I had a quest where I needed to complete 7 libraries. There was also a bonus for having the Great Library. When I completed the libraries, the bonuses where:

+2 beakers to every library
random tech from ancient time period
(Great Library) get one free scientist in the great library city.

Why would I ever take the free scientist? It seems much better to take the +2 beakers from all libraries. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Free Scientist = GP bonus.

I'd nonetheless still take the beakers... but it does add something the other does not.

Hmm... That is a strange choice. I mean, the choice is basically between 3 free beakers a turn or 14 free beakers a turn (plus more for any future libraries). That's really something of a no-brainer- about thing that the Scientist has going for him is the GP bonus, and that's not really worth 11 beakers a turn.

The great scientist is more than just 3 beakers/turn. If you're running representation that's 6 beakers. If you apply bonuses from the library, university etc. that's even more. I mean the GL gives you 2 free great scientists and for some reason people consider that huge.
But I probably have to agree that +2 beakers/library is better.

The free scientist is a great option if your PHI/Pacifist. Especially if you put the national epic in that city, that scientist will produce a lot of GP points. Throw in wonders like sistine chapel, and fee specialist is pretty cool.

Its only +2 beaker for one library

Thats all I got when I picked that.

Yep, that's what I got as well. +2 beakers in my biggest city.

Though I haven't had this quest yet, I recieved a quest to build a number of stables and, when offered '+1 food to stables', the bonus was present in every city (which I checked). Wouldn't it be logical for the library bonues to be the same?

Probably, needless to say I was quite bummed with the reward. I was gunna build the libraries anyway, but it was still a feat getting all 7 built.

There is a lot of confusion (on my part) about when a bonus impacts just one unit/building/city or all unit/building/cities you own or all unit/bnuildings/cities you will EVER own.

For example, I got free navigation promotion from a Caraval/Harbor quest - and this was available on all of my current ships, and all new ships I built. What if it had just been for all of my current Caravals? Not bad, but not stellar. Wish I could know beforehand!!

Each time I've gotten this, I've had to build 11 libraries. A tall order if you're already teching good, and not trying to break the budget.

I suspect the # required to complete the quests is dependent upon map size, like some of the prerequisite buildings for the national wonders.

Generally I find the choice of rewards are pretty attractive and hard to choose from. I tend to prefer the best long-term choice--which is usually a bonus to all cities with the quest building--but the situation plays into it as well.

I got the free bonus to all my libraries, not just the biggest city. It may also have to do with the level I was playing at. I am pretty sure I was on Warlord or Noble.

This is a really poor reward for a quest. I had a random event where a rich family decides to donate books to my library and I could choose between a one-time bonus for the tech I am currently researching or to pay money and permanently get +1 :science: from the library in my capital...

Free Scientist = GP bonus.
Well, no. Settled Great Scientists do not provide a GP bonus, although running a Scientist specialist will orovide a GP bonus.

If your government is running Representation then the settled Great Scientist will provide 9 beakers and 1 hammer. That has to be balanced against the 14 beakers for the libraries... so it comes down to 1 hammer vs 5 beakers. I guess if your capital is lacking production, you would want to take the settled Great Scientist.

Of course, if all libraries (past and present) got the two beaker bonus then the scales would be heavily weighted towards that option. I wonder if the two beaker bonus only applies to the seven libraries of the quest or if it extends to others.

The free sci is like a 50% bonus to the Great Library's effect. You do not get a free Great Scientist.

I tested this over lunch (it so happens my current game is exactly at the point where I'm whipping out my last libraries). Only one library received the beaker bonus. (epic/monarch/large)

Thanks for the info - I'm trying to complete this quest in my current game (already got Great Library boo-ya!). Now I know to choose the specialist.

Oh, did you all have the GL when you completed the quest? What is the difference? (is it one of those "there is a chance something awesome will happen" and then it doesnt :) )
