In timed matches, when do you consider resigning? Do you resign out of manners/ refuse to out of manners?

I tend to resign if:

  • The opposition has time and force-mate material, and I have only one king

  • For some reason, I can't play on, since it gives points to the opposition and saves them from waiting
Any thougts?

I generally resign if I'm down a piece or more in the endgame with no compensation. I may resign sooner or only down a pawn or two if my position is irredeemable. Against a lower rated opponent I will hold out longer before resigning.

I never play on until mate except in blitz. Making someone queen a pawn & then chase you around & mate you in correspondence is just knuckleheaded.

Never surrender against a far lower rated opponent! They may yet blunder. Against an advanced player closer rated to me, I will usually give up if I'm down a piece or if checkmate is imminent.

I give up when;

-I see that the position is lost
-I see exactly how they should play to win or I'm down so much material that there is no chance at all
-The win is straightforward and there is no reasonable chance for them to go wrong

This does not apply to team games. There I play on a bit longer just in case.

I resign when:

A. The position is completely hopeless.
B. I can't see a way for me to win in under 5 moves (because my opponent can see it by then and might be able to stop it).

It is situational, depending on the strength of the opponent and the importance of the game.
But as a rule I will resign in a position that is beyond salvation, either because of huge material deficit or if the winning method of my opponent is too obvious.
