The prerequisite to building a Cathedral is building 3 temples. Does anyone know how different map sizes, difficulty level, and game speed effects this 3 to 1 ratio?

Normal speed it is 3 to 1, that I do know.

Am I the only who doesn't ever build temples?

Raising my happy limit is too valuable to not build one in a non-capital city. If a religion spreads to a city, I usually build a temple since the happy limit is at 3 (or 4 in the capital) at the beginning of most games. Religion is +1 :), the temple is another :) That raises the max working city size one more pop.

you probably are. they are expensive early game, but chop a forest to get them. or turn on emphasize production for a few turns. they are very good. :D

and that couple of extra turns can prevent a city later on from starving because they are so unhappy

You need them for cultural wins.

I usually run monarchy in the early game so no need for me to build them, instead I just build more military units.

military cost you upkeep
temples don't

you need to be under HR for the troop happiness
you have temple happiness in every combination of civics

temple give you culture
troops give you power

it's a tradeoff, as usual

I suppose that I am one of the few players who only use Hereditary Rule due to the fact that it is all that there is. I usually have about +2 or 1 :) in my cities, and then one city has +28. Do naval units count, by the way?

I don't quite understand what you mean by this.
I often run HR with only one or 2 units in each city, and abuse the whip through it.
But I still build the temples, which are more reliable than the pacifying troops...

AFAIK naval units, air force and non combat (scout/explorers) units don't count
