Rat16 - warmongers go immortal

I would suggest to go into all out war then, meaning DRAFT all cities to hill.
I hope you will not be figting modern armor or mex infantry with infantry, but agains useal tanks it should work resonably good.

Butttom line, you need to take on Cyrus at all cost, so drafting like there no tomorrow and supporting yourself with culture slider probably is the only hope.

Didn't have the energy to play this today. Hopefully tomorrow. I am taking my time since there is only 3 of us and the position is difficult.

Edit: BTW, drafting is probably a very good idea. It is a strategy I haven't yet tried. If any game could use it, this is probably it.

Preturn:

Looking over the game, the best use of the Great Artist is for a Golden Age. We haven't even had our first yet. This requires only one other Great Leader. I MM Paris to +60 great person points - that will give us a golden age in about 12 turns.
Since Paris is very vulnerable, we can obviously not declare war before then so my turn will be peaceful - I will attempt to build up our military. I am not going to switch to Nationhood yet.
York has 3 engineers which is a waste. This town can produce units quickly and will start to do so by rushing them since we still have slavery. We built the Globe Theatre there for that purpose. One more Great Leader in 30 turns is much less useful even if it is an Great Engineer.
I was looking to spread our religion around and was noticing we built no monastaries and now we can't. That stinks.
I MM a bit more for food especially if we are going to be drafting.
Also without too much work it is possible to eliminate unhappiness. We still have Hereditary rule. Simply move more units into the unhappy city.

Early: Greece is destroyed.
Mid: These turns are building up our armies. Very quiet.
Late: Memphis Revolts. I move enough units in so it won't happen again.

Notes:
I considered attacking Egypt while we waited, but they have Combustion that we can trade for Medicine when we get it.
We get Medicine in 4 and the AI still doesn't have it. I would trade it around if we can.
I think we really need Artillery to have a good chance. I would trade for medicine for physics and start researching Artillery.

We have an 85% chance of not getting a Great Artist which would give us a GA. I would use the GA for researching Artillery

Artillery and Infantry together can hopefully handle the Tanks and Gunships I have seen.
After getting Artillery I would run zero science and upgrade units (cannon and redcoats mostly).

After the GA we may want to consider the switch to Nationhood and also do some drafting

your plan sounds good to me...

I hope I can use the GP for a GA and get us to artillery. I suggest we stop researching then and simply pound the AI. It will be a tough war, but Till has shown he has the skills in the other game I played with him. He will tilt the war in our favor :D

got it...

I agree with the proposed strategy. And i also agree that this will be tough. Rat, could you send a couple of units through Cyrus' territory to scout where he keeps his forces? We won't be able to defend our entire border with him, so we either have to guess his targets or just defend our most important part of the border(the northern one) and let him into former Mongolia, if he so desires.

things all set up for massive military
move an infantry around and spotted the pretty evenly distributed military from Cyrus, welcome to the slugfest
on turn 3 got a GM which started our GA
this increased research and income a lot

on turn 4 we got medicine
got physics from Roosevelt for medicine +170gold
switched off research for 1 turn, fired all specialists in Paris (income +913gpt)
then Cyrus refused to trade artillery

was torn between self research and waiting for more cash, switched on research and a turn later Cyrus agreed to this

rat161860a.jpg

completely switched off research and started a massive upgrade (well, it's 245gold per artillery), a redcoat cost 155gold

on turn 7 I spotted trouble as Cyrus upgraded all his tanks to modern armor
this will be a true slaugther, at least we will go down in flames

I think Till, you should just declare and fight once the GA is over (in 3 turns), change to nationhood for proper drafting later on
do upgrade the defense before declaring war, though. Our units are evenly spread amongst the front, the main stack in the east though

I did not trade with Hatty, she still has combustion, we have physics and medicine (+artillery)
we might be able to pull her into the war, though I doubt that

welcome to the slugfest

play as slow as needed. this has to be played with extreme caution. I hope Cyrus is foolish enough to attack our cities by using artillery first. If he brings in his stacks, wear them down with plenty of artillery.
I think we need more of that, once the GA is over, don't hesitate for massive drafting/whipping.
remember, this is to be won via conquest and not domination, thus we can raze/pillage the land at will.

I would trade for combustion and get the oil connected. It might help as I believe it allows us to build better navy units. Navy won't be our main defense isssue, but it might be nice to be able to defend some resources and trading with Hatty won't cost anything. If we win vs Cyrus, then Hatty will be no trouble. If not we don't care what she does.

I don't think we can get an alliance. The AI are all pleased with each other.

yeee, agains modern armor one need 3 to 1 rate.
I suggest to sit tight at start and let him come to you. Problem is, he has figters and probably bombers in store.

LOL!!!!! We guys are, sorry to say this, toasted

good luck youll need it

p.s. make sure you upgrade all archers! hah

Early:

- Beg 30 gold from Hati.
- Scout Persia. Viel Feind, viel Ehr...
- There are Persian tanks in Egypt! That extends the border we have to
defend even further.
- Move units into defensive positions. Beshbalik and Turfan look like the most likely targets, due being so close to Persia.

War!:

Golden age expires, i declare on Cyrus. This is it, boys.
Neither Rosi nor Hati are interested in joining the frail. I give Hati Medicine for Combustion.

IT:
Hammer time!
Cyrus picks Beshbalik as his main target. Battle commences and my computer stops responding for 15minutes...

4:

Our losses:
~ 13 Infantrymen

Their losses:

Gunships: ~5
Modern Armor: ~1
Marine: ~1

The city holds and is now at + 15% defence bonus(Was at +60%). The main host of the Persian army has not yet enganged, but instead opted to loot the land:

invasion1cc7.jpg

The stack NW of Beshbalik is the biggest.

Karakorum nearly fell. It was defended by only one infantry, which yielded to gunships:
my.php

The doomed city.

We have ~30 Infantry left in the area. That makes it evident that we can't win at the current kill ratios. Two options present themselves:
a) Employ artillery. Since most of his modern armor is on one stack, a massive artillery assault would cause a lot of temporary damage.

b) Retreat. Old Sarai offers a solid +25% defence modifier, which no artillery can take away. It would mean surrendering both Beshbalik and Karakorum to the enemy. Once Old Sarai is doomed we could retreat again, fighting defence battle after defence battle, until Cyrus is out of gas.

After thinking about it for a while, i opt for option a). Cyrus has about 30 units on that stack near Beshbalik. Can't think of a better target for artillery. If we allow him to spread out into our lands, we'll have to handle small stacks, which can't be set under artillery fire efficiently.

The attack begins:

Cyrus' losses:
Artillery: ~ 3
Gunship: ~ 4
Modern Armor: ~ 15
Marine: ~ 5
-------- ~ 27

England's losses:
Infantry: ~ 4
Artillery: ~ 11
--------- ~ 15

Not the best RNG luck, especially concerning the Artillery. But hey! Cyrus' largest stack is history.
On the downside, we will lose Karakorum. Virtually every unit within distance was commanded to the Beshbalik battlefield.
Holding Karakorum would require 6 units, all of which would likely die. Just don't have those units to spare right now.

5:

Cyrus attacks Karakorum, Beshbalik and Turfan. Karakorum is defended by a whipped Infantry, Turfan by 2 Infantrymen. The rest is in Beshbalik.
Both Karakorum and Turfan fall. Every trooper, which looks halfway fresh gets recruited to take Turfan back. The troopers succeed.
Our whole western army is in need of a rest by now. Hardly an uninjured unit left. Fresh troopers from the eastern front are underway.

Cyrus' losses:
Artillery: ~ 5
Gunship: ~ 1
Infantry: 1
SAM Infantry: 2

England's losses:
Infantry: ~ 9
Machine Gun: ~ 2

6:

Cyrus attacked yet again. But he is out of artillery! We still lost plenty of infantry, though. ~5

7:

Cyrus resorts to gunships. Several cities are without defence due to gunships picking off the defenders.
Otherwise the war has calmed down. Only one attack on Beshbalik and no major stack in sight!

9:

Did i just sound a tad bit optimistic? Well, this turn disaster struck! Cyrus mounts massive attacks against Beshbalik and Turfan, almost completely wiping out our infantry! Also, Cyrus rampant tanks destroy a minor city up north. He also has mech inf by now. Turfan can be reinforced, but Beshbalik is likely doomed.

civilization42006121412ha3.jpg

I'm stopping here now and let the next player decide whether or not to give up Beshbalik. Cyrus has a habit of retreating his units after the attack, making it hard to counter-attack. He also likes to spread his units out now, so that artillery becomes all but useless. On the western front, we are short on everything. I took most of the units from the east as reinforcements, but there are still plenty of outdated units around, which should be upgraded as funds become available. Make sure to draft whenever possible.

Good luck!

 what a rough ride, but that was expected. I have a feeling this game will go down in flames and not in glory...

Greebley, you will need all the luck that is there...

that said, I would have doen exactly what you did, Till, attack with all artillery, that's why we built it...

you forgot to revolt to nationalism I think

Oh, we are in nationhood. Forgot to mention it. We'd be overrun without it by now, i think. Still, it is quite the uphill battle. Now that mech infs are starting to show up, (re)taking cities will be really painful...

well nothing you can do about the position really...
can you gift karakorum to egypt??
