Resentment towards English?

yeah, like Winner said, there's some language-nationalists who resent the english.
I'm a bit borderline myself, I have to admit. For example, if there's a good german word, I'd prefer it over an "Anglizismus", especially if many people use it the wrong way.
And I really dislike these adolescent pseudo-words (like replacing the german prefix "ge" with "gay", or replace "wen" with "wayne"). :shake:
But I have no problem with english words entereng the german realm. If there's no appropriate german word, I'll happily use the english one (like many words from the it-area).

My personal pet peeve is the term "handy" ("German" for mobile telephone). If you import an English word for an object, at least make sure you get the right one! Besides, what is wrong with calling it "Tragbares Fernsprechgerät" or "Funkfernsprecher"? :mischief:

agreed, I never understood what got into you guys when you picked that word (though we're not much better we just use the Brandname of the first cellphone network in switzerland: Natel)

there are plenty of things wrong with that :ack:

I think english sounds kind of sad really, melodically speaking. As much as it pains me to say this ;-) swedish just sound so happy!

Happy? :ack:

"Vem finner svenska glatt?"

German can't ever be eliminated by the way, because of one single sentence:

"Was ist das für ein Quatsch?
Spoiler Translation :

Who finds swedish happy?
What's that kind of BS?

I suppose I do harbour a bit of resentment towards English. Partly because of the schizophrenic orthograph, bizarre phonology, and obnoxious grammar, partly because there are subjects I have to discuss in English, since the relevant technical vocabulary just doesn't exist in Swedish.

(I know this isn't particularly rational. It's not supposed to be.)

I was wondering if this mattered. English is now the most spoken language on Earth. Do any of you nonnative English speakers resent having to learn English to do or enjoy any fun things you do with the language, such as post on forums like this or play English video games?

In short, do you resent having to learn English? Do you dislike the fact that English is so heavily used in the world today?

My own opinion is: you shouldn't resent it. Some language has to be the most commonly used, and it just so happened to be English.

I'm fine with English.

Better than Finnish or Hungarian.

I resent speaking english to other Scandies.
If I were to move anywhere else in the world, I would as quickly as possible try to learn the language spoken there. English should be used as a backup or as a lingua franca when many nationalities meet in one place, such as this forum.
