Quick Questions and Answers

I just made a great engineer and I couldn't use it to hurry production on anything, in any city.

Great engineers can only be used to hurry buildings and wonders, not units or projects. They have to have movement points left to use the ability, so if you've just moved him into a different city you might have to wait until the following turn. Beyond that, make sure you're looking for the button in the right place, people have missed it before. :)

I have a few questions (I'm playing on Prince) :

1. I've read that every city should be self-efficient in terms of happiness. Is there a way to see how much happiness a single city produces?

2. What's the point then in having luxury ressources? Are they only focused for the Golden Ages then?

3. At which point do you guys decide which city becomes speciallized and which not?

4. Which one is the safe limit to set a city close to another civ?

5. For other versions of civ I had like a script to expand: You build worker, warrior settler. You found a city and you build the same thing. In Civ V, if I do that I go bankrupt and the empire becomes unhappy. Which one is a good strategy to quickly expand in the game?

Thanks a lot guys

1) I think each city gives 2 unhappiness plus 1 unhappiness per population. You can build a colloseum or other happiness-producing building balance that. Or you can improve a new resource (or a duplicate that you can trade for a new one). And no, you can't easily see how much each city is contributing that I'm aware of.

2) Lux resources give +5 happiness (duplicates do not). In the early game they are essential to balance pop growth and expansion. In the later game, buildings/civics become more important.

3) I'm really bad at specializing. The tile yields are so similar, about any city can be specilized for any purpose. So its mostly just about matching the buildings you want to build with each other and with the tile improvements you make. So not until you can build different types of buildings does specialization have much meaning. Perhaps it would be good to plan ahead and get the terrain you want for the type city you want. But like I said, I rarely do that as most my cities are puppets by the time I can specialize, and you have no control over what they do.

4) There isn't one, except maybe being on another landmass. If you don't do it, they will settle near you and then complain that you are settling too close to them. :crazyeye:

5) I think a scout or monument is more useful first build. You'll need worker techs to make the worker useful, and you'll want culture to get your first few SP's faster. If you have a resource that can be improved immediately, worker first is OK. Rapid expansion is very tough if you don't get lots of resources and find world wonders. You'd have to keep cities small to avoid being very unhappy. And all the national wonders are harder to build if you have lots of cities. The AI don't expand all that fast in my experience, so you should only expand if you have excess happiness. Happiness golden ages are not that important... I'll usually get the first one, sometimes two, but almost never more than that. Not something to break your neck for... you can use great people for golden ages, and they are much easier to get.

I play at emperor... you can get better tips from the better players, probably. :goodjob:

2. Luxes can be very useful tools. You can build Colosseums and such to keep happiness at a reasonable level while selling your luxuries and OBs for gold that can be used to fuel whatever projects you're working on.

Is there a way to turn off AI moves and combat? Especially in the late game it's very tedious to have to see e-v-e-r-y bombing run the AI does on neighbouring border cities...

The short answer is yes.

The long answer is: (a) you can start your game using the Quick Combat option, but then its the whole game where you don't see the action, which can be troublesome if you aren't used to it, or (b) at any time you can go edit your .ini file using Notepad by setting the line designating show combat to =0, (or is it set disable combat =1 ?) then start up the game anew. How specifically to do this is posted elsewhere (I believe in some of the Game of the Month TSG game threads, among other places).

Does 2K plan to release any patches for diplomacy soon? It seems to be the most pressing issue at the time. I've had several games where I sign a open borders pact one turn, then be declared war on by that same civ the next.

Also, whats the best way to get multiple cities with pops over 30?

That's nothing. I have had AI contact me several times to declare war on me when we are already at war. :crazyeye:

How do I keep the cursor from scrolling across the terrain when it gets to the edge of the screen? I looked at the .ini files, but don't see the option to turn it off, unless it is worded strangely and I missed it.

From the main menu select "Options". Then select Interface Options:
There are various options next to "Bind Mouse" Never, Full Screen only, Always.
I believe you might also be able to select Options from the top bar menu while in game.

On the Diplo page I can find what leader has built which Wonders...but is there a place I can find in what city they are built?

There seems to me no way of liberating a city once it is puppeted by your Civ (for example in the desire to bring back a defeated Civ at some later point in time). You are only given one shot to decide upon taking control of the city...am I right? Also you can't liberate a puppeted city of someone you are war with in the desire to create peace or even open negotiations toward peace.

Hi, new to the board.

I have a question about English Longbowmen. They are listed as having an extra range than Crossbowmen, but they are only listed with a range of two, same as the Crossbowmen. Is there something I am missing?

If you have revealed their territory the notification will center the map on that city and you should also be able to see the Wonder on the map, but other than that there's no way to tell AFAIK.

Unfortunately (possible bug) either the Wonder is not showing in the city when examining it zoomed in or multiple citys have same structure (in my case the Pentagon appeared in several cities at the same time).
