Great Library

I'm in the process of reading SirPleb's "Going for Sid" (Great Post BTW) and am a bit confused about one of the tactics he employs. After gaining the Great Library, he gives it away when two other Civ's gain Education. When he retakes the city containing the GL some time later, he gains a good part of the Middle Ages Tech Tree

How does this work? He was able to gain techs like Military Tradition, which are way past education (cancels GL?).

Tman65: Let's assume you've just completed the Great Library in the city next to your capital and are just finishing research on Republic. If you finish research on Republic and then turn off research and just save gold. A long time passes and you notice a couple of the AI are building railroads. You declare war on the current owner of the GL and send a SOD of swords & catapults over to the GL city. You then take the GL city. When the next turn starts you'll get all of the techs that are known by any two AI that you know, all the way past steam power (railroads), the new techs will keep rolling in until all known by 2 or more AI are now known by you. The Great Library will then expire at the start of the next turn (since you now have Education). You now are near the top of the tech heap and have a big chunk of cash to rush / upgrade things with.

To put in simpler terms the check for if Education is known and the GL is obsolete is before the techs are delivered.

What is the best way to figth FP bug in C3C 1.22? It's really nasty to see that FP works almost only for the city where it is built

@denyd: So I guess you want to give the GL away BEFORE you are GIVEN Education because then it would become obsolete and you wouldn't get any more FREE techs?

You recapture the GL BEFORE you have education and, even though the other AI's have gone PAST Education, you still get ALL the techs that the 2 MOST ADVANCED AI's have discovered.......including Education?

In case this is not clear.......it's because I'm somewhat in the same boat as Tman65 (No relation)!? :crazyeye:

That is correct

As long as you don't know education yet, you'll get all the techs known by at least 2 AI that you know before the GL expires.

What some people do is build the GL after literature and the turn off research until the AI gets Theology and the start researching the bottom tier and give the GL away. They can then research all the way to Military Tradition before shutting off research again. That way you've got Cavalry for offense, Muskets for defense and Cannons for bombardment. You're still stuck with galleys as your most advanced ship, but that's normally not an issue. Then once you get the message that two tribes have started Universal Suffrage, you retake the GL and you're instantly in the Industrial Age, probably with all the first level techs, plus at least 1 of the second level techs. I suppose you could wait until 2 AI have started Hoover or the UN and get an even bigger jump, but you then risk having to face tanks & infantry with muskets & cavalry.

That is VERY GOOD NEWS! HURRRAY!!! :D
Wait I don't have 30 days yet :(

Is there a way to find out how many units you've lost? That is besides workers. Like it was in Civ2?

How do you use downloaded scenarios? I downloaded the Vietnam War scenrio and moved the biq to Conquests\Scenarios, but when I try to start it, som error appears, something about some text file.... Fill me in please.....

Good ol' pen and paper, sadly. :(

That's really a question for the mod maker in the thread that you d/l'd the scenario from. As they designed it, they would be better equipted to answer it.

Is there a good reason for artillery to not be airliftable? It seems pretty illogical (tanks and mech inf but not artillery?), and it sure is annoying, does anyone think it's important to game balance?

Oh and Turner 727, if I'm reading your endnotes right, congratulations!

Thanks!

I've set up all non-airliftable units to be airlifted. Considering that you can fit the state of Rhode Island in a C5-Galaxy, it does seem a bit unusally for me that some can't be airlifted. I also recall seeing pics of helicopters transporting tanks in Vietnam, so I've also set up helo's to transport all as well.

Excellent . . . I understand the game implications of airlifting armies (and therefore MGL), and I'm thinking about settlers, but I will definitely make arty airliftable. Does anyone know where I can get an icon that'll do for Self Propelled Guns? This would be artillery with the same bombard stats but 2 movement points, and show up at motorized transportation.
