise the AI cared which type one had.
