RBCiv Conquests SG Discussion Thread

I'm afraid I must pass - my PC quite simply isn't up to the job. I one tried out Cordova on demigod (and got duly hammered by the Franks, who were monsters) and the interturns took so long I just gave up.

I'm going to enjoy watching from the sidelines though :).

Monarch Burgundy would be nice for me - tough (is it really?), but with a somewhat slower tech pace than my last games. BUT...

I'm not sure my computer can handle this scenario. I know Hotrod had to bow out of this scenario because of this, and Jack mentioned something along these lines as well. I have an Athlon 500Mhz, 256MB RAM, running XP (unfortunately). Hotrod or Jack, if you happen to read this - what machines are you using, as a comparison?

Or put me in any game with a big roster where it won't hurt too much if I have to bow out, or skip me for this game and I'll be lurking.

I have a lowly 350mhz PII with 128ram, and I played through this scenario twice. However, I am quite accustomed to long interturns, so I usually have a book in front of my monitor ;)

I guess it really depends upon how much you can tolerate waiting

I have a PIII-450mhz with 128mb RAM, and I did in fact buy a book to get through the interturns too when I had a go at the scenario :crazyeye:.

Ouch, I am in 2 of the most challenging ones (I did ask for it anyway :-) ).

If someone really wants to play the Russian game, feel free to swap me to an another game (but not a too easy one).

Jabah

PS I will check that my computer is able to handle this scenario, but since it is slightly better than those listed before (500Mhz/256ram/W98) and did manage Sirian huge game (even if it was a pain at some point) it shoud be ok.

Who says computer games lead to a decrease in book sales?

Thanks for the input; I think I'll give this scenario (and an additional good book, perhaps about the middle ages :p ) a try. Either the monarch Burgundy game, trusting Charis on his "tough" assessment, or a more challenging one if a team needs more players.

I like the settings, I waited to start Deity Danes as a sologame since several weeks...and I like the idea of open SGs, since I think some of games (especially ours ;) ) will end pretty soon (note I wrote 'end', not 'won').

Sid Byzantium  ? The only time I tried them on DG, I was overrun by the Abbasids before I even had Cataphracts...this will be :cough: interesting.

Few comments:
@akots: What's wrong with the Rus city names? I only found and read one book ever about their history (the Rus, not the Russians), but all names I can remember fit well.
Next, to have any chance here, you really should fire up the editor and hava look where the Kings are...

@T_Mc: Norway is Dark Blue in the game; if you load the Scenario in the editor, for any reason Norway is displayed in Burgundy instead of Byzantium, but in the game Norway=Dark Blue (Germans=Blue), and Byz=Burgundy (and Burgundy=Yellow :crazyeye: )

@Doc - I just loaded the Scenario, and Norway is Dark Red. Maybe has to do with which civ the player selects, or might be a difference between language versions.

Or maybe I'm just that colorblind. :p

Any more room in the Abbasid/Turk games? I'd like to get in a 2nd game, and an Arab civ would be a nice complement to the :viking: game.

Boy, Charis...you know how to lure a guy...both my top two choices, both with great teammates, both ones that people have laughed at the possibility of winning. You got me. I'm in for both the Sid Byzantium game and the Cordova DG game.

If you accept newcommers I would like to join monarch or emperor game. I’am civplayer since 1994 and longtime lurker at RBC threads and site. With C3C i discovered, that i will never have enought time to play trought the different conquests :)
I have 3 times beaten emperor in C3PTW and just finished successfully England in middel age scenarion at monarch level.
Problem is, that I have no previous experience with successiongames. But as I saw pretty many free slots in Charis roster, I decided to send an application.

Thanks again for continued feedback and signups...

@Kylearan - give it a shot! On the plus side, a Conquest SG is likely to be on the order of 5-6 player turns, far less than you would have to play if trying it solo. And in most games we're seeing "take up to 10, but 5 is ok if you like" rather than 'finish your turn!', due to the small # of player turns.
I would still recommend the Burgundy game, both because higher diff = even longer interturns, and because the team would benefit from your SG experience :P

@Pokiste - I wanted to be sure to have a Monarch game or two for that very purpose! (To encourage a few folks new to SG's)
Only for 'Deity' games do we tend to ask for strong skills or experience, but in the average Succession Game, the hosts are quite happy to see decent folks who play on time, don't have to skip alot, participate in discussion, and avoid exploitative behavior. I'll slot you in the Monarch Germans game :goodjob:

@T_McC and Doc - Before I posted "it's red" I started a game as Norway and yes, they're darkish red. The Magyars (unplayable) seem bright red. So I think T_McC is all set :D (T_McC... I'll put you in the Abassid list)

@Arathorn... :hammer:

Question for all, but particularly for Rus-Conquest players
Is it good, neutral, or an exploit to look up the starting locations of the opposing kings. Needing to wipe out 12 playable nations plus all the unplayable ones, in a time-limit game where others will be near VP victory, sounds like it would most definitely benefit from knowing which 36 cities in 12 nations (cough) we must conquer to win. I've never played multi-regicide and don't know how it compares to normal games. I would imagine the AI 'knows' where your kings are, and they're free to move them if they wish (do they ever do this?) So I'm neutral on the idea, leaning towards ok, but if other Rus players strongly preferred to play king-blind, we can do so. Given that most civs have 4-5 starting cities, failure to know this would increase our work by about 50% but not double or triple it.

Charis

Actually, T_McC, would you like my slot in the Turks game instead? The Turks are right near the Byzantines and so my two games would probably be pretty similar. In addition to Byzantium on Sid, I'd like a look at the scenario from the other end of the map. Perhaps Norway or the Danes if either isn't full - I'm Norwegian by ancestry myself, does the "play as your homeland" clause apply? :)

Regarding looking for king units - I think we may as well. Bits of information regarding that would filter back and forth between the various games anyway. May as well just have it all out in the open.

@Charis. Yes. The AI does move the King units some (but not much!) I've seen a few king units in different cities from where they started, but it only happens maybe 10% of the time.

Hard to prevent since everyone has access to the editor, but I think that's why the Byz have a wonder like the Intelligence Agency - so they can investigate cities while at war to find out where the kings are. Maybe it should be a per-game decision by the players?

There is nothing extremely wrong with Russsian city names except that they are listed in a strange order, few are misspelled, few are not Russian and never were, and few important are missing. I just checked again with maps I could find of 9th-12th-14th centuries and am pretty sure to compile a better list of cities, SGL, may be even MGL. And king's starting locations are also weird. I'll post suggestions when the thread opens. It might be possible just to rename the cities?

@Charis. Would it be possible to win by conquest as Rus without winning by VP? It is DG after all and AIs will have lots of units to be killed just to get to their kings.

@Charis, T-Hawk - I think it is simplest if I take T-Hawk up on his offer to be in the Turk game. I believe that leaves both the Turks and Abassids needing 1 more player (although I thought someone else posted an interest in the Abbasids???)

I'd be happy to have T-Hawk join us in the Norway game. We already have 4, but from the latest(?) list the Danes only have 3. So whatever Mixmaster Charis decides is OK by me.

IMHO it's fine to have a look at the editor for the Kings.
Several Civs (Fatimids, Turks) start with only 3 cites, or at least only 3 possible cities (Norway, Danes). And expecting a King in London, Venice or Bordeaux is obvouis. Also, everyone who already played the scenario knows where they are, and not checking in the editor is simply a disadvantage for those facing Civs with not so obvious locations.

Re: Colors
I am not at all colorblind, and I'm pretty sure to know what colors were intended. But it also happened to me that after having a look at that Scenario in the editor, the colors were messed up.

Solution: You have to clean the c3c.ini file; for any reasons, the civ colors from your last game are stored there, and seem to get applied for this conquest (maybe because of the number of civs, or because the Barbs are not white?).

Have a look at the MiniMap, and I never heard about a differing color sceme. Note all Civs existing outside that Scenario (Germany, France, Rus, Celts, Byzantium, England) have their generic color - thus Dark Red for Byzantium.
