Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Oh, I'd forgotten corruption. Depending on how many cities you already have, suddenly turning a city there into the Xth city built might give it a higher corruption factor.
Also, justanick is right that you'll get a production boost from building railroads and mines on every tile.

I wouldn't do it -- neither move the town, nor found another inside your established first ring -- just for the chance of eventually becoming able to build the 400(?)-shield IW.
I have only pointed out, that it is possible to found a new city, that can build the Iron Works without "moving" the other city. I agree, that the normal construction of that SW has no priority, but as it is a SW, it can be built in one turn even by a Military Great Leader without any construction costs. In that case it could even make sense to reorder the worked tiles between the neighboring cities.

is there a way to select multiple units? I started playing again after a very long time and I cant remember if there ever was?

I do not think you can select multiple units, but you can move all units on a tile with X, or Ctrl-X for all units of the same type.

And in a(nother) case of pointless control-duplication by Firaxis, pressing J or Ctrl-J will perform the same functions as X or Ctrl-X, respectively.

Bear in mind though, that if these controls are used, then the stack's movement will be limited to the minimum distance that all the selected units can move (which the game may not report accurately -- unless you just happen to have selected the unit with the fewest remaining movement-points).

That is, if you try to move a stack further than that minimum distance, then all the moved units will lose all remaining MPs for that turn, as soon as the least-mobile unit in the stack runs out of MP.

Yes, that will definitely have something to do with it, since v1.07 is the first release of 'Vanilla' (16 tribes total) Civ3, which did not include stack-movement (I'm not sure which version -- or expansion -- added it). To be honest, I'm not even sure how you can still be playing that version on a modern Windows machine, since AFAIK it was only available via CD-installations -- which mostly haven't worked since late 2015!

You really should update your game to at least v1.29f (final patch) -- you can obtain a legit NoCD patch from the German PCGames magazine website:

Or better still, upgrade to Civ3 Complete (31 tribes, fully patched, lots of extras), which is what nearly everyone here plays now. That's available on GOG or Steam, for 5 bux (or less, during sales).

EDIT:
Hmm, the PCGames link I found (now) appears to be broken, sorry

installed the patch and am getting an insert cd error.
Yes, -- as I said, you will need a (legit) NoCD version of that patch. Posting on my phone, my google-fu is crippled, so I couldn't find the right page to repair/replace the broken link -- but you might be able to find it in e.g.Wayback machine...

For multiple units there's also the patch by Flintlock.

But that only does zozzy any good if/when they upgrade to Complete via GOG/Steam

Is it worth moving a core city to build the iron works?

I have a city one tile away from being able to build the iron works. How do I work out if it is worth moving it?

Spoiler Double banana needs to move one north :

If anyone is interested I moved the capital by taking settlers and a worker off, and from starting with the above screenshot in 250 AD (turn 140) I got the IW by 610 AD (turn 176) and was doing the military academy three turn by 740 AD (turn 190). It certainly had value, whether it was worth the opportunity cost I am less certain.

Can anyone explain this? In the Rise of Rome Conquest, I produce fewer raw shields but get more uncorrupted shields?

Spoiler How do I get more with less? :

18 raw, 7 uncorrupted

17 raw, 8 uncorrupted

The citizens in both screenshots are partly working on different tiles. Therefore in screenshot one you only have 34 food, but in screenshot 2 you have 35 food.

Sorry, I guess I was not clear. I have moved a worker from a grassland mine to a grassland irrigation. I would expect this to give me more food and less shields, but actually it gives me more of both, so I both grow and finish the build in three turns rather than 4. How can 17 raw shields give 8 uncorrupted when 18 raw shields gives 7 uncorrupted?

What happens if you move the citizen from Beograd-8 back to to Beograd-3-3?
It reverts back to the above image, it is reversible.

Cool! I can only imagine, this is due to some very strange rounding effect?!
I have already noticed similar effects when playing around with the lux and science sliders: an increase of a slider by 10% can sometimes lead to a decrease of the corresponding output in certain cities...
