RB12 - Roadkill

Well, it's a coin toss, isn't it?

On one hand, we could probably tech our way to space. On another, we could gather an army, and go beat someone up.

Possible candidates:

Cyrus - well, he's number one in score, but he's not the tech king, and he's quite far away. I was hoping that we could sic Kublai on him, and let them duke it out.

Alex - potential victim. Despite his GA and me selling him Gunpowder (I could not resist the temptation of 260 G :)), he's trailing in score. On the other hand, it feels like stealing candy from a baby.

Lizzy - well now. She's the tech queen, has a city in the middle of our lands, attacked us previously, and defends her cities with longbows. I'm all for taking her down a notch - once we have Infantry, perhaps? We could take a city or two, sue for peace and get some techs out of her.

BTW, you only played 5 turns (1820-1830), so if you want to play 15 to 1880, feel free to do so.

I like the idea of going after Lizzy. I'll see what I can do building up the military. Sicking Kublai on Cyrus sounds like a great idea too. I will see if I can broker a deal with him.

I knew something was wrong. Those turns want by tremendously fast.
I didn't know turns were still going by 2 years, thought it was one now. I'll play fifteen turns.

(0) Look around at current diplomatic arrangements. There are three blocks that have been formed. Cyrus (point leader) is in a block with Lizzy (tech leader). Alex (pitiful) is in a block with Tokugawa (even more pitiful). And lastly, we (the glorius spanish) are in a block with Kublai and Peter.

(4) 1858 - Kublai asks us to cancel deals with England and I graciously agree. I did find a bug this turn too. When upgrading a loaded galley to a frigate the units in the galley will remain in the frigate...

Built the academy in Cordoba with the Great scientist.

(5) 1860 - Buddhism is spread by a missionary to Osaka to help speed along the Statue of Liberty build via Organized religion. The great engineer also arrives this turn and hurries the statue of liberty, cutting 15 turns off the construction time.

(6) 1862

(7) 1864 - Kublai is being bossy. He asks us for democracy and I agree. Relations with him are excellent. I ask him to re-sign a defensive pak which was redded out before and he agrees.

Rifling is discovered and Military Tradition is started.

(8) 1866 - I traded rifling to Pete for Scientific Method, WM, and 50 gold. I also sold him spices for 7gpt.

(10) 1870 - Our defensive pak suddenly cancels with Kublai and we later find out that he has declared war on Lizzy. :)

Revolt to emancipation.

(11) 1872 - Accept Kublai's offer of marble for spices.
Military Tradition is discovered and research on steel is started.

Overview: Kublai was able to capture an English city.

Steel and the Statue of Liberty are both due in 1 turn. I upgraded a lot of our navy and built a lot of galleons/frigates. Land units have just been started about five turns ago. I suggest turning research off after steel to upgrade our army next to Kagoshima and any defensive units that we may need to. We should be able to launch a war in 20-30 turns, production in some cities is truly lacking. Also, a switch to theocracy is reccomended since the SOL will be done in 1.

Save:

Most excellent set of turns, I must say.

Kublai declaring on Lizzy is double-plus good.

Will grab the save once I get home in the evening.

Every democracy carries the seeds of its own destruction.

The golden century of Spain was coming to an end. Having discovered Steel, the Spanish scientists set before themselves a task of conquering steam power. The Statue Of Liberty – a monument to their glory – has been built in Osaka, nowadays often called “the second capital”.

In the general elections of the year 1882, riding the platform of Spanish superiority to other nations, the Theocratic Party came to the fore.

Four years later they declared war on England. Declaring a state of emergency, they canceled the general elections that year, and remained in power until the dawn of new century.

True, it was their Mongolian allies who suggested such a war, but what did the poor citizens of Canterbury care? Their homes were bombarded by the enemy frigates, their efforts at arming all their soldiers with rifles were all but naught – the city finally fell in the year 1900 with a loss of only two cavalries (one elite, unfortunately).

When the Theocrats learnt of their losses, they shrugged, for they did not care. They knew that the age of the horse was finally coming to an end. Their visionaries foresaw a future where war would cease to be a personal affair, and would be conducted from within great beasts of metal and smoke.

The citizens of Warwick awaited a similar fate but the cruel Spanish were content to wait, leisurely bombarding their shores.

The common folk of Spain did not protest, for the crafty Theocrats ensured that a full 10% of the national income should go towards the Ministry Of Culture, whose charge was to build patriotism and spread propaganda.

He, who controls the youth, controls the nation.

In their secret laboratories, the Spanish scientists worked to create a standard for Assembly Line. Once this was done, the military would begin conversion to proper Infantry, while the people would see factory smoke rise in the sky above the Spanish isles.

No age of peace this was.

There is a choice now, for after taking Canterbury, the Prime Minister For Life has been found dead, poisoned by his council. Perhaps a more moderate voice will speak now, and suggest peace. Perhaps not. But either way, the Statue Of Liberty and the ideals it represented are tarnished by the actions of the nation.

Such is the fate of all ideals.

Screenshots (in order) –

1. Statue in Osaka (did you know its benefits apply only to one continent?)
2. Sometimes War! (well, after ten years of bombardment!)
3. Death Of A Hero (he had 80%+ chance to win!)
4. State Of Affairs (nice empire we’ve got)

A very brief summary on what happened:

Captured Warwick only losing 2 suicide cannons and a rifle (against the odds). Research is on Biology. Pete declared war on England.

War weariness was really bad so I signed peace. There was no way we would be able to take london anyways. They have infantry too. Short term plan I would say is to upgrade our army to infantry and build lots and lots and lots of cannons. Then suicide them against the walls of London and take the city.

Again sorry for such a breif report. I'm going to open a spot in the roster for those lurkers out there because I don't know about you Maksim, but I don't have time to play this SG once a day and my other ones.

Roster:
xenikos - skip until he checks in
Maksim - up
open
Knupp - just played (and on deck unless somebody joins)

Same thing here, as a matter of fact. I've got an exam on Wednesday, and won't be able to play until then.

If in the meantime, xenikos comes back, or any lurkers want to join, just grab the save, post a "got it" and play!

lurker's comment: Have you posted this opening in the Civ 4 Sucession Game Registration Thread?

LKendter, thanks for the suggestion. This is now done.

Once again, if anyone want to join in, and can play now, just post a "got it".

I'm interested in joining in, but don't see Knupp's save there. I'll check back tonight when I get home from work.

Okay, thanks rddc05.

roster:
xenikos - on extended skip
rddc05 - up
maksim - on deck
Knupp - just played

Here's the save. Sorry I didn't post it before.

knupp...still need more players??

Sure pholk. We started off with five players anyways so I don't think it will be an issue to add you into the roster.

Final Roster (now closed):
xenikos - on extended skip
maksim
Knupp - just played
rddc05 - up
pholkhero - on deck

alrightey...i'll read up tomorrow whilst i'm here at work

Hmm, tried to open the game but it says the file is protected to ensure that the assets in my mods folder have not been changed. I haven't added any mods except the autolog and there are no files in my mods folder. Any suggestions?

Go ahead and take the turn if you can open the file, pholkhero.

This is a known bug with Civ. If your hard drive uses the fat32 format method, then Civ can't process a protected game. This is why any protection method is bad at this time.
