Red and white checkerboard graphics bug?

Come on! My GTX560 overheats ONLY when I play late game Civ5 - even with graphics set to medium or even LOW - not on ANYTHING else! Ever! Sorry. I just find that too hard to swallow.

My graphics do weird things when my laptop is not properly cooled, is all I am saying.

This seriously has nothing to do with overheating - otherwise it would do it with other apps (it doesn't) and simply saving, closing & restarting the game would not fix the problem either (albeit temporary).
Until this is foxed, it makes the game unplayable for me. Time to write to Firaxis now, and I will reference this thread - something is definitely badly wrong in the game code.

HiRez. I suspect Firaxis will blame 'the mod', your computer, the weather, the time of day, EVERYTHING except ANYTHING to do with them. Good luck. :wallbash:

I just zoom in and out until they go away, which always works the first time. I think tht what happenes is that there is so much land and whatnot that it glitches since it has to put in all the graphics for every hex.

this is back for me with the new patch. and back big time.

i cant be doing with this. i need to be playing civ.

the vcredist and directx, yes.

i had it previously red and white, late game, only a few blocks. then it went away one minor patch, i think, it definitely went away anyway. zooming in and out always did help but thats not a fix.

now its everywhere and red and green. every graphic is down low. windowed mode.

it happens very minor in other games too . COD. skyrim. so its probably not all civ. im thinking its human error and i dont have the right box checked somewhere (the irony of a checked box does not escape me)

Post 14# is getting in the way :(

Unfortunately you cannot change the write combining setting in Vista/Win7 due to the "new and improved" driver model ;)

ive never heard of it before but i cant find the write combining setting. Win7.

I've tried the write combining thing and it does not work.
It is not the PC, as a 1GB Graphics card ought to be plenty sufficient.
It's a Radeon HD5750 - so not exactly a slouch.

I only get this in Civ 5, and it has made the whole thing unplayable for me as having to constantly shut the game down & restart it is tedious beyond belief.
Firaxis do not care either, so that is it & they will be getting no more of my money. Steam is bad enough as it is - I hate having to go through this, as it makes everything dependent on an internet connection.

I fixed this problem!

I fixed it by throwing a £130 odd pounds at a new Radeon HD 7850 card.

It's sweet.

Which begs to question if the game's constant activity shortens the life of video cards?

Get rid of this, please.

checkerboard.jpg

I asked about it numerous times and never got an answer, that would help me.

XP, DX9 and a quad.

I play up to Modern era and it happens all the time, when I try to play a Large map.

Now the grey tiles starts coming already at turn 140 in a SG-game, but when the polkadots are there, I wouldn't be able to play on.

Why are they there, firstly grey tiles! Is it memory? I was told CIV5 would be running on XP and DX9, and it does. But not on larger than Standard maps.

Anyone with an answer, please share.

Possible solutions, which you should try:

Uuuh...please check if this (the bottom part) is something what you can do/what you have activated.

I may have discovered a solution to the red & white checkerboard leaderhead background problem. It also appears to have greatly reduced the frequency of Civ-5 game crashes, too.

Background: Was able to play Civ-5 G&K without any crashes, using no mods, on my Windows XP machine with an Nvidia GeForce 9500GT videocard. However, playing G&K with even just one mod (any kind) would cause frequent crashing and cause the red & white checkerboard backgrounds to appear. Using more mods simply caused the problems to occur more often. (Did notice that just before each game crash, there would be a distinct CLICK sound from my computer.)

After unsuccessfully trying numerous suggestions from others on changing settings in Civ-5, settings in Windows, settings on my video card, and even upgrading to an Nvidia GTX550 Ti video card, I was about ready to throw in the towel.

Fortunately did one last Google search and found some helpful tips on the squidoo.com website. I did the following three things, and after about 400 more game turns played, have not experienced any more checkerboards. Also, the game crashes have dropped off enormously (even while using more than 20 mods) and the previous CLICK sound has gone away. Since I simultaneously did all three of the following fixes, am not sure which one did the trick, but at least one of them has surely helped.

1. Changed my Civ-5 game setting to run in windowed mode, instead of full screen.

2. Updated my VC++ libraries, by going into C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\VCRedist\ and then running vcredist_x86.exe

3. Updated my DirectX, by going into C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX and then running DXSetup.exe

Please try these possible fixes and report back if they work for you too.

From here, try this:
Go to the computer control panel (or however this is named in english, where you can also uninstall software, that menu), -> display -> properties -> advanced -> problem handling -> remove the tick at "Write Combining".

Translation of the menu points is probably not accurate, please use your mind a bit if you can't find the exact things ;).

I use a GTX260, too and those graphics corruptions appear if the tesselation is set to "low". Try medium instead.

I've tried all the fixes mentioned, and none of them work at all.
Again, this happens when I try to play on anything from "Large" upwards - I prefer Huge and it is literally unusable because of this bug.
It takes a while to appear, but once it does then the only "workaround" is to save, Quit & restart - and it will come back again, absolutely guaranteed.

Performance is poor too - I have never seen such a clunky game. It got a LOT worse after the "Gods & Kings" addon as well. It's literally unplayable now.

Well I need help I don't know what to do recently after playing for like 20min, when I click on my city the hexagons well the terrain have like a red and white checkered color to them. When a great person appears sometimes their little picture is blocked by a red color. Furthermore around this time the leaders screen appears to be buggy their video or scene do not appear but I can hear their voices. I can do everything just that I will see the background of what I was last doing in the game instead of their screen.
