Religion Picking

Actually, rather than atheism (which has only really been at all significant in the last century), what I'd be interested in seeing is some sort of inquisitor-type unit that can purge a religion from a city.
I've suggested something like this in the past, as an option to get rid of the "religious spies" that you have in your cities. There should be a price, of course: loss of population seems to be the obvious one, and without any production benefit like you get from slavery. All the buildings for that religion are destroyed as well. (This is on top of the other costs--you can't build additional monasteries, and if you run FR later, you don't have that religion around for its happy benefits.)

in a recent game i founded all 3 early religions. i did not have borders with the other guy on my continent since i ain't about to let them settle where i wanna settle. judaism did spread to him, via river or coast. so i changed over to judaism just to keep things happy politically until it was time for him to die. seems odd to let "the enemy" pick your religion but it makes sense in the game.

I usually stick with the first religion I found, unless I found Christianity in which case I switch to organized religion, and then convert, and spread Christianity through out my empire. I try to aviod Hinduism and Islam. Those are two religions that have never really interested me when I was finding myself.

Historically correct, many people changed for the religion of their master or more powerful neighbor, either by force or willingly, to preserve peace for example.

EDIT:

Plus if you founded that religion, it was already yours.

hmmz true. i love the game but have probably the least knowledge of history of anybody on these boards. my history teachers were terrible and i just never got an interest in it, i wish i had. so i wasn't even thinking about that aspect, but you're right.

and ps hannibal if you're reading this, you weren't more powerful. it was just that i was not yet ready to kill you, i wanted peaceful times to build up my infrastructure. oh wait, you can't be reading this, i did kill you later.
