Quick Questions and Answers

If the AI has an embassy in your capital, it sees faster what you have and may decide to attack quicker.

You can give it away in the beginning for a quick 25 gold/AI.

There are some CS quests which ask for discovery of another nations's lands. If you have already met units, getting an embassy over there will do the trick if you want the quest done faster.
In Renaissance the AI knows where to sent its spies. I found out that I can prevent a lot of spying on large maps by not accepting embassies from later met civs. But at my current difficulty level I am usually in the lead. On higher difficulties I guess it´s more important to know the cities of the enemy. E.g. usually my second largest science city never (hardly) gets targeted for spying.

1) How can I see the full promotions of a unit. At the moment I cannot tell a Galleon-destroyer from a Privateer-destroyer. Where the former is better at attacking cities - due the iron-clad bonus and the later can catch ships.

2) I am running civ V on Win7 in DX11 mode. If I alt-tab the game stays in the back-ground and does not minimize - generating a lot of CPU load on my laptop. Is there a secret config entry where I can same some CPU and heat?

So there is no real benefit to having an embassy in other civs capitals? Isn't it necessary to trade resources with them?

Also, in addition to essmene's question, what is the big difference between playing Civ V on DirectX9 and DirectX 11? I have a X64 5000+ Duel core (2.6GHz) with 4GB RAM, and a brand new XFX (Radeon) R6670 2GB memory graphics card that handles both. Which DirectX would you suggest to play the game with?

Embassies are required for Research Agreements, but not required to trade resources.
Embassy -> Declaration of friendship (DoF) -> Research Agreement

DoF's are the base for most agreements - e.g. defensive pacts. They are the only way to make friends - also bind you to your word. If you attack a friend - you get a severe diplomatic penalty and are bound to suffer denouncement and war.

Unless the other civ has a bad standing - or you have tried every other means.

In my case I had a DoF with the mongols - I forgave him for spying - I asked him to stop spying - I denounced him for spying and later declared war (as in the end I only had declare ware or forgive left) and I did not suffer any diplomatic consequences.

Can some experienced player confirm that if a friend is breaking his promise (e.g. don´t settle, spy, convert) - that you are entitled to attack an (old) friend?

Do you gave to have a road on an improved resource tile for it to actually be part of your empire and provide the resources benefits?

No. Just has to be inside your culture borders and improved (e.g., mine, plantation, whatever). If you create a Great Person tile improvement on a strategic resource, it will connect that resource to your trading network; doesn't work for luxuries, though.

Hi,

in my game I noticed that one ally and one friendly city state are at war with another allied city state of mine. They have been fighting and pillaging over one another for quite some time and I have no idea to end this blood feud.

If i declare war on one ally and make peace they might follow but my ally statues will drop to -60. Anyway this is totally weird since for wars they tend to follow their nation brothers.

Have you seen this - (re)solved it?

Two possibilities come to mind: The AI is just picking on that CS because it can, or it's a hang-over war from before your CS ally became your ally (i.e., they were previously allied with someone the AI was at war with).

In either case, you should be able to bribe the warring AI to make peace with your CS ally.

I'm not sure why I haven't bothered looking into this until now, but is there any disadvantage to chopping down the forest on deer tiles on plains? Game is showing no reduction in food or production, just that it will net me 20 hammers in doing so.

Don't think so. Forest has base yield of one food and one hammer, regardless of what is underneath it. But plains also have base yield of 1 food and one hammer, so chopping the forest shouldn't change the base tile yield, and the deer and camp are just extra.

Civ 5 Video graphic problem
Hi ,I am playing Gods and Kings expansion on my laptop and facing problem with the game after turn 50.
My system configuration is -

Dell XPS L502X -x64 based PC
Processor-Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz, 2001 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
RAM- 4GB DDR III
Video Card-NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M

I am playing this game offline with Dx11. After turn 50 I start getting glitches in background sound and then by turn 55 there is video lag .ie I click on any action and the system will respond after a minute or two. Then in order to overcome the problem I have to save the game and exit to windows and then restart the saved game again. It will work for a few turns and then the problem starts again. In the game options All my settings are maxed to 100.Do I need to change the settings.I don't want to play this game in DX9 so I haven't tried that.
Is there any way to fix this problem?

I don't have too much specific to offer, but I see similar kinds of lag in my games, after a while. Not as frequent or severe as you describe. In general, make sure your graphics drivers are all up to date. Also make sure you've gone into online mode recently to get the most recent updates for the game. You can try playing in online mode full time, or with DX9, but those shouldn't affect much. You can also tweak some of the graphics settings downward without much loss of visuals but decent gain in performance. In particular, I find the mid settings for fog of war and water animations give big gains without looking bad. Windows and Civ 5 are both known for their memory leaks, so that's likely what you're running up against. The more units and terrain features you're animating, and the higher performance levels you're running them in, the faster the leaks will accumulate to the point of unplayability.

Hope that helps some. You can try exploring the tech support forum for additional help.

Thanks a lot for your input.I found a solution elsewhere and it worked for me. in the config.ini file we have to set the value "EnableGameCoreThreading = 0". This works for both the dual core as well as 4 core processors whichface lag in the game.

Is there a possibility to get older versions of mods for Civ V G&K? I started a game in december (with G&k Enhanced Mod v1.12.11 (v.1) and Civ V Unofficial Patch v2.3.2. (GK) v.1 - some days ago I wanted to play offline - but all the mods were deleted. When I was online again the newest updates of the mods were installed automaticly and now I can't finish my old game.
I did not find a kind of archive for former mod-versions yet - is there one?
Thanks for help!

What up with the AI CANCELLING research agreements? So I spend my hard earned gold and they cancel and I LOSE my money?

Just wondering about something. I've noticed before that when you go to make a Declaration of Friendship with another civ, that the tool tip for the button says that "making this declaration will often deter aggressors", or something to that effect.

Is this true? Does having DOFs with other civs make you less likely to be attacked?

I have a problem. I illegally downloaded Civ5 Moderator Action: removed
