Cool Thanks guys, what i didnt realize was the need for barracks to upgrade old units.... i always manage to get Sun Tzu's art of war as soon as its available, but that only works for 1 continent.

ahhhh, but you left out an important detail, only it conquests/ ptw (not 100% sure about ptw)
I'm sure about PTW 1.27f, since I play it all the time.

Check the Civlopedia entry for the units. It should tell you required resources, upgrades to, and obsolete with.

I may be wrong, but think I remember something in vanilla Civ III about that it was impossible to upgrade to a UU, e.g. to upgrade a knight to a cossack? Can that be right?

I think that in Vanilla unpatched the UUs broke the upgrade tree. That was before I started playing but I think it came up in an outdated discussion of which civs were best. However it has been long fixed.

There's a certain logic to elephants or Samurai breaking the horse upgrade path, but I bet it really messed up the game.

Now that you mention it, it was that way on first release.

Wow, that was a long time ago - at least 3 years.

Another question :)

I've got a lot of units fortified of the same type. Now I need to activate all of them ... is there a quick way instead of pressing F3 and activate them all one by one ?

And ... what is the defensive bonus for a fortified unit ? Thanks ;)

No, sorry, there isn't. At first I thought you meant how to wake units in a stack, but then the F3 function doesn't make sense.

EDIT: fortified unit gets a 25% bonus.

Don't know what is a stack ... but I've some units fortified in a city, some in other city and so on ... I'd like to wake them all but there isn't a way :( thanks a lot !

A "stack" means multiple units on the same tile. If you right click a stack, you get a menu with the option "wake all". It only works for units on the same tile though.

The easiest way is to cycle thru the city screens using the arrows at the top. Start with your capital, right click and activate the unit as you come to them. When you get back to your capital, you know you have them all. When you close the city screen, the units will be active.

Why? Do you want to upgrade them all at once?
In that case, activate one unit and press Shift+U. All units of the same type that are in cities with Barracks will be upgraded.

I think elite units will be upgraded as well though, so you may not want to do a mass upgrade.

I assume he's mobilizing his attack units for war? Or else waking his workers because he just discovered Steam Power and coal. I wish there was such a command, but no. And mass upgrading does hit elite units, which I don't think is too much of a problem, but it also will upgrade regulars which you might want to disband or leave unupgraded if you have a mostly veteran military. If I'm not mistaken simply waking the units you don't want included in the mass upgrade and then hitting spacebar to end their turns before doing the shift+u to upgrade should exclude them.

How do you move the command keys from the bottom middle of the screen to the middle right of the screen? I accidentally activated this function when my slippers fell on my keyboard after i tried to kill a bug on the ceiling directly above me.

thanks, it psyched me out for a second cause i never knew about that function  *picks up and start reading the manual*

Does anybody know if there's any particular order you cycle through the cities when you use the arrows? Doesn't seem to be alphabetical. Is there a way to determine an order?

Thanks.

Is the the order they are in the array stored by the computer. Basicly it is the order they were built, but if any cities are razed before you found a city, the new city will take the old slot.

Hope this make sense.

Each city is assigned a number. The first city built will be 000000000, the second will be 000000001, then, 000000010, and so on. When the game runs out of numbers (512), you can't build anymore. The order is the order of numbers, which explains the razed city/new city thing.

That's what I think at least.

I don't think so. I will select an inelligible unit and hit shft-u to u/g another unit that used all its move points to get to a barracks.

I would move all undesirables out of towns w/barracks.

As for waking a bunch of units, right-click wake-all on cities/stacks is probably the fastest.

Backspace and delete?! I never knew that!
