I was able to recover a copy of The Archive current to May 2014, meaning that everything else should be in the o/l db.

One caveat: I'd done a great deal of organizing since then, so I won't be able to retrieve items anywhere near the speed I've been able to (and I most certainly won't have time in the foreseeable future to reconstruct the file schema.)

I will try to set up "Logical Blocks" of .zip (or whatever) files in chunks along the lines of "WW1 Aircraft" etc., as feasible, and provide a publicly accessible Dropbox link accordingly.

One suggestion comes to mind immediately. Back up that drive immediately with a second drive, and then never work online with either back-up hooked up to your computer.

Second suggestion, per my son is, get off of Windows. He uses either customized Linux or Macintosh, for personal and work computers.

Thanks, as ever. I've already adapted the first suggestions; viz., "I don't do Windows" ( ;) ) my consulting work is tightly tied to common, Windows platform software.

Since it looks like you have to use Windows, just be very careful on hitting any links. I have taken to copying links when possible and then running them through Whois to determine where they are from. The ill-intentioned are getting very good at playing games with address spoofing.

allow me to rejoice as well at this good news .

So how goes the battle with updating all of the Files, Oz?

Slowly, but as well as possible. Wolf_66 (for one) has been astonishingly helpful - "astonishing" in the sense of how extensive his own graphics library is! ( ; :goodjob: )

What I salvaged on my own was from mid-2014, and I had the luxury of 1-1/2 years of "hobby time" since to meticulously organize the Archive into what was it's recent form (without recourse to anything like a relational database, I could find, say, a pre-dreadnought battleship by any of Ship Class ("B") Civ Era ("Industrial") or my own, far more graduated delineations ("1870-1914") Right now, the simple "re-collecting" from the db and gents like Wolf is considerably time consuming: I'm guestimating that that "simple" process (e.g., d/l-ing a unit created by Delta_Strife et. al. into a folder labeled "Delta_Strife++" rather than renaming each unit with my usual creator-credits tag "=D_S&AdeB&Wyrm") will take about two months. Re-constructing the (recall: totally lost) file structure will be fairly easy to recall, as much thought went into it ove a considerable period of time. Then slotting everything back into so readily retrievable a form ...

I'm glad to hear that you were able to recover the files, and - not the least - to have the will to do the time-consuming work to re-organize them into a manageable database. This will benefit all of us who love to fiddle with Civ3, so a great THANK YOU, Oz. I really appreciate your effort.

Regards Sigurd
