...My question is thus: how do people play for this long? does any off this stuff they do actually make a difference or is it just needless pedanticism?
When you're an Ex-ChessPlayer, it's hard to get out of the habit of trying to find the BEST moves ALL the time! (That's why they have Time-Limits in chess games!)

There is a lot to what you say...........in that a Fast Finish probably doesn't need that much thought if you get the Overall Strategy right......and some luck with the Map! ;)

HOF games are about milking the game until 2050 AD.
That is the way it USED to be..........Nowadays, the majority of HOF games are Fast Finishes.....where the Score doesn't matter BUT the End-Date does! :)

By the time democracy is discovered, marketplaces and good cities should be in abundance. How's that?
Also, in Democracies, all the extra commerce that you get from the +1 bonus, and the corruption minimisation, and so on... more than compensates for your units. One can easily support a decent sized army in a Democracy, and even a large one at times. :)

Anyway, Im addicted to repubic, havent gotten to try another government besides Monarchy and that was a longggggggg time ago...

I always research Democracy, and go for Shakespeare's Theatre, is that a good wonder? I always manage to make it in my games.

Great for a 20K city, of course. Otherwise, take it or leave it. If the AI research Free Artistry for you, give it a crack. No great loss.

Assume civ A is selling a lux or a resource to civ B for gpt. What happens to the trade if civ B acquires that lux/res from another source? Will they have to keep paying "for nothing" for the remainder of those 20 turns?

Yes. But after the 20 turns period ends they will cancel the trade treaty immediately.

OT: Espoo should be the small town near Helsinki where the olympic village is located, right?
