@Mylene

What EQ server do you play on? I haven't bought the expansion yet for any of my accounts, been busy, but plan to soon when I have time.

For the benefit of us mortals who don't play on Deity, can you explain why people use Curs rather than Rifle/Cannon?

The good thing with Rifle/Cannon is that it can deal with everything until Infantry without any problems. And if you have the land lead it can deal with everything until heavy air or tanks. It is solid but slow and since you never lose a unit you just steamroll everything with your avalanche.

The bad thing is that you need 2 different tech paths, that means you can not Lib the whole thing. And on deity it seems smart to just Lib yourself some military win. If you Lib Rifling you might as well go for Cavalry. Did that before and it works like on any other difficulty: build 20 units, rightclick, win.
If you Lib Steel you are stuck with a bunch of weakish units to support your stack until Rifling and you usually lack at least Replaceable Parts and Rifling. Since waiting is boring you then start the 1st war with Muskets/Pikes/Cannons. By the time you are done you have Rifling for the 2nd war and face rifles and/or a peace vassal nonsense.

The good thing about Cuirs is that they handle every counter pretty well. Besides formation pikes in big numbers perhaps. And Conquistadors can even deal with that.
If you plan your war right you can take a city every turn. You are in fact so fast that you can avoid the defenders stack and a peace vassal via the 10 turn peace treaty, which often is enough. Compared to Rifle/Cannon this approach often wins the game before the other one even starts. And if you get into trouble a.k.a. they get Rifling, you just go for Cavalry.

Yanner posted a game some time ago where he was around Lib. I played his save, took Rifling with Lib, teched Military Tradition, went Cavalry and it took me about 30 turns from there to go from about 20% land + 1 vassal to Domination. Do that with Cannons.

For everyone wondering how the land usually looks like after an early Conquistadors rush ;)

Yep, the sheer fact that all of the cities are still in revolt says everything about how fast Cuirassier wars can be.

Good write-up Mylene. After reading a comment from you about Conq's I went and had a very fun game with Izzy.

I had to trade for iron just to make them, but the 50 turns after that trade was made were absolutely zany. I first took down Holy Rome, then got backstabbed by Kublai Khan (my iron supplier). I then ran my stack up to vassal him. Then I brought my stack home to protect against Shaka's stack. When I managed at 10 turn treaty with him, I used the 10 turns to rush through Kublai's land to smash WvO's small 5 city empire, and then rushed back home to prepare for the final war vs. Shaka. Good times!

I absolutely love Izzy for her traits and UU. I'm sure the citadel is good, but haven't leveraged it well up to now. I definitely find openings more challenging with her, thanks to the starting techs.

Welcome back to this program, for a final update (i have to finish my own threads, after all...!)

Queen Isabella quickly realized, the time is right to take over the world.

"Milady, we crafted better Rifles for our Raiders. I think they call it Cavalry, in distant lands."
"What? ..... Iam proud of my elite troops, no upgrades needed!"
Her Majestys wish is my command, resulting in a game...how many Conquistadors can i whip?

Great.
Given this is Deity, and you are teching Gunpowder by 375 AD (a great feat, I'm stunned. I can't even achieve this on Noble on non-earth map, but I suppose the blazing tech rate of the AI helps) Toku may upgrade his swords to Samurais before declaring. He may even get Trebs. And Samurai + trebuchet can do quite some damage.
Looking forward to see how this continues.

Teching on Deity Pangaea maps occurs quickly because you have competent (aka "outrageously bonuses") trade partners unlike on Noble.

Also, just played a Emp game with Isabella where I peacefully expanded to 6 cities, turtled until MiliTrad/Gunpowder, then wrecked people. Playing with Conqs when you're ahead in tech basically feels like you're playing Tanks vs. Riflemen.

Isa is consider one of the best unrestricted leaders (ESP in MP from what I've read) so i think it is the fishing+myst starting techs + citadel that put people off :)
