Recommend me a Good Laptop

Does it have to be a laptop? Anywho, I bought my laptop for under AU$2000, well, $1 under to be exact... Mine is:

Dell XPS M1530
3gb RAM
2.2gHz Core2Duo
256mb nVidia GFX
320gb SATA HDD

All in all, a brilliant laptop, and it can play fairly modern games quite well. Obviously, heat is a major concern, but the XPS M1530 deals with it perfectly, even after a 5 hour stint on a marathon Civilization IV game with 16 civs! I haven't played either of the games you ask, but according to THIS site COD4 passes the minimum system requirements, but just falls short of recommended, so it is still very playable. World of Conflict passes the recommended requirements, to the point where it almost reached the end of the bar in the rating! Thus, easily playable.

Also, if you are in the States, you could pick it up well under US$2000 off the Dell website. But yes, it is still a Dell.

I highly recommend it!

This but upgrade the hard drive to 200gb 7200rpm and make sure you upgrade to the highest screen resolution (1680x1050). Just ordered mine for around $1600 and it should arrive on monday.

Yeah, but on a 15 inch monitor, that screen resolution would be too much for my liking. I would have got the 200gb 7200rpm HDD, but I needed the room over the speed of the drive. I don't exactly need blistering speeds, although I'll still buy a backup external HDD for my work sooner or later.

I heard that the higher screen res was limited when gaming because the GFX card wasn't the best around anyway. But I don't know, the standard resolution is brilliant as it is. I just wish the screen had a matte finish. Damn reflections!

The video card is a 8600 GT Mobile, which means it will work relatively well, but also that its not overly powerful. You might not care much for the high-res monitor as you will most likely not be able to run games at that resolution anyways.

The OP wanted a gaming laptop so 7200rpm drives are better especially now that they have the 200gb ones. If you want your gaming laptop to run like a desktop its necessary.

Just got mine on Monday and the screen resolution is probably the best upgrade that I made. I have a Sony AR with the lower resolution on a bigger screen(17 in) and the dell is much more readable. Everything is sharper and it takes advantage of your screen real estate.

I play World of Warcraft and Empire at War at max resolution with all settings turned all the way up and it performs great. Empire at War was really a drag on some of my other systems.

Question: would a nVidia Quadro FX 570M with 256MB be alright?

3. Also recommend me a mouse to use with it that isn't over $50.

A Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse. Bought it for about US$25 at Best Buy.

I'd get a Logitech VX. Around $50 online. My brother just got one and they're pretty good: small (for that tiny space on an airplane foldout tray) yet usable, even for big-handed people.

I know someone who has had good luck with Toshiba. For $1,675.20 you can get a Satellite P200/P205:

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7700 (2.4GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)

2048MB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz SDRAM (1024MBx2)

17.0" Diagonal Widescreen WSXGA+ TruBrite display (1680x1050)

ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 2600 with 256MB GDDR2 discrete memory
+ up to 255MB allocated shared graphics memory

200GB HDD (4200rpm, Serial-ATA)

200GB 2nd HDD (4200rpm, Serial-ATA)

Harmon/Kardon Speakers.

You can also add a HD DVD-ROM/DVD SuperMulti (+/- double layer) drive for just $150.00 more, but I'm thinking that may not look too attractive with Blu-ray winning out. Also I just maxed out HD space but you can play around with those. Biggest problem is lack of RPM on harddrives. Check out Lenovo and HP as well, they give good bang for buck.

quite a bit slower. I would go with a pair of 7200 rpm drives instead. Or 1 if you cant afford a pair.

The 4200 RPM drive will be noticeable slower than the 7200 RPM drive of the same size - it will certainly be noticeable.

The Dell XPS 1530 that duckmanbro will certainly work and is a good laptop - I myself have the Dell Inspiron 1520 and have been quite satisfied with it (side note: the 1520 has the 8600M GT DDR2 video card and handles CoD4 well, if not on maximum settings, but somewhat struggles with World of Conflict. The 1530 has the 8600M GT DDR3 video card and thus will do a bit better with both programs).

However, I'd recommend the Sager NP 5792 from powernotebooks.com over the XPS 1530. Here's the configuration you can get for $1968.13:

17-inch 1680x1050 display
GeForce 8700M GT graphics card with 512 MB DDR3 memory
Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5 GHz) Processor (6 MB L2 cache)
4 GB RAM at 667 MHz
250 GB, 5400 RPM Hard Drive
DVD R-W
Windows XP Professional

The 8700M GT gives a good amount better performance than the 8600M GT. The T9300 also will give a nice boost in performance over the T7500 (2.2 GHz) in the Dell. The hard drive will be a bit slower and have a bit less room, but will still be decently fast - and hard drive speed is irrelevant after loading data. You also get 4 GB RAM, which, though not useful in its entirity without a 64-bit OS, will be useful if you go with a 64-bit OS later. It's only $55 more than 2 GB, so I'd go with it even if you can't use all of it now.

If you prefer a smaller size laptop, the Sager NP 2092 on the same site offers everything the same except the 8600M GT (I think DDR3, not sure though) for $1618.93. Overall it's probably a better deal, but performance is slightly lower.

Slightly less balanced, but the best in terms of pure graphics for under $2000, is the Gateway P-6831FX from Best Buy:

Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium (32-bit)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5450 (1.66GHz, 667MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache)1
3072MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (1-1024MB & 1-2048 MB module)
250GB 5400rpm Serial ATA hard drive w/ 8MB cache2
17.0" WXGA+ Ultrabright TFT Active Matrix (1440 x 900 max. resolution)
FX Design with Copper Core Accent
Intel® PM965 Chipset and NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8800GTS with 512MB of GDDR3 discrete video memory
8x Multi-Format Dual Layer DVDRW with DVD-RAM featuring Labelflash™ Technology3
Integrated 1.3 Megapixel Web Cam

The total is $1700 before tax. AFAIK it cannot be bought online, only in the store.

The key here is the graphics card - it is far more powerful than the 8700M GT, and is nearly the fastest mobile card on the market. On the other hand, the processor is by comparison lackluster. So it depends if you're willing to trade longer IBT's in Civ for better graphics in CoD4. Not an easy decision, for sure.

As for mice, listen to what others say. I just use a regular mouse.
