Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I have noticed this effect in my last couple of games...

wheres the money.jpg

I don't know why the space goes blank for a palace build... the money is still there.:crazyeye:

One other question about the build queue...

If I remember the order of builds, palace used to be at the top of the building section... it has now moved to the bottom. Can anyone explain this change? it's not vital but I am curious.

Why is it when an AI Civ I've been at war long-term enters my territory (they are "furious" with me) and I tell them to leave, sometimes I get the "leave or declare" and sometimes I get a "withdraw your forces" option? It's irritating when they drop a stack of cavalry in my territory and I can't boot them, giving them another 3 tiles movement deeper into my territory. Anyone know what the trigger is to get the "leave or declare" option?

It depends on the strength of the army, the distance from one of your cities, and how long they've had units in your territory for.

If they're bothering to move that deep into your territory, it might be a good idea to let them get on with it because, more than likely, they're attacking someone on the other side of you: otherwise they'd just have gone straight for a border city. If you try to boot them and they want to attack you and not an enemy, they'll just declare war when you try. Alternatively, you could ambush and kill the cavalry and then attack, and this may sometimes be more advantageous than letting them get away.

Not sure if this is something generally known or an advanced question.

In most of my games, it feels like Bombers are more likely to destroy buildings when they attack then artillery. When I attack a city, I often want to take it over, so I don't like destroying buildings I might need (I can sell them if I don't want to pay the upkeep). As a result, I usually attack stacks in the open with Bombers and use Arty to attack cities.

My question is, are my observations correct? Are bombers really more likely to destroy buildings and not redline units? It's possible that my memory is selective or I've had unusual results.

1. How come my saves aren't showing up in the save directory? Although this sounds like a stupid question, I cannot find the saves I have, even looking in the directory where the games are saved. Another odd observation; I can dl saves and look at them fine.

2. Why isn't my conquests.ini showing up in my Conquests folder?

It looks like this could be Win7 or Vista. If so then the problem is that the game can run in admin or not. I cannot see the highest level. If it is x86 under Program Files, then when the game is running as admin, it can write to the Program files folder.

If not it cannot and will write in User under one of three folders. Often it is Local Roaming. In any event if this is Win7, set the properties to run as admin and it will always be able to save in the saves folder in X86.

Are you by any chance using Windows 7? I had a similar problem in that I couldn't find any saves from after the update. One of the options for the folder (underneath the address) is called "Compatibility Files" and will show them. Checking the properties of the saves gives the following address:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\Conquests\Saves
I have been unable to find that particular address normally, as there is no "AppData" folder within the User folder.

Just like I said, set c3c to run admin. You are admin, mean little. It is what privledge the app has at the time it is running. If C3C is not adminn, it cannot write in Program Files X86 period. When an app cannot write to x86, it will write to a User folder.

You can always find the saves with a search *.sav

PS you can copy them from their current location to x86 save folder.

Are bombers really more likely to destroy buildings and not redline units?

In Conquests, artillery units attack only units until they are all red-lined, but bombers don't attack units preferentially. In PTW, artillery units do not target units preferentially.

In my experience bombers target other planes first, ships second and then defensive units. Buildings/population hits are mixed in at random.

How is 3 buggy?

It is not really, but does have a few crashes (F3, Space Launch).

I didn't know F3 is a known bug, I thought it was just something wrong with my aging computer.
