I don't like Civ5 but I am still playing it, simply cze there is no alternative......

The game itself is not that bad. But since I started playing civ from I, it is so obvious to me that Civ5 is way to simple except I am afraid just the graphic comparing to I-IV. Its not just the AI, The UI itself is also very disappointing. There are so little information avaliable to make decisions; how are the other civs performing?, what pacts (like free of passage) other countries signed with each other? I feel like I am playing with my eyes covered, and swinging the sword in the dark to make sure that I will survive.

I hope other companies will see this opportunity and creat a decent civ similation to chanllenge 2K. I think we need some competition to maintain the quality.

sori for my english. just another daily angry comment abt Civ5

Awesome first post. If we all had angry comments like yours, maybe the forums would be a nicer place to be. Personally, I am too snarky and sarcastic and so we try to improve ourselves!!

There;s a movie where a news reporter gets people to yell out their windows "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!" I think that is what we are finding on general discussions. You get some Civ V users that don't like the game and come to the forums and see if it's just them and you find all these similar opinions and people are yelling "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!" and so people start thinking that they should be heard.

Now we're in this middle area where a lot of stuff has been said but we still play the game and it's too late now anyway, the dud is out there. And it's hard to know what to do. Every game I find some little new detail that exposes the shoddy product for me but I still play since that is the kind of personality I have. It's like the "one, more, turn" addiction without the "one, more, turn" feelings. Civ V is like the bad part of drugs where you are doing it just to get by but stopped getting the giggles from it.

EDIT: Oh so I picked "C. Glutton for punishment." Happy to see I am a minority because I can't say it makes a lot of sense.

A - I love the game, my personal GOTY 2010 along with Mass Effect 2. I've put more than 300 hours into it so far and I can't see myself stop playing it until I win with every leader on immortal or deity. I've never played any previous game in the series - you can use it as a proof that Civ. V is dumbed down and only for n00bs like me. :) I only wish it would run better so that I could play on huge maps with less waiting between turns and hope the AI will improve and more scenarios will come.

Not playing, dislike - no need to go into the technical problems with 1upt and such, frankly it's because it's just Next Turn Next Turn tedium, can't take that much boredom. (And alternatives are there. Apart from returning to Civ4, now hopelessly addicted to Europa Universalis III).

B, because I'm playing other good games, lately it was mainly EU3 and (as always) Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (PBEM games). Also I'm involved in the development process of the unofficial patch for AoW:SM, which became much more active lately, so it takes some time from me.

I think I'll go back to Civ5 after the promised hotseat/pitboss patch. I got bored with EU3, and now I'm going to go back to Wesnoth for some time (currently I'm trying to compile the latest version after making a change in the source code that makes combat deterministic).

I recently picked up the Age of Wonders Trilogy for sentimental reasons and to recapture that one more turn feeling again. I noticed that you are quite active in the community as a modder and a player.

Thanks for all your hard work in improving that brilliant game series. :)

Depends on the day i try to play it. I'm just waiting for the hot seat patch they're supposed to be working on. I like playing more than 1 civ during a game and I hate the AI civs. they just do too much nonsensical stuff.

B. I like it enough. Not as much as BTS, but well enough – although, apparently, not enough to make me stop playing other games to pick this one up again.

Considering the thousands of hours I plugged into the previous versions - the sleepless nights, the weekend marathons - I have to say it’s a bit odd to have a new version of Civ and go for long stretches forgetting its even installed.

dislike, no longer playing:

tl;dr

- multiplayer limitations
- no espionage
- no religion
- simplified tech tree
- uninteresting mid-late game
- inept AI
- inexplicable AI behaviour
- AI practically set to Always War
- civs are too similar and have either pointless unique features or wildly overpowered ones
- game cannot scale down to a quality level my PC can handle
- expensive DLC with little benefit
- DLC does not function in MP
- limited variations for map generation
- applying mods just as difficult as it was before if Civ 5 installed anywhere other than expected drive or path
- Removal of leaders from the game
- Addition of seemingly out-of-left-field leaders in place of classics I miss

I love the civ series and have played it for years, part of me wants to stick it out and get some expansions and see how it goes... but the rational part of my brain can't accept that as a reason or excuse...

I paid $70 for this, it is sub-par and disappointing, I'll just wait around to spend another $40, then another $40, and possibly three or four $10 to get the DLC over the next few years to see if it all comes together.

As an example, over the steam sales for Christmas I picked up Defense Grid: The Awakening, Hearts of Iron 3, Mount and Blade Warband, Monday Night Combat, Neverwinter Nights 2: Platinum, Men of War Gold and Dawn of War 2 Chaos Rising for just over $70.... and I could go on for volumes about why each of those games satisfy me more than Civ 5 and they cost a fraction of what Civ did. Don't get me wrong, if you want me to write a list of things I actually LIKE about Civ 5 it would be as long as the reasons I listed above for wanting my money back, Civ 5 is cool in it's own right, but it's not what I wanted.

I mean, that is just the desperate thinking of someone who loves (yes, it's love, really, pathetic, eh?) something so much they don't want to give it up. I do love Civ games, some people love an old book, or they love sailing or they love their spaniel, I love many things in life but this game series has always been one I could turn to for fun, like, automatic guaranteed fun.

This edition of the game I loved has a paltry handful of the things I loved about the old games in it, it's upsetting to me to see this, but I'm more sad than anything. Sad I can't be bothered to wait three years for it to get good, sad I won't be buying DLC, sad I won't have amazing stories to tell about Civ 5 like I do about Civ 4.

Even worse for me is, now that I've tasted this sour fruit, if I go back to Civ 4 I find myself wishing it worked a bit more like Civ 5 in some ways, so that experience is ruined as well.

I'm just sad, and I'll admit the truth there rather than getting angry and pointing fingers. I also admit I didn't go to school for business or game design or any of those things, I don't know what is RIGHT or what is WRONG in the world, I just know how it affects me.

More than 100 votes now.

Time for a short look at the results (all values rounded):
35% enjoying and playing :D
48% disliking the game
53% no longer playing

I assume these are the worst values ever for a "Civilization" game four months after release.

Time to have another short look at the results (all values rounded):
32% enjoying and playing :D (-3)
48% disliking the game  (unchanged)
58% no longer playing  (+5)

Conclusion: almost half of the fanbase dislikes the game. More than half are no longer attracted enough to play.
All of this just four months after release.

I wonder if this ever happened to a Civ game before in such a short time.

Mp fan, never liked the gameyness of sp play
i went back to civ 4 for a bit, mp is just as bad if not worse for early quits, and still get crashes/ blocking upon entering a game!
So imo evn as bad as it is, it is easier to get a decent civ5 game through my steam contacts

civ5 is simply not fun
imho it's a sub par empire-building, tactical combat war-game.
the fifth iteration of the franchise lost it's empire-building soul and that is exactly was makes it not fun for me.
to magnify my displeasure of the game, the tactical combat [against an inept AI] is not fun either. it's repetitive, tedious and therefore boring

as a sidenote:
the only way to acquire enemy cities is through conquest? WTH?
am i the only one, who misses bribery and culture flipping from the previous civ games?

This forum is incredibly biased towards people who like the game enough to regularly visit it/join.

The real picture is probably even worse, which makes sense when you realize that 100% of all players can't use all of the advertised gameplay features, and many can't even use all of the single player features.

Yep. The current woeful scores still somewhat flatter the game.

Civilization 5 is a giant cluster flock. (of birds)

I agree. I'm pretty sure at least 2/3rds of Civ V buyers have abandoned it, mostly reverting to Civ IV. At least, but probably more.

As for the cluster flock of birds: I think that's a bit redundant, as a flock is a cluster of sorts already, no?
Instead, when talking about Civ V, I think it is more precise and non-redundant to call it a clusterf[censored].

I'm not sure how accurate this is. A lot of people would come here for help with problems they are encountering. A lot of people won't go out of their way to find a forum for the game unless they are facing something that they need help with. Technical support, for instance. You would think that the more you like the game, they more you'll come back, but if we can see that that certainly doesn't hold for at least a plurality of people here, then I see no reason to believe that it holds as a general rule.

Also, there's the whole casual gamer thing. This game is more suited to casual gamers. I personally like this, because I'm a casual gamer myself. But casual gamers are far less likely to be on a forum about the game.

I don't like vanilla all that much and wouldn't be playing it, but with mods it's a whole lot more fun.

dislike. stopped playing the week of release. Played 4 for awhile longer, but I have become turned off to Civ in a lot of ways. Just came back to the board to see if any major improvements have been made...

I'm enjoying the game. I hated stacks and always have. Once I really got the hang of exactly how every unit moves over every different terrain type, I came to enjoy the planning involved in taking an enemy city. I also have come to like the happiness system but it took a while to get used to it.

The UI, graphics and sound are pleasant, clean and professional.

I wish the AI was better but I just up the difficulty level and still have a good time. I can win most of the time on KING now.

I love the game, but God damn I hate the Eldorado natural wonder in multiplayer games. Have ruined a few games for me.

None of the above ;)

I seriously dislike the game in it's current state as a whole, in spite of some good features ... it looks like the master plan behind the game design was not well tought out and the later corrections are band aids at best.

Said that, I think the game is probably possible to put in a good state, but that need a full x-pak and some serious changes in the core rules. If that will happen is a completely diferent issue, though ...
