Repeated crashes

Can anyone help me? I am getting repeated crashes whenever I start up Civ III and the the error message says that it's a Type 1. I know others have mentioned this problem before but this is happening to me whether I'm playing a brand new game or the monster game I'e been playing for ages.

I've got the new 1.21g (?) patch installed and the problem seemed to start the moment I installed it, but trying to reinstall the original version of Civ seems to have made no difference.

My machine is fairly old now, it's a G3 with a 350 MHz processor and 320 MB of RAM and I'm using OS 9.2. Does anyone have any advice?

Regards,

Your machine is fine. Try removing all saved games (place them in a new folder) and try a game. Did you play the open-beta patch? This may just be a matter of compatibility between different versions of the game. Even though new games still crash, the presence of the old games may interfere. Don't ask me why, but it happened to me while playing the open-beta patch. You may have to say goodbye to the monster-game! :(

When are the crashes occurring? During diplomacy, pathfinding, etc.?

Thanx for the advice I'll try it. The crashes happen whenever I end the turn so I get one turn of play and that's it.

Could I try removing all the other saved games except for the last version of the monster game I was playing and get to keep playing it that way, or is it a case of everything I started before the 1.21g patch is now unplayable?

I don't think I was using any beta versions though!

I'm not saying this is THE cause of your crashes. It could be. If it is, as long as you do not have saved games in your 'saves' folder things should run fine. Try taking all saves out and placing them in an 'interesting saves' folder (you create) then start a new game --- see what happens first. If crashes continue then there's another cause. Good luck.

the new patch increased memory allocation, perhaps this was the prob?

if dojoboy's trick doesn't work, try to increase memory allocation of the game without the new patch, perhaps this will save your old game.

you can also try to load an earlier save, this saved some games of mine!

If you've got file sharing enabled under MacOS 9, turn it off and try again.

My antique Mac crashed also frequently. With the new 1.21 patch I had to enable virtual memory. No more crashes hence.

Increase memory allocation.... I would recommend flashing the PRAM on startup (alt+apple+P+R) and then rebuilding desktop (alt+apple) if your machine has crashed several times in succession with a Type 1 error :)

Thanks Frunobulox,

Thanks I hadn't thought of that, I need to rebuild my desktop.
