Depending, if you focus on founding religion, there's a likely chance you decrease focus on stuff like Culture, Production, Army, etc.
Pros - Don't think there are any, eventually you will end up with a religion from rival nations, Dennis said that "the AI will defeniately are going to play that religious spreading game"
Cons - If you don't focus on your own religion, you might not end up with perks that could help you win the game.

Pros : religion can offer good economic bonusses like extra food more growth ,extra culture more gold or even better army
cons : Because there are now modifier with religion its pretty obious that having a other religion can cause wars with you're neigbhour(s).
