Rat28 - AWE OBC - Iroquois

I played. Good news, no new enemies. Bad news, no one close, no horses. Here is my turn-log:
Spoiler :

Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over. Add a scientist to keep Salamanca from rioting.

Civilian units:
Workers 1

Military units:
Warriors 2
Archers 4

Press enter=>

IBT:

Turn 1, 2350 BC: Move Archer stack S to continue exploring.

IBT: Korean spear appears near Archer stack.
Salamanca worker=>Archer.

Turn 2, 2310 BC: Our treasury is at 7gold and -1gpt. I’m going to build wealth for 3 turns, then the archer.

IBT:

Turn 3, 2270 BC: Archer stack finds 2 Cows. Wrong hoofed animal.

IBT: Korean spear must be a wannabe pillager, heads toward Salamanca.

Turn 4, 2230 BC: Explores find Incense to the East, Wines to the South. This is a pretty map, just needs Horses.

IBT:

Turn 5, 2190 BC: Still no horses. Start Archer in Salamanca.

IBT:

Turn 6, 2150 BC: Meet 3 regular Korean warriors with Archer. I may lose him.

IBT: Our brave Archer beats all 3! 2hp, promotes to elite.
Salamanca Archer=>Wealth.

Turn 7, 2110 BC: Finally get that Korean Spear in a good kill-zone, Archer wins minus 1hp.
Western Explorer finds wheat but no horses.

IBT:

Turn 8, 2070 BC: Still no horses.

IBT:

Turn 9, 2030 BC: Western explorer finds light blue borders, but hopefully no official contact. Eastern Explorer meets a Korean veteran Archer. Ut-oh!
Rat-28NearMiss.jpg

IBT: Eastern Explorer is killed clean by Korean Archer,

Turn 10, 1990 BC: Begin moving Eastern Explorer 2 back home. Western Explorer also backs away from un-met light blue civ. That’s all for me this turn-set.

Civilian units:
Workers 2

Military units:
Warriors 2
Archers 4

Contacts: 2
Egypt
Korea

Build: Archer, 2 turns
Tech: Bronze Working, 2 turns

Here are a couple pictures:

Spoiler :
No Horses, but Incense.

No Horses, but Wines.
Rat-28West.jpg

Good luck to the next player. Maybe those luxes will attract victims, err settlers.

The save:

I have located horses, they are pretty far but not unreachable. We can have both wines and horses connected in eight turns. There is are four hostiles close by to the southeast and and Egyptian warrior the the southwest, near the horses. No new contacts during this turnset- phew!
Spoiler :
Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over. Push lux slider up to 10% to prevent rioting.

Civilian units:
Workers: 2

Military units:
Warriors: 2
Archers: 4

Bronze Working in 2

Turn 1: Archer finds horses! They are directly to the southwest, eight squares from Salamanca. That's pretty far but I think we can get them nonetheless. It helps that they are in line with the wine.

horses.jpg

IBT: zzz

Turn 2: Bronze Working -> HBR. Salamanca Archer -> Spearman. Archer that found horses stumbles on a fortified r. Egyptian warrior. Workers road -> mine

IBT: As I feared, Egyptian warrior kills the archer.

Turn 3: zzz

IBT: Korean V. Spearman appears near our elite archer. Is he a pillager? He poses no immediate threat.

Turn 4: Salamanca Spear -> Wealth. I send our elite archer south only for him to encounter a forted v. Korean archer and two Egyptian warriors. This looks grim...

IBT: Egyptians ignore our archer, but the Koreans kill him. Drat...

Turn 5: zzz

IBT: zzz.

Turn 6: Workers complete mine. For lack of better employment, I begin constructing a road towards the horses.

IBT: Salamanca grows to 6. Oops, meant to build a worker.

Turn 7: Archer spots reg. Egyptian warrior forted on the horses. I approach him from the hills. Salamanca Wealth -> Worker.

IBT: Egyptian warrior leaves the horses.

Turn 8: Worker -> Wealth. I didn't intend to pursue the Egyptian, but a finger slip puts my archer right next to him! Oh no!

IBT: Hard luck: the warrior kills a second archer!

Turn 9: Wealth -> Archer. I am building the road to the horses on the far bank of the river from the direction in which the Egyptians and Koreans are approaching; this will make it easier to defend.

IBT: The Korean spearman appears at the border. Egyptians are probably behind him.

Turn 10: The Korean is in a forest and across a river for a combined 100% defensive bonus, so I pull the border guard back. We can attack him as he approaches Salamanca. Archer -> Archer. I deploy a R. warrior to cover the workers, although they are in no immediate danger.

Civilian units:
Workers: 3

Military units:
Warriors: 2
Archers: 3
Spearmen: 1

Build: Archer, 2 turns
Tech: HBT, 19 turns

Here's the state of the world:
Spoiler :

empire1.jpg

empire2.jpg

If we play our cards right, we can have both horses and wines in eight turns- seven to road and one to plant colonies on the two pink x's. An archer or spearman will probably have to be dispatched to deal with that Egyptian regular warrior skulking around near the horses. Oh- and in the pictures, "E." means Egyptian, not elite.

And finally, the save:

good thing we found horses. I would build a few spears to protect the colonies. As colonies are auto-roaded, I would build a colony over the wine and then continu roading towards the horses. There is no point having horses before HBR anyway.

Hopefully, we can then start to take some cities. Please be careful with archers running around alone. Losses like these are unnecessary, I think.

Greebley, can you take this?

@Greebley: Partly timing and partly support concerns, yes.
@ThERat: I agree and apologize.

Preturn:
I think I want another Spear so I can cover our units when needed without using our only defender, so I switch.

Also beware of river crossings. They mess up mobility in the early game and mobility is very important for defense. If I build the road on the sqare the workers are on and then on the wines we have two river crossings Instead we can go the same distance and not cross the river at all.

IBT: Two Egyptian Regular warriors spotted blocking me from moving the workers cross the river. Possibly why the workers are located where they are?
Sumeria builds a new town S of us

1600 BC: Workers build a road where they are since they can't cross this turn due to Egyptian warriors.

IBT: A total of 5 Egyptian warriors in view now.

1575 BC: We have a Spear covering the square across the river so we can move our workers there despite Egyptian presence. We have a Spear and an reg Warrior to guard our workers.

IBT: First two Egyptian Warriors move next to us. Spear may be going after our Colony.

1550 BC: Kill 1 Warrior and promote our Archer to Elite. Vet Warrior heading to guard Colony.

1525 BC: Waiting for other warriors.

1500 BC: Kill a Warrior.

IBT: Spear steps on an improved squre. There are now 2 Korean Spear and 2 Archer will show up shortly.

1475 BC: Kill Spear with Elite Archer but it costs us an Archer. We cover the attacking Archer with a Spear so it isn't exposed.

IBT: Another Spear on our colony road. All 3 Egyptian Warrior attack and die giving us 2 Elite Spear.

1450 BC: Again lose an Archer to the Spear on the road. Elite Archer then kills Spear.

IBT: Attacking Korean Archer kills our Fortified Elite Spear with little trouble. Other one Fortifies.

1425 BC: Kill both Archers and all enemy troops are now gone.

1400 BC: Archer healing.

1375 BC: We nearly have our Horses. We build a Wine Colony and can lower lux to 10% again.

1350 BC: trying to complete a wall...

1325 BC: 2 Korean Archer and a Warrior.

1275 BC: Wall finished

IBT: 2 Archer and Warrior reteat back. Noone messes with The Wall (TM) They may be going around.

1250 BC: Next turn is tricky so I play one more.

1225 BC: Get HBR going to 0 gold to do so. Switch Prebuild to mounted warror

Notes:
Next turn we get our first Mounted Warrior.
No sign of Egypt after the Warriors died.
Korea has retreated just out of sight.
I was thinking of disbanding the Regular Warrior (guarding wines) and replacing it with a Spear.

Rat28_BC1225.jpg

played 9 turns to even things out...found out that the Koreans only approach us if we have a hole in our 'wall of defense' I opened it purposely as I think i's better to defeat their units gradually. I defeated 3 units without losses and go us to our wasteful GA. Our capital is now making 16sp for 2 turn MW's.

I would wait for maybe 5-6 of them and then go after Korea in the south to take some cities to give us higher unit support.

i got it

right now sumerian city seems more promising - already size 2 and would provide some protection for our colonies. we'll see how things look when we have a decent strike force.

must have done something wrong, i posted this hours ago...

Turn 0:
try to up lux, but our scientist helps us more
move toward agade

Turn 1:

IBT:
sumerians start HG

Turn 2:

Turn 3:
this is why therat suggested attack on the koreans, we still didn't have contact with the sumerians...
declare and capture agade

IBT:
masonry->math

Turn 4:
we need workers, but i don't want to waste the shields of our ga

Turn 5:
lose MW and archer against spear on plains (1-2)

Turn 6:

superspear forces mw to retreat

IBT:
cleo starts HG

Turn 7:
superspear withstands another MW
capture sumerian settler (they have already enough cities to grab) (2-2)

IBT:
cleo starts ToA
Thebes completes oracle

Turn 8:
kill koreans
capture kish (6-2)

Turn 9:
kill some more koreans (7-2)

IBT:
lisbon complete lighthouse

Turn 10:
spears on plains are again too much for our mws (7-3)
at least we win agains enkidus (8-3)

Notes:
we have a small force near kish, didn't want to risk flip
constantly losing mw against spears ruined my admittedly brave plan to attack on both fronts, but holding shouldn't be a problem.
settler moved NE of kish.
used lone worker for road toward hyangsan, intended slaves to road straight n to colony.

I would try and concentrate on Sumer for now instead of splitting forces. remember that the GA would be over soon, then we need to consolidate.

Anyway, great job getting us 2 more cities. :goodjob:

Lurker's Comment the game seems intresting, mind if i play my own version alongside you?

Got the save, I will play this tonight/tomorrow after I finish my Ku-1 turn-set. I still have 4 turns there and each one takes about an hour. If Cerenkov wants a swap, I'd be okay with that, if not I'll get it done soon.

Finished my turn-set, there's only good news. Read the turn-log here:

The save:

things look really good :goodjob: an army to boot :D

I am surprised Korea dared to squeeze a city in so close to us. All the better. Now, can we hope that the AI actually builds the GLib for us on our continent?

We should get some catapults up as well for support.
