In a recent GOTM, I was weak against the Aztecs, when they declared war on me. After the 50 Chasqui Scouts & 50 MDI & 50 LB died by attacking my fortfied Mech Infantry (without killing any), they were weak against me

@Denyd: :rotfl:
I bet that was one of the more amusing IBT's you've ever seen!

On the "weak" versus "strong" advice from "Corporal Punishment"...

For those trying to understand this part of the game: If you look at that formula on the previous page you'll understand that the AI tends to undervalue bombard units. If you have rails all over the place, a couple dozen Cav and a big stack of Artillery, the AI (and your military advisor) and your Military Advisor, will think that is "weak", even though a human could decimate an invasion force with those units.

Yeah, there don't seem to be any odds too steep for the AI to attack. I lost a city defended by an infantry army (and a few wounded cavalry) to an Iroquois horde of longbowmen, knights and guerillas. Killed over 50 of them but lost the city and the army and the MGL that one of the cavalry produced defending.

On the other hand, I pillaged the hell out of the Sumerian homeland with an infantry army, and they never attacked it, even when it was standing on open plains in front of their ridiculous capital. The only shelled it with artillery, and I know they had more artillery sitting around that could have been brought in by rail that they didn't use.

And the Moral of that story is......Keep Armies OUTSIDE the "city square" if you don't want them to be attacked! ;)

Is there a thread someplace that details how C3C calculates a player's score in the epic game?

Maximizing Your Score
Author: SirPleb; Date Posted: 3/19/02

Score calculation

The scoring works by averaging your per-turn scores throughout the game. For each turn a (hidden) per-turn score is calculated as:

(Territory + HappyCitizens*2 + ContentCitizens + Specialists) * Difficulty

The total of all your per-turn scores is divided by the number of turns played so far to get your actual game score. I.e. your actual score is the average of your per-turn scores.

"Territory" is the number of tiles which are within your sphere of influence.
"Difficulty" is 1 for Chieftain, 2 for Warlord, 3 for Regent, 4 for Monarch, 5 for Emperor, 6 for Deity.

Early win Score Bonus

If you win before 2050AD, you get a bonus which is added to your regular score. The bonus is calculated as:

(2050 - FinishYear) * Difficulty

If you finish before 10AD, use the year as a negative number in the calculation.

Example: Winning in 310BC in a Regent level game would get a bonus of (2050-(-310))*3 = 7080.

Other Factors in Score

Almost nothing else affects your score. Wonders, cultural value, military size, science learned, etc. - none of these affect the score. There is one tiny exception for learning "future tech" but it counts for so little in score that it is not worth devoting any energy to it.

Article is here

Hope it helps

Well heck, I could have just left it in my capital, it would have been safe as a the devil.

Questions: I was recently playing a game as the Iroquois, and two strange things occurred.

First: It was 1750, and I possessed 99% of the world's area (only conquest victory was enabled). I had been in monarchy for almost the entire game, and decided to switch to democracy just to see how much gold I would be making. After a long period of anarchy, I switched. A turn later, right in the middle of the "beginning of turn" stuff, i.e., city production et al, my entire civ plunged into anarchy. Obviously I had all kinds of luxeries (goes with owning 99% of the world), so my citizens had mostly been happy under monarchy (I didn't get a chance to check happiness in democracy -- i went into anarchy first). Would the anarchy have resulted from massive war weariness carryover? I had been at war for more than 2000 years, and was still at war with the Greeks (who held one city) when I switched to demo. I didn't think that war weariness carried over... Alternatively -- does starvation cause vast unhappiness? Most of my cities starved during my first period of anarchy between monarchy and demo. I can't think of any reason for the resulting [second] anarchy.

Second: Using bombers (lethal bombard), I eliminated all of the defenders of the last Greek city. I then flooded the area with modern armor and battleships (it was a coastal city). Every square except the city center was occupied. I don't have a screenshot, but there were no defenders in the city center -- not even an artillery. Anyhow, I fooled around a few turns (see above) before deciding to end the game. Still with no Greek units on the screen, I moved a modern armor army into the city -- only to see a TOW Infantry unit magically appear and do battle (and lose). The game then ended normally. I was under the impression that if a military unit from an opposing civ is occupying a city square, citizens of that city can't work it (no food/shields/gold) -- so how would that TOW Infantry have been made? It was definitely not a conscript (it had 3 hp, and the size of the city -- for this entire sequence -- was size 1). Even if my assumption about production elimination (by occupying squares with my units) is wrong, why wouldn't the TOW have shown up before I attacked?

Are both (or one) of these bugs or am I just missing something obvious?

For the first thing, I believe that war wariness does carry over, you just don't experience it in Monarchy.

For the second, I've seen reports of this type of thing before, I think it may be a legitimate bug. As for how it got there, it was probably rushed, but should have appeared before that.

A couple of things WW:
#1 Yes, unless there is a period of peace between wars, war weariness is hiding there waiting to bite you in the butt.

#2 Did you have marketplaces in those cities? If you have a market, then the first 20 people would be content (if you have 8 luxuries & a market) unless war weariness takes over.

#3 Each turn with a unit in the enemies land counts towards WW

#4 If the AI was in Monarchy/Democracy/Republic, he could have cash rushed the unit (it wouldn't be a conscript then).

Edit: SOW beat me to most of the answers. One possiblilty for not seeing the unit would be if it was loaded onto a ship (was the city coastal?).

I'd bet money that's exactly what happened. I remember a "killer galley" in GOTM31 that had a ground combat unit in it that needed to be killed before an Iroquois city would fall.

...and that TOW infantry might have been upgraded from a Guerilla, who might have been upgraded from a longbow... He might've been hanging around a long time...

Another thing about the TOW: It could have been drafted. (Was it conscript?)

Yesterday didn't SOW say
I would prefer skipping SOW though.

I've seen units hiding in boats before, but the boat was visible as the defender.

Yes, actually I did. Something about references to female pigs....I dunno.
(Boy you really lurk everywhere, eh?)

I prefer Sesn, and I won't split hairs about Sens - common typo. Skip the pig though. :)

Sorry for the [offtopic]

I have a question. I use to play Civ3 alot, and I remember having more unit option buttons at the bottom, like "Irrigate", "Mine", etc.. I still have the default ones there. The ones that are gone are the ones like "Stack Units", "Stack Like Units" etc.. I dont remember how I got these before, If it was a patch or an option to select. I haven't done anything to the program since I last played, so I am bumfounded. Any Ideas?

Hello BTW. Nice place you got here. ;)

Welcome to CFC LordKathen!!!!

I cannot remember if it is only in PTW and Conquests but I think the button you are looking for is in the options under preferences. Somthing like show advanced unit options or somthing like that :D

Well, I found that option, but that only adds/deletes certain default buttons. These buttons were not default to the origanal game, if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the reply, and thanks for the welcome.

Oh, no HTML, cool.
