Random Raves 40: Happy new year

I discovered jazz music recently and I love it.

Look at the soundtrack from "This is the Police". I liked the jazz songs quite a bit but am a complete newbie. I can't recommend anything else.

What have you listened to? The big four 1959 "albums that forever changed the face of jazz" is a good place to start. Those are:

Charles Mingus, "Ah Um"
Miles Davis, "Kind of Blue"
Dave Brubeck Quartet, "Time Out"
Ornette Coleman, "The Shape of Jazz to Come"

Art Blakey is another excellent musician to listen to if you're just getting into jazz, I'd recommend "Moanin'"

John Coltrane, "My Favorite Things" is good an accessible. If fusion is more your thing there's, Herbie Hancock, "Head Hunters". Anything by Duke Ellington and Django Reinhardt are worth a listen to as well.

Listen to the 100 years old lady, children: there is too much greed in da world...

I've really enjoyed songs from Kind of Blue and Time Out. Take five is my favorite thing right now.

I'm pretty sure I've heard Moanin' too but really I've just had the standard pandora Jazz station running without paying too much attention to it. I need to start reading the actual song titles and musicians.

I'm not a huge fan of the Sinatra stuff they play on there though.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I wanted to go to a Jazz club for New Years (we even made plans) but my back thing stopped that. :( We'll have to try again soon.

As of right now, we're go for launch on Monday. This will be our return to flight after the explosion in August.

This should be our first drone ship landing in the Pacific Ocean. Too bad it's on a work day or I'd drive up to Vandenburg to see it in person.

If I came to visit, could you take me around the facilities and show me cool space stuff? Or do you guys not do that
I'm sorry but I can't give you a tour due to ITAR restrictions which prevent foreign citizens from entering the facility. :-(

Check out the music thread.
I was hoping that you would have been swayed by NickBG and started listening to gaidarite nonstop, but at least you are improving your taste.

But this is the raves thread. Are you considering to change your account name to Gordon of Gecko?

You joke but the ISS wouldn't have been built without Canadarm1 & 2 so... Yeah you could be a spy

Is that the Canadian Legion?

My blog is going on hiatus for a while. Maybe permanently.

I've been submitting ideas for the Mars mission at work. Someone noticed and now they want me to work on them. I'll have to do it in my free time because it's not part of my job description. I actually want to move to Mars so I might as well start making contributions to make life better there now. It's a more productive use of my time anyways and I'm happy to do it.

In my hierarchy of free time CFC OT > my blog so I'm not leaving here or anything.

I look forward to seeing The Martian - Hobbs IRL Edition in IMAX 3D.

My Alerts alerted me to the fact that the forum software awarded me a trophy for being Seriously Likeable (in other words, having received 100 "likes.").

Thanks, all - that's a nice thing to cheer a person up. :)
