Red and white checkerboard graphics bug?

From here, try this:
Go to the computer control panel (or however this is named in english, where you can also uninstall software, that menu), -> display -> properties -> advanced -> problem handling -> remove the tick at "Write Combining".

Translation of the menu points is probably not accurate, please use your mind a bit if you can't find the exact things ;).

This is not a solution, bacause the driver (the latest one) doesnt allow me to change these settings. Same thing for all computers we have (8 computers) with VISTA and Windows 7.
The problem with the Red white checker pattern occure after about 2 hour of gaming.
This problem is so annoying none here plays Civ 5 anymore. We wait for a solution.

Different graphic cards same problem. Guess it must be an Civ 5 bug.

That's just a dinnertable rug the size of North-America, so?

Aren't you lucky not having these problems?

And while what you said was a little bit funny, it wasn't very constructive :scan:

I have the same problems and haven't yet finished a game on large or huge maps, the settings I prefer.

you say its a known bug but almost 10 months later they dont have a fix? what the hell, it ruins the game for me, and my video card does not alow me to chnage the settings. :(

So is there a solution for this yet?

I want to play larger maps than standard!

It seems to be a memory leak of some sort. I get it later in the game with a huge map. It generally takes about 30 turns to make it unplayable. Exiting the game and restarting clears it up, of course that takes time. I've never had it on a standard map.

Same issue occuring on my system; after 200 turns or so when tiles are largely improved the checkerboard covers the map and obscures tiles and units rendering the game unplayable. Totally wasting the ability to play a good long game, and making my purchase valueless.
HP Pavilion, Pentium E5200, NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GE.

The above referenced advise isn't useful. Control Panel - Display- path does not exist, there is nothing on Control Panel called Display. And I don't read German...

Please address this issue.

Not sure I follow... my graphics card is 9300 series, min spec is 7900 series. That is a lower series number then mine.
Minimum System Requirements

Operating System: Windows® XP SP3/ Windows® Vista SP2/ Windows® 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz or AMD Athlon X2 64 2.0 GHz
Memory: 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 8 GB Free
DVD-ROM Drive: Required for disc-based installation
Video: 256 MB ATI HD2600 XT or better, 256 MB nVidia 7900 GS or better, or Core i3 or better integrated graphics
Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0c

Is there some sort of scale I am supposed to follow? How do I know mine is "lesser" and not "or better"?

doh, confused the recommend with the minimum specs (so 9300 < 9800), but after taking a closer look it seems i'm still right (sadly).

Short further explanation of the numbers:
First number: Version of the graphics card
Second number: Power of the graphics card.

So a card with a 7 as second number is more powerful than a card which has a 5 as second number. And that can get damn confusing, because newer cards with lower power are normally even less powerfull than the high end cards from the generations before (so a 8900 is probably more powerfull than the 9300).

Can't say much more about this, because i'm not a hardware crack, but this list sets the 9300 on the same stage like a HD 2400 (minimum HD 2600) or 4 stages under the Geforce 7900.

But to debug the problem still a bit: Are all settings already turned down to low? Less stress on the card will probably prevent the problems.

Thanks TJ, that helps alot. Yeah, I'm minimum all to try to prevent it. I will try a lower screen resolution.

i recently complained of this problem to aspyr (yes, i'm running the mac port). this is what i received as a reply:

We understand that the checkering is legacy to the PC.

With legacy issues from the PC version, it must first be resolved in the PC version in their patch release. We are still awaiting the PC resolution.

We recommend checking with the PC user forums at Civfanatics.com to see if they are continuing to see the problem with the latest PC patch release.

it took three e-mails just to get that limited amount of information out of the company. the first response to my question about the red and white checkerboard issue elicited the following response:

The issue of red dots appearing randomly on the map is legacy (occurs within the original PC code from which the game is ported). We are currently working with 2K to address this and several other problems in an upcoming patch. There is no estimated time for the release but we urge that you sign up for our newsletter to be kept informed of when it goes live.

of course, that issue of the red dots (which i also have) was obviously not what i asked about. anyway, taking aspyr's suggestion ... are people still experiencing the checkerboard problem? i'm not sure when the latest pc patch came out, since i'm using the mac version. thanks.

The last report (so, the last posts above yours) is with the latest patch, so yes, this is still there.
Would probably good to know if your graphic card fits the minimum specs or not, so that we can exclude something hardware related.

Oh, and i'm really positively surprised that the Aspyr support knew about the problem with the red dots on the map. We both know that this was not the problem you were asking for, but compared to other company supports, where the people really don't have a clue what you're talking about, this is really excellent, and they even pointed you in really the right at the end.

A :goodjob: for the Aspyr support, well done :).

It is not based on min system specs. I get the problem on a MacPro5,1, 6 core Xeon (i7), 3.33Ghz, 24 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB RAM. I saw it on my PC a year ago, I have seen it on every system I have played on (about 5 different ones). It occurs on the mac and PC version.

It does seem to be related to the number of objects (map size, number of units on the map) in existence. Early on a map, it almost never happens, but in the late game, it can happen almost every turn (quitting and re-launching to fix the problem).

If you ignore it for too long, it will eventually crash. (Although that may be unrelated).

The UI also gets progressively slower, and restarting fixes it, so there are clearly memory leaks, fragmentation issues, or some data structure fragmentation issues. Based on the code for Civ 4, which this seems to share, many of the algorithms are n squared or even worse, so tend to really break down when the number of objects gets large.

I finally got the dreaded. I think that it is a memory leak in the video memory. I had a really weird happening also. I was not even playing the game, but I was hooking up a live HDMI to my Pioneer tv and when I chose the 2nd monitor, an old screenshot of a Civ V game appeared on my laptop screen and froze the system. There is still memory leakage, or lack of memory release causing "cross talk".

Oh lordy lord

Doesn't usually happen. First time I see this.

Now we know, it is Genghis' horse painting up the town.

I am playing Civ5 with lowest graphics settings, updated drivers and as more of the map is exposed I get this red and white table cloth pattern all over the map. Any suggestions?

I am new to Civ5

Two strange things I noticed were:

In large games, my screen sometimes produces red and white checker patterns on the map.

Another unusual thing was a band of barbarians appeared in the shadow region and seemed to get linked to the mouse arrow - along with a patch of unworked wheat, and a group of sheep two blocks away - all three items followed the arrow around on the screen! Almost like ghosts - they were semi-transparent! Couldn't get rid of it so I closed the game.
