Quick Questions , Quick Answers

Yessir. I am 100% sure. All I can think is that this started when I updated from the stable release 40.whatever to SVN earlier this week. Since then in my two play throughs I haven’t been able to make tribes. Is there a cache or something I can clear? Would something like that even cause this? I’m very confused.
If your UserSettings folder is still the same as you had on v40, try deleting it.
It will be recreated when starting the game up again.

I know it's a rude and stupid question, but are you sure you UPDATED properly?
As in, totally wiped the old folder and correctly exported the new version into an empty folder, right?
I expect you to say YES, but you never know.

perhaps... no. I did not wipe the folder only replaced destination files. Would that cause this?

It very well could.

If a file got deleted or renamed, then just replacing the old files would leave old files in there that could cause issues.

well, damn. Ok. Last two questions. Would I have to start a new save after fixing the folder? And, assuming I would... is there a quick way to check whether or not it’s working?

I have no idea if a new game would be needed or not... There's not much precedence for what you did there, it's unknown territory so to speak.

I would guess it isn't needed, but can't be sure if some game state data is corrupt and stored as such in your save.

Hmm, start a new game on ultrafast gamespeed on a dual size map with no AI's, hit ctrl+shift+x and select 75 ish turns. That is AI autoplay btw.

When you get back control of the game it should be close to tribalism tech, and most likely not past sedentary lifestyle.

Since the map is small and there's no AI's the 75 turns should pass real quick.

K. Deleted entire mod. Updated SVN folder, pasted content into mods/caveman2cosmos. Made sure UserSettings was deleted. Fired game up, used the settings you recommended, it did get me to just after tribalism.... and I still can't build a tribe. Sigh. I'm going to try a restart and if that doesn't work reinstall the game from square 1 I guess, then check.

Delete vanilla civ4 ini file, its here: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword

I just checked the LATEST SVN - and it works (some Cheat Engine help to get there fast, lol).
So the BEST option would be to wipe everything, re-download SVN from scratch, and then EXPORT it to an empty folder, not just copy-paste.
Not sure if there even is a difference - but why risk one to begin with?

I'm guessing that after an update, the options had changed so now this game has you saved as being on One City Challenge option even though you didn't choose that yourself. You might be able to change that through the world builder.

But if that's the case there's probably a lot of other issues.

I’m not sure which change did the trick. But someone’s suggestion appears to have gotten it working. At least in one test. Running another to confirm. Thanks.

Could you post a screenshot of your unit options in city view? Could be some other units are missing or something. Accidentally selected combat unit only filter maybe?

I have a totally separate question, which is eons old, but I always forgot to ask it.
How do you DE-select a unit?
Namely, when you are at the End Turn phase, and then you accidentally click a unit that is already assigned a good task.
I then need to find a sleeping unit, select that one instead, and then probably just SPACE it.
But is there a way to simply DE-select a clicked unit, huh?

Another similar UI question.
You can select ALL units of a type on the plot, but what if I have a hundred of them there, but I only need some 30.
As of now, I know of no other way to select those 30 units, except by doing so MANUALLY.
Which is, admit it, STUPID.
Is there (or are you planning to make) a way to MOUSE-select a group of units - or any similar alternative that isn't "ALL or NONE"?

Thanks.

Press W.
I think that does what you want in most cases.

How exactly do you use the Automate Protect command? I am attempting to tell a stone-thrower to protect a gatherer; clicking on the button gives me a cursor, but I can't seem to get it to target anything (or if I am, it's not clear it's activated).

I'm not sure it works correctly with units ALREADY doing stuff (Workers, who are also the typical "culprits" for this question to begin with).
It sure doesn't DE-select the unit, though, and I'm asking for that specific feature in the first place.
I think the lack of this interaction option is one of the STUPIDEST errors of Civ, huh.
IF there is no way to do it, that is, which I'm not so sure about.

I don't think it's working - hasn't been since AND and though a few attempts have been made, nothing has quite been a dedicated enough effort to ensure whatever isn't working right has been corrected and I think its thus still deeply flawed.

How do I remove wanted status? My rogue is wanted so I removed him from both my territory and the other empire's territory on my island. He's been hanging out in the wilderness away from any borders for over 20 turns.

I find only sending him way out to sea works reliably.
