Ramones punk band founder Tommy dies, aged 65

Tommy Ramone, the last surviving founding member of seminal US punk band The Ramones, has died aged 65 in New York, the group has announced.

The drummer died in hospice care on Friday following treatment for bile duct cancer, US media report.

I confess I have never been a huge Ramones fan, but there is certainly no denying the huge impact he (and the band of course) had on music.

Yeah, ditto.

I used to live a couple of blocks from their condos in the East Village.

Why were the Ramones deemed as so important, though? Were they the first US-based 'punk' band?

I only know their main hits, which are very cool, but obviously the band members look like they want to kill themselves.

Tommy Ramone, aka Thomas Erdelyi, was actually the band manager who eventually played the drums on the first few albums after they couldn't find a suitable drummer. He would sit down at the drums and show prospective drummers what they wanted, so they eventually just decided to use him instead.

Here they are in 2002 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tommy is the one who looks like he doesn't belong.
