Red and white checkerboard graphics bug?

Moderator Action: Threads merged.

Short version of your problem: The graphics card is probably to weak (or the driver too old).
If you could tell us your specs, then we could tell you if this is the case.

I'M sure this has been an issue raised in the past but I'm having an issue on trying to get information on how to resolve this problem. My sytem specs are:

Intel R Core i5-2390 CPU @2.70GHz with an Asus gtx570 directcu ii overclock video card
OS: Windows 7 64 bit

I updated all of my drivers and I got the the checkerboard in both DX versions. I have been playing epic games and the checkerboards appear very late in the game. It is a bummer because this is where the game gets very interesting. I have heard all the supposed fixes for others- My system should be able to handle this game-it is not a temp thing-the drivers are not an issue- so given all of this what gives? Oh and none of the 'just play on a smaller map' because I have played my way through the whole series via epic games . So again, any help you can throw my way is greatly appreciated....

Or keep varifying files in the local cache until the rogue file is found that corrupts memory?

It happens when the game is re=loaded multiple times without a complete OS memory flush.

If the games starts doing the grey thing, the frame rate drops or stutters, it is time to start re-booting and varifying the local cache. If not, the red checker eventually takes over.

I attached a screenshot of a late renaissance game on Dieter's Europe map, and as you can see I'm getting to the point where graphical glitches are really starting to get out of hand, and it's only going to get worse until the game is entirely unplayable in normal view. I thought my PC's specs would be able to handle this game well enough, but I'm not an expert on these things. I'm not entirely sure what's relevant but here are some of the specs for my PC: AMD Phenom II x4 910 processor 2.60 GH with 8 GB of RAM. My video card is GeForce GTX 260.

I'm running ciV at all the lowest quality video options too. Normally when I get to this point in the game i just start playing entirely from strategic view, but it takes away from the enjoyment of the game for me. I'm just looking for any advice about what I can do to fix this, or even just to know if my PC's not built to get the job done. Let me know if you need any other info on my PC and thanks in advance.

Verify your game files through stream (you'll find out how/where).
Update your drivers (chipset and graphics).
Make sure your stuff isn't overheating.

The specs as they are are absolutely enough to run the game fine.

So i'm trying to disable write combining but apparently it's not possible on Windows Vista? Not sure about that, just something I saw someone post on the Nvidia forums. When I go into the troubleshoot tab for my video card the "change settings" button is greyed out.

Also has this been confirmed as an actual permanent solution? I don't want to have to be rebooting my PC and verifying local cache every time this starts to happen. I might as well give up on the game if I'm gonna have to do that every time. Thanks again for any help.

If verifying the files temporarily fixes it, but it reappears some time soon, then your HDD or RAM is probably damaged (my guess). RAM can be checked fairly easy (MemTest) and with the HDD... well there are program that can check it's health status, but good health doesn't necessarily mean it's alright. In Theory it should get worse over time and also weird stuff should happen to other programs/games (crashes as well). If that's not the case it's probably not the HDD.

I just updated my graphics driver (not sure what the chipset driver is, sorry). I also verified the game files but I forgot about the reboot. After doing both of those things I went back to my game to test things out, and unfortunately it only took a couple of turns for the grey tiles to start stuttering, and then about 20 turns in I started getting the red checkered tiles again. I'll try rebooting then verifying game files again and see if that works.

As for damaged hardware I don't think that's the issue since my PC runs automatic health checks and nothing has come back with any problems, but like you said that might not necessarily mean everything is alright. It may be an issue with overheating, but I don't know how to test that either, another thing I'm sure I can find out online. I was just checking the back of my PC with my hand and it was warm but that's just normal.

If it works my preferred solution would be to disable write combining but from everywhere I've read it doesn't look like it's possible with Windows Vista. I've looked all through the graphics card settings and can't find any option for it either. I really want to get a long term fix for this problem because I like this game and am excited for what the expansion is going to offer. Thanks again for the help.

Just finished running multiple simultaneous memtests. I let them run for several hours and they didn't find any errors.

Have you taken the case off and vacuumed all the dust out of it?

If your machine is dust free, then take the cover off and use a 16" fan to blow cold air directly into the computer.

Try playing the game, if the problem goes away, then it was heat related. If your current setup is pulling hot air IN, and you can feel hot coming out, I doubt that it properly "cooled" anything on the inside?

I'm sorry for digging up this thread, but i'm experiencing the same problem since the "Hot seat" Update.
It's really annoying.
My Specs(Toshiba satellite L550):
Win 7 64 bit
Intel Duo Core (4GB, 2.2 GHz)
Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4600 (2792 MB mem.)
The write combining stuff isn't working for me, because i can't change the properties.

I've gotten this too late game, so I think it is a memory issue. I'm on my 3rd game and have yet to see it, but did see it in the 1900's. When it has come up it usually disappears on a reload, but comes back eventually.

I think this is either a game bug or memory error as well. I've managed to play through two whole games on "Earth" type maps with multiple civilizations and it is never an issue until well into the late game for me. In addition, my GPU and CPU only get up to about 60 degrees celsius, which, from my understanding, is pretty standard operating temperature. My graphics card isn't the greatest (NVIDIA GeForce G210M) but it's good enough to run everything with medium settings (although I don't, generally.)

Hi,

Yeah, I know there isn't really a secret picnic scene with Dido, but I wanted to grab your attention and the title seemed appropriate considering the below screenshot.
Spoiler :

Dido_Picnic.jpg

Got this lovely picnic blanket texture when meeting Dido.

Also, as this thread shows, I'm not getting leader animations as I should either, but I don't know if it's related, so I kept both issues separate.

Have tried the Steam integrity verification process and also checked to see if my drivers are up to date; which they are afaik.

Your help is much appreciated, as everything was working fine before G&Ks and the recent .674 base game patch.

Thanks!

Have you tried lowering your settings?
Thanks for replying. I found a fix by simply turning off "auto-scale interface" and turning on "small scale interface" which also fixed my other issue of me not getting leader animations despite the correct graphics setting to get them.

I don't really know what this interface setting does as it looks the same regardless of what option I use, but when I set it to "auto", graphics don't behave as expected and "small" fixes the issues with no need to modify other graphics settings at all. I don't understand why it works.

I would of thought my 560Ti 1GB with a factory o/c would be enough for Civ5 G&Ks, even on the highest graphics settings, let alone low. It's not exactly a high-end card, but it's above the "recommended" cards in graphics processing power. It handles Skyrim just fine at 1920x1080 on high settings and the Skyrim graphics auto-detect puts everything to ultra-high with 8AA 16AF; not that I use those settings ;) .

Please see post #11 for a possible solution.
Thanks J. I have now found a fix which appears to have solved this and my other issue of no leader animations; namely, switch off "auto-scale interface" and enable "small scale interface". I don't know why it works, but I'm pleased it does ;) .

EDIT: Nevermind. I found this thread. It doesn't seem to have a solution, which is depressing, but oh well.

I get the following error when playing Civ V on my mac through Steam. I got this error before and after upgrading to Gods and Kings. I don't get it early in the game, but as I get later in the game, this seems to happen. If I exit the game and reload, it goes away for a little while. It seems to happen when the game is switching from one section of the map to another, almost as if loading the terrain for those areas is timing out.

I've switched to minimum video settings and that doesn't seem to have any effect.

Anyone have any suggestions?

That is from a below specs GPU that is unable to keep up. or is over heating. Most of the time the game just crashes. The only way to get past that is to get a better GPU, or make sure the computer is properly cooled.

Or you can try changing to the "small scale" interface, which did help a couple of people.
