Have anyone here have taken a look a kinesics, the field of non-verbal communication such as:facial expression, eye contact, gesture, and body posture? One of these components is one of the facial expression that strikes my eye is the "eyebrow flashing."

Take this notion;when people greet each other at a distance, wishing to show that they are ready to make social contact, they raise thier eyebrows with a rapid movement, keeping them raised for lets say-about one-sixth of a second.Other times the raising the eyebrow is a signal for being pleasant by acknowledging another but carry on to walking away or changing the visual range toward another person or object from the subject that was targeted by the eyebrow raising. This is what I do when i accidently make an eye contact toward another person but do not want to engage an verbal interchange.

I don't know if this behavior has been noted in many parts of the world or if this is consider universal as it is in my region in Ohio(though I remember that a student at Kent State University from Japanese descent says that eyebrow raising is consider indecent).

So,what are your culture or personality that are associated with a specific facial behavior of "eyebrow raising" means to you?I suspect that whatever culture you inhabit or personality quality you possess, convey different in meaning in comparison to what make me who I am and my culture.

Im really great at deciphering body language, posture, eye contact and all those nonverbal cues. I can usually develop a fairly accurate 'dossier' on a complete stranger in a matter of minutes, just by watching him or talk to someone else (I know its accurate because often later I get to know the person). Ive got to say though that Ive never really focused on eyebrow movements too much. Its interesting Im going to look into that.

The only time I notice using my eyebrows as body language is when someone says something stupid and/or confusing and I raise one eyebrow above the other. This really amuses some people.

That is one of the many uses of expression by way of using the eyebrow which is different context on what you described.I am talking about both of the eyebrow being raised together at about one-sixth of a second while making eye-contact with another person without saying anything.Have you done this?

Thanks for the clarity. How about this question;have you noticed by observing others of raising the eyebrows in the manner i have previously said and knowing what it means?

When i do that people starts laughing, so im doing it all the time and people still find it amusing...I can only raise my left eyebrow.

I use my eyebrows in place of smiling, which is too much like effort. I raise them to greet people, to say hello, to indicate surprise, amusement, interest and disbelief.
In fact, it's amazing that people tell me I have such a mobile face, given that I seem to use only the one means of facial expression.

What bothers me is that when i use a particular expression of my eyebrows being raised at one-sixth of a second or as how FugitivSisyphus described is that if I don't question them on what they take it as being something otherwise not true, then my doubt is being raised of knowing what I do really have an effect that i want to convey.

Also useful for pointing things out subtly, I find.
