I just found the 'pedia entry, it's in the Index under Landmark Terrain :) :

I have been forced to engage in an ancient war.
I have better production power than my opponent, so now I can attack. However, many of his towns are of size 1, and when I take them, they automatically get razed and my reputation damaged. How can this be avoid?

Judas, you either just have to wait till the city's cultural borders expand, or till it grows to above size 1. There's no way around it, sorry :(

I did not see the answer to my question in the FAQs so I will ask it here. I can not figure out how to have my legionary unit to continue with the remainder of its movement after it conquers a city. I gave it blitz capability and removed it from being a foot unit but it still stops movement after conquering a city. What am I missing? Thanks.

When it initially moves into the city (capturing it), the territory still counts as being the AI's, hence it uses up a full movement point - or if on a hill, 2 movement points.
That's what you're missing :)

Thanks for the information Gainy bo. That would answer the question with standard movement but I increased the movement for the Legionary unit in a modified scenario. The unit still has more movement left than the terrain subtracts and the Legionary still stops for the turn.

Just a quick question about worker actions. Am I right/wrong in thinking that as general rule of thumb mine glassland/hills to mountains and irrigate plains and deserts or have I lost the plot? :D

Any thoughts would be appreciated

No general rule is really good, actually. If you only have 5-6 grasslands and a lot of hills, you definitely want to irrigate the grass, so you can work more hils. Each city should be looked at individually for its particular needs.

As another example, take a city with a bunch of flood plains and a bunch of desert around it. The floodplains alone will support the entire population of the city (up to size 20 by the time rails come in, easily), so you'll need/want to mine all the desert so that the city has a reasonable balance of food and shields. Road everything, of course.

There's also something to be said for having a few 3-food (irrigated grasslands) squares around for faster growth, or for various MM purposes.

You'll get a ways with your "rule of thumb", but as you progress in skill, you'll probably find that more situations break the rule than have the rule apply.

Question: When dealing with a leader, does choosing "Never Mind..." have any effect on your relationship with that civ? For example, some civ contacts me and wants a trade. I decide not to trade... is it better to say "No way!" right off the bat, or choose "Counter-proposal " and then "Never Mind" ?? Does it make any difference? What if I originally contacted the civ and changed my mind after seeing what they had to offer?

Thanks

syndicatedragon: All the studies I've seen have found no change in attitude by contacting foreign leaders or making lots of counter-proposals. I think you're completely fine, relationship-wise, by checking all deals.

Note, however, that sometimes a leader will come with a special "one-time-offer" and you might not get as good of a deal by checking counter-proposals.

QUESTION!

I'm trying to edit some of the conquests, allowing Conquest an option for the Fall of Rome, and removing the 8 city elimination thingy, however when I add/remove them or turn on all victory options to select them, they don't work when I goto the Civ select screen of scenarios.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the rule might be different depending on whether you are in Despotism or not. There's no point irrigating that grassland in Despotism as it will still only produce 2 food, so you might as well mine it and get the extra shields.

On the military advisor's screen, underneath the view of all the captured workers, it says

"0 Gold"

In 2 years of playing Civ3, i've never had a clue what this is supposed to represent. What gold? Why does it never change? Is it just me?

Thanks in advance :)

I think it means 0 gold to maintain them. Captured workers cost you no gold in support.

How come the railroads don't always automatically connect with the city in the adjacent square? In the following map, I've got a worker who's completed a RR outside of Berlin 2, yet Berlin 2 isn't connected. Note the RR command is no longer available. I've still got coal in Berlin 2, and there're not resisting -- there are 2 happy laborers there. There's the same problem with Gouda in the upper right.
