RB9 - Cottage Cheese

It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to play this before the weekend. Therefore, I'm going to have to request a skip this time around. My apologies for delaying the game this long.

I spent quite a long time looking round our Empire, significantly modernised in the centuries since I last saw it, but I didn't make any significant changes. Took a citizen in Sparta off the Farm he was working, even though someone else built it, that sort of thing. Nothing major.

Boy, you really weren't kidding about our military, huh? Were we Spiritual, I'd be sorely tempted to get a round of drafting done, and never mind how long the growth takes. I'll try very hard to get some Rifles built when there's time.

Turn 1 (1630): Corporation comes in. I'd quite like the Great Scientist available at Physics, since we can't afford to run specialists to get our own Great People. The major downside is that it would require Astronomy, obsoleting the Colossus after only 20 turns or so. However, it also requires Chemistry, and so I can get that and Scientific Method before we have to make that decision. A couple of the AIs also have Chemistry, so picking that will also let me see whether they have any beyond that, and thus whether it's a fool's hope to get the Scientist. Chemistry is of course also on the path to Assembly Line as suggested by Kylearan, so I'll work out the details in another 3 turns (I love our research rate)

Chengdu grows out to an unhappiness, but since half its villages are becoming towns over my round, the Aqueduct will build quickly and I can get it to a happiness building.

Turn 2 (1635):

Gandhi comes calling offering Chemistry for Democracy. Not interested, thanks, since we're halfway there ourselves now. Also he's the most advanced AI, and not nearly as much our friend as he was back when he was Confucian (when did he change to Taoism, anyway? I must have missed that one.)

Turn 3 (1640):

Rush Statue of Liberty with Cai Lun.

Our Curious Cat got slaughtered by a Camel Archer, despite being in a stack with the best part of a dozen of Qin's units.

Turn 4 (1645):

Chemistry comes in. I check that noone has Scientific Method: they don't, and so I decide to push for Physics, rather than going straight for Assembly Line. Nice as factories will be, even in this game they can wait. An Academy in Washington would be... nice.

For the free specialist, each and every city gets an engineer. Production is far our greatest worry!

Sparta's borders push Calcutta back a step. We've got some unexpected breathing space!

Turns 5-7: Nada, really.

Turn 8 (1665):

Oxford University started in Washington. The last two forests there will be chopped to speed it, it's worth over a hundred beakers a turn!

Turn 9 (1670): Astronomy started, for Physics. Gandhi has Scientific Method now, so I don't think any more delay is affordable. The Colossus isn't worth all that much to us. Astronomy won't finish during my turn, though, so the next play can change the plan if everybody disagrees with me.

Scientific Method shows us that we have two Oil, both at Philadelphia. One is on land, one in the sea.

Turn 10 (1675):

Two things here. First, New York has built its first Rifleman. I've set it to a 1-turn Temple to wipe out the new unhappiness, but I recommend it goes right back to military after that.

Also in that shot, Qin has taken an Arabian city. I'm thought it was the first, but buying his map for 20 gold shows that Bismarck managed to get to Medina before he did, and that's fallen too. Unless they sign peace soon, Saladin may well be dead. From our side the war has been a complete nonentity, of course, since Saladin's been on the defensive. And that's as it should be.

At handoff, about half the cities are building Riflemen. All the ones that didn't have a pressing health/happiness need, I set to Rifles, though most were slowed by the need to build Barracks first. The Rifles are coming along, though. One day, we might actually have a military!

Washington is not, of course. Oxford University is 6 turns from completion, with all the forests chopped. It'll increase our science rate by about a sixth, on its own! Not that we *need* it, or anything... Our star is rising:

I'm done. Bede is Up.

--Garath

Got it and keep the star rising.

Turn 245 (1675 AD)
Not to beat a dead horse or anything but take a gander at that graph.

'Merrican power is only now getting to a par with Alexander the Heavy Bag! And Saladin the Speed Bag. Seriously, though, folks. Bismarck's efforts on behalf of his friend Qin are clearly collecting their tolls. But Gandhi just keeps going from strength to strength! Just hope he doesn't catch a cold and determine that Atlantic City (those sandy beaches north of Washington) is the place to remedy it. So did I build any rifles, well, a couple-three maybe..

New York finishes: Buddhist Temple
Chengdu finishes: Theatre

Turn 246 (1680 AD)

Gandhi sneezes and gets what he pleases. Go buy yourself a mink hat and coat!

Then Bismarck makes peace with Saladin

Looking for a way to get it all back. Gandhi presents an opportunity that should be not be passed by. Social Democratic civics in exchange for his peaceful conversion to our State Religion and all the cash just paid him plus some.

Next step is whip out some Confucian missionaries to convert his border cities and cement that reduction in tensions. He has improved his attitude. Can you tell I am running scared of Four-Eyes in a Bedsheet? Caspar the Ghoul is how I think of him.

The deal with Gandhi was so successful I try the same thing with Bismarck and he allows as how he will add a Free Markets economy, convert and share some cash. The Northern Religions Free Trade Zone is now in operation!

And the same goes for Qin who pays us 320g and accepts a Free market economy in exchange for Liberalism. And we now enjoy the benefits of the West Asian Co-prosperity Zone. Now let Toku get a wind up his sails, or his knickers in a knot.

Turn 247 (1685 AD)
Tech learned: Astronomy

Turn 248 (1690 AD)
Research begun: Physics
Atlanta finishes: Rifleman

Turn 249 (1695 AD)
New York finishes: Rifleman
Boston finishes: Rifleman
Philadelphia finishes: Confucian Missionary
Chengdu finishes: Confucian Missionary

The two missionaries head off into India but fail in their mission, so I start some rifles

And Toku beats us to Physics then starts a Golden Age.

Turn 250 (1700 AD)
Washington finishes: Oxford University

Turn 251 (1705 AD)
Toku is heading for a break-out I think. His power curve took a big jump 150 years ago but he is the smallest amongst us.

With Saladin on the skids I smell a Sino-Japanese War in the future.
especially since Toku has started a Golden Age.

Washington with Oxford

Sparta finishes: Courthouse

Turn 252 (1710 AD)
Turn 253 (1715 AD)
We learn Physics
Washington finishes: Rifleman

Turn 254 (1720 AD)
Research begun: Steam Power
Philadelphia finishes: Rifleman

Turn 255 (1725 AD)
:coffee:
Making our run at factories, now. Toku is on a technology plateau with us and has gobbets of cash to go with it. I'm dithering now, as I keep swapping between health/happiness projects and troop training. The cultural budget is pushed back up to keep everybody working. I kept hovering over the Free Religion civic but didn't push the button as we need another religion, at least, in Washington before doing that. Population points of 15 are about the happiness limit we can afford right now without spending heavily on song and dance.

The Northern bloc is peaceful with Toku, Saladin and Alexander looking in from the outside.

Newly trained troops have been sent to Philadelphia as Gandhi has something of a troop build up there.

Tokugawa looks like a potential tech threat, hmm. We may need to have our allies rough him up down the road. Be careful about swapping to Free Religion, as we'll lose all of our (huge) diplomatic boosts with our Confucian friends if we do that. And the Organized Religion shield boost is still worth noting! :)

Turn 255 (1725 AD)
Methos: After looking at the relations bonuses we are getting from our religion I'd have to agree that keeping our state religion is in our best interest.
Methos: We have an extra Ivory so I go see Bismarck and ask what he's willing to give for it.

Methos: I find it interesting that our population and land are within .04% of each other.
Atlanta finishes: Rifleman

Turn 256 (1730 AD)
Atlanta begins: Grocer
Methos: Since we gain the full +4 bonus a grocer is a no-brainer.

Turn 257 (1735 AD)
Methos: That's not good. Bismarck just swapped civics, and went with Free Religion. We went from friendly (+12) to pleased (+8).

Methos: The workers just finished bulldozing a town and replacing it with a mine. Man I bet that was a hard decision!
Tech learned: Steam Power
Washington finishes: Rifleman
New York finishes: Grocer
Boston finishes: Grocer
Philadelphia finishes: Christian Missionary
Sparta grows: 8

Turn 258 (1740 AD)
Washington begins: Courthouse
Philadelphia begins: Courthouse
Methos: Woohoo! We have two sources of coal in our territory. One near NY and the other north of Boston.
Christianity has spread: Washington
Methos: I start a couple courthouses to save some gpt. With our traits they're very cheap. WDC will finish in two and Philly in four.
Chengdu grows: 16
Sparta's borders expand

Turn 259 (1745 AD)

Methos: Saladin comes begging for peace. I decline as I don't wish to lose the +4 bonus we are getting from Qin due to our war. I suggest waiting until Qin is finished before sueing for peace.
Washington finishes: Courthouse
New York finishes: Rifleman
Boston grows: 15
Philadelphia grows: 11

Turn 260 (1750 AD)
Washington begins: Observatory
New York begins: Rifleman
Methos: Since WDC and Philly are building infrastructure I keep NY on military. We're currently 5th in soldiers and I'd hate to get worse.
Methos: WDC is currently at 300 bpt so I start work on an observatory. Might as well keep a good thing going.
Washington's borders expand
New York grows: 18
Boston finishes: Rifleman

Turn 261 (1755 AD)
Boston begins: Courthouse
Philadelphia finishes: Courthouse
Atlanta finishes: Grocer
Chengdu finishes: Grocer

Turn 262 (1760 AD)
Philadelphia begins: Observatory
Atlanta begins: Observatory
Chengdu finishes: Christian Temple

Turn 263 (1765 AD)
Tech learned: Military Tradition

Methos: Toku comes along with a deal I just can't turn down. The amount of cash he's willing to give will keep us at 100% for a long time.
Washington finishes: Observatory
New York finishes: Rifleman
Boston finishes: Courthouse
Chengdu finishes: Confucian Missionary

Turn 264 (1770 AD)
Washington begins: Cavalry
New York begins: Observatory
Boston begins: Observatory
Chengdu begins: Observatory
Methos: Qin has made peace with Saladin, so I go see if he's willing to deal.
Methos: Unfortunately Saladin wasn't willing to give up anything, but we are now at peace with him.
Methos: We're still on friendly terms with Qin, but our relations have dropped from +15 to +12.
Tech learned: Assembly Line
Blaise Pascal (Great Engineer) born in New York

Turn 265 (1775 AD)
Research begun: Electricity
Methos: Qin comes calling and wants to sign a Defensive Pact. I decide to turn it down. I'm not really sure if it would be wise for us to sign one with anyone, at least not yet.
Methos: Greek culture overtakes Sparta and we lose a lot of tiles. Including a winery.
Methos: A great engineer was just born in NY and he has not been moved. Up to the next player and team to figure out what to do with him.
Methos: Losing the winery has cost NY to gain an angry citizen.
Methos: BTW, Sparta is now starving.

Not to but here’s our current power graph:

BTW, this turn we just started Electricity, so there are no beakers invested in case we prefer to switch to a different tech. I went Electricity as I thought we were heading towards Industrialization.

(0) 1775AD The first thing I do is check our tech situation. We're doing extremely well, probably the tech leader. Tokugawa and Gandhi are the only two civs close to us; feel free to trade with Gandhi, as he's still a bit behind, but DON'T give anything to Tokugawa if possible. He is not our friend and he's our largest tech rival. Yeah, really. :)

Diplomatically, we're still holding strong with our friends. Now that Bismarck and Gandhi have both gone to Free Religion, however, I think we should do the same. We will lose a bonus with Qin - but we're running 20% luxuries right now from lack of happiness, so we can REALLY use the happiness boost from Free Religion. I go ahead and make the swap.

I approve the Electricity push. Why? Well, we don't need Biology because we have no farms, we don't need Railroad just yet because we don't have mines or lumbermills, and we badly need more happiness, so we may as well head for the music/movies/drama wonders! The one :smoke: move is NOT having all our cities on factories. What happened? Production is our one Achilles heel, so let's improve that ASAP! Factories dialed up EVERYWHERE. If I do nothing but build factories on my turn, I'll be a happy man.

(1) 1780AD Yep, just about every factory will take 10-15 turns to complete. We'll be doing nothing but building them my whole turn. That's OK though. Take a look:

(2) 1785AD Gandhi pops up proposing a trade. He wants to give us Steel for Democracy and 1500 of our gold. I rework it, send him Physics for Steel and get some of his gold in the deal. Not all that critical of a tech sent by either side...

(5) 1800AD These are the quietest turns I've played in a succession game in ages. Very odd event happens this turn, however: Tokugawa asks to renegotiate our clams deal. We were sending him stone for his clams. However, he cancels the deal, I ask him "what can we do to renegotiate", and he suggests giving us clams outright. I click "OK", and we get clams for free! :crazyeye: I have no clue what happened there, but now we're getting a resource for free. And from Tokugawa of all people!

(7) 1804AD Electricity -> Radio. Our target wonder is the Eiffel Tower, which I expect we can build in Washington rather easily. We should swap our coal TEMPORARILY for iron while building it. I am going to use our Great Engineer to rush Broadway, we should be able to build the other wonders by hand (since we'll get to Rock N Roll first, and we'll have factories in place by then to build it).

(8) 1806AD Broadway in Washington, courtesy our our Great Engineer. :D Washington back onto factory, New York is finally happy now. Once we land Eiffel and Rock N Roll, we may finally get our happiness crunch solved!

(9) 1808AD The one plus from running this 20% luxury rate (and being in Free Speech) is that we are ROCKING the culture. And once we get Eiffel Tower and have broadcast towers everywhere, that will only change even more. In fact, we've gotten the Indian incense tile near Bangalore down to 52% Indian, and it will probably revert to our control relatively soon. Nanjing is under serious cultural pressure too. After it finishes its factory/coal plant, HERMITAGE in Atlanta! And then - build a Confucian and Christian cathedral there! We're gonna finish the job we missed out on earlier and flip Nanjing! :hammer:

(10) 1810AD Factories complete in Washington and New York, I start them both in on coal plants. That's going to drive them into extreme unheathiness, so we need to go for either Refrigeration (supermarkets) or Medicine (via Biology) next. We may even want to go into Environmentalism civic once we get it! We certainly could use the health. We can PROBABLY just make due with supermarkets and skip the non-required Medicine tech, but it's up to you.

Hopefully we'll be able to reduce the luxury slider once we get the next two happiness wonders done. We could get away with 10% now, but I've leaving it at 20% because we're close to stealing a vital incense resource from India. Sparta will also eventually wrestle its wines back from Greece, but that's taking a bit longer. Hold down the fort, we're doing well.

We're close to stealing this tile. Probably only another 10-15 turns before Philadelphia's culture overtakes it.

Sparta is slowly regaining control of this tile. Unfortunately, it's starving and there's nothing we can do about it at the moment. Oh well...

One last thing: for the love of god, DON'T research Industrialism yet. It will obsolete our ivory! We'll have to go there eventually, but let's settle our happiness situation first and then come back to it. :)

Lurker's Comment: When Statue of Liberty was built, why was it more important to add the engineer in Sparta than an artist? I was wondering if an artist might have helped or prevented the starving situation...

Turn 0 - 1810AD: Since we have recently built the Broadway, we have four extra musicals that are just burning a hole in our pocket. We have 1336 gold in the bank, but we are spending at -44gpt. Qin and Toku will each give us 10gpt for a musical, while Gandhi only has 7gpt to give. Nobody else has enough cash to bother selling to at the moment. We are down to -17gpt after those 3 trades and still have an extra musical for future trading.

We could really use some more health resources, but nobody has any to trade. New York is already on its way to losing one pop point; and probably will eventually lose 2 pop points after that Coal Plant is constructed.

It would also be nice to have some iron in 4 turns when we start building the Eiffel Tower. While Qin and Gandhi both have a spare source, the price is rather steep: coal plus 144gpt. The good news is we may be able to steal Gandhi's spare iron. Boston is putting cultural pressure on Bangalore and the iron tile is 50% ours already.

IBT: Tokugawa comes looking for a free handout. After declining, he is still pleased with us.

Meanwhile, Gandhi starts a golden age.

Turn 1 - 1812AD: We have iron! And Gandhi is even guarding it for us!

Turn 2 - 1814AD:

Turn 3 - 1816AD:

Turn 4 - 1818AD: Radio is learned. I start us on Biology next, since it is required for both Refrigeration and Medicine.

Washington completes its Coal Plant and starts on the Eiffel Tower. DC is starving now that the Coal Plant is built.

Meanwhile, Sparta has drained its food storage bin and has lost a pop point. It is still starving and will lose another population next turn.

Turn 5 - 1820AD: Sparta is done starving at a population of 6.

IBT: Qin comes calling for a free handout. I give him the Democracy tech that he wants ...

Turn 6 - 1822AD: New York completes its Observatory and starts on Rock-N-Roll.

Turn 7 - 1824AD:

Turn 8 - 1826AD: Biology comes in and I start us on Medicine. Unfortunately, Supermarkets will not solve our health problems. DC and NY are both at -5 health and the Supermarket will only give +2 for our resources. Environmentalism will give us +6 health at the expense of a trade route in each city. A Supermarket AND a Hospital would let us keep the trade routes. Note that not every city would need both.

Turn 9 - 1828AD: Boston completes an Observatory and begins an Infantry. Atlanta completes an Observatory and begins the Hermitage. These shave a turn off of the Medicine research.

IBT: Now Alexander has his hand out looking for a free lunch. Even though he has been building troops lately, we still have a larger force than he does. And hopefully, we will be able to start building troops once these factories and power plants are complete.

Turn 10 - 1830AD:

An uneventful set of turns. The Eiffel Tower will be done in 10 turns, Rock and Roll in 11 turns, and environmentalism will be available in 3 turns. Philly and Sparta are the only cities that have not completed their factory/power plant builds.

I inherit the game on 80% science, 20% culture, losing 15gpt. My first order of business is to establish that the second 10% of culture is only keeping 2 people at NY and one at Chengdu happy, and they're in the process of starving anyway. Research set back to 90%

Turn 1 (1832): First Infantry built in Boston. More dialled up. After the next one, though, it may well be a good location for the IronWorks.

Turn 2 (1834): Pytheas (Great Merchant) born in Washington. Since we already have well over a thousand gold, I save him for a future Golden Age.

Turn 3 (1836): Medicine in. I select Mass Media and revolt immediately to Environmentalism. I don't want to have to spend the time on researching Refrigeration just yet, and the wonders at Mass Media would be nice. I doubt we can actually win via the UN since Gandhi will be our opponent, but we can get other things out of it.

I don't think losing the trade route per city is significant, particularly once the cities grow and have more specialists since we actually have enough health at least. There weren't enough cities for Free Market to be huge, really.

Lastly, QinShi declares war on Alex again. I send still a couple more Rifles down to Sparta, in case we get asked to join in again. We have cash for Infantry upgrades as necessary, too.

Turn 5 (1840): IronWorks begun in Boston (due in 13).
Atlanta finishes Hermitage, starts us some more Infantry. Our power is still pitifully weak by comparison to the big three, who are shooting upwards

It's a good thing none of them seem to want to kill us, really.

Gandhi completes the Kremlin, also. Pity he isn't in any Civics that let him rush anything, really.

Turn 6 (1842): Toku calls to cancel the deal in which he gives us Clams for free. However, when I ask him to renegotiate, his offer is... Clams for free!
 :D

Gandhi has Oil to trade, showing that he has Combustion, as well as the Artillery and Railroad that we can see. We really need to start a push for Space after Mass Media, or we might not get there before him (or Toku)!
We only have Medicine up on Gandhi, but are quite a significant few techs up on Toku, as it happens. Unfortunately he won't trade with us ("We don't want to start trading this technology away just yet") so we'll have to research our own Artillery.

Turn 7 (1844): China captures Thermopylae. Alex is down to three cities, expect him to die. China hasn't made a move on the cities to our South, so consider Jackal Corps-ing them when he does (or even before!), once our Rifles and Infantry arrive in Sparta.

Turn 8 (1846): Mass Media comes in. Washington and Boston are the places to build Hollywood and the UN, despite that Washington is still 2 off the Eiffel Tower and Boston is still 10 off IronWorks! It'll actually have decent production once that finishes!

Turn 10 (1850):

Washington starts UN, due in 18.

China sneakily capture the southernmost Greek city, despite that I haven't seen any troops going that way.

And that's it. Pretty uneventful turnset, really.
