Do you guys usually play with random events on or off?

How about the ALC and RPC games, on or off?

I personally keep them on, but they can be really frustrating, like on the turn you declare war, a volcano destroys your mines or some such crap.

I play with them on. They can be annoying as hell, especially the slave revolts and the building destroying ones. But they can also be game winningly amazing. Getting the 7 castles quest is a quick way to a diplo victory, with it's +3 diplo bonus reward. Or the ones that give your entire empire bonuses to health or happiness, turning you into a semi-charismatic/expansive leader.

I always have them on, I even increased the chance of an event occuring in the XML. They can be unbalancing (though what can be unbalancing in one game can be inconsequential in the next, like those free Shock or Cover promotions to ancient units), but I just enjoy them too much, and I play my games just for me after all.

On
Generally the effects aren't too major with the exception of the event that places a horde of barbarians on your doorstep when that occurs very early
The only thing I find annoying is that the events that ask you to build a number of units aren't scaled to the period they appear in. Building a dozen chariots or triremes is a bigger undertaking than building a dozen musketeers

I play with them on. I think they add spice.
They're generally small in and of themselves, but can sometimes be leveraged with work. I think it gives you something else to ponder in the middle of your game.

I played "on" since bts came out. But some recent games i turned them off, and i liked it.... Just too reperetive. A Slave Revolt in my capital is only funny so many time... At some point it becomes just boring/annoying.

I think a more even distribution of probabilities might help (read: now some events are very common (Slave Revolt, Forest Fire,...) while others are extremely Rare (Philosophers, IceSculptrues,...))... So instead of having differen events in every game, we end up with Slave Revolts and Forest fires every time...
Edit: At second look at my examples... Why are all the common events bad, while the rare ones are those that are (at least somewhat) nice

After my last post i started (and restarted) a couple of games, and those slave revolts were annoying me to no end as well.
I started getting that feeling that the computer was trying to hold me down. You know the one I'm talking about.
Just when i felt poised to enter a period of growth something like that would start up again.

I play with them on ( I dont know why ). I swear to god every single game I get the tsunami event where my forge is destroyed in my capital ( always very early in the game when its the most painfull )

Yea... Tsunami (Actually i think its a "Powerfull Hurricane") is one of those 'running jokes' that hit you every game. I wonder why they call it random

Refar, there is a tsunami event that has nothing to do with the hurricane one...
Event33 Tsunami

Prereq: THEOLOGY or LITERATURE or CODE_OF_LAWS or MACHINERY AND City is coastal

Obsolete: None

Active/Weight: 0/0

Result:

1.if city has less then 6 population it is destroyed

2.else city loses a number of buildings AND loses 5 population
As you can see, it is normally deactivated.... should be extremely fun to get a hit from this one

Man, this event is no joke, i do play with events and find them great but if i took a hit from that event after a code of law slingshot i whold not be happy.

I **think** i got hit with this once, i'm not 100% but i recall losing a big chunk of my population in a coast city, thats some brutal stuff

btw has anyone succeeded in finding the holy mountain?

Yes
Its location seems to be random
Once it was in my territory, once in my vassels (that was annoying) and once in the midst of ice on another continent in a location not even the most rabid REXing AI would consider establishing a city

I've always assumed the Slave Revolt event is so likely to nerf the still overpowered Slavery civic a bit. I'm fine with it.

Other than that, I think that most good events help more than the bad events hurt, and that often enough you just have to keep in mind that you should keep some money in your treasury to deal with bad events. Also, there's the perception factor - just like people end up remembering the situations where they lost a battle that they "should" have won due to high odds and think the RNG cheats them, they remember the bad events better than the good ones.

Intresting what happens if you find it?

I like the random events. I take the good with bad, but yeah I can understand the frustration.
