A post from moysturfurmer in the Only 30 Civs in base game thread made me think of the possibility, especially now that they have the whole hard line diving of the map, that one thing they could do with it is to have map resources that only exists, or that exists in much more abundance in the part of the map you start and others in the part of the map you can only get to explore in exploration. While we have no info on that and can likely not be the case at all when we learn about the age when they do the next stream, what do you guys think of the idea?

Especially now that the resources, even the empire ones doesn't seems to be essential like strategic ones on previous games that would lock you of units and buildings without them, I think this would be an interesting mechanic to make the player want to proactively interact with the new world to get those specific bonuses of resources only available there, be it through exploring and settling lands there, conquering existing one, or through trade with them.

I think that is almost certain. Most resources will probably only be available in one part of the world.

This was always a “thing” in Civ 6. Luxury resources in that game were assigned by continent. Each continent had 4 luxuries and they couldn’t spawn elsewhere.
I never noticed that at all, it make sense.

I guess in this case it could be different in that instead of a random 4 luxuries per continent, they could make some specific ones that has some bonuses people want to always only be in the "continents" of the other part of the map, but probably the same system of random would already make it work and give more variability.

Somewhat related to this: some resources only become relevant in the 2nd and 3rd age, while others go obsolete. It would make sense if some of the "new" resources would spawn exclusively in the new world.

Do we know how that works? Do resources just disappear? Or resources that are luxuries in one era become bonus resources in the next?
There's no separation between bonus, luxury and strategic resources in Civ 7. And yes, we don't know how it happens, or how buildings become obsolete.

I think the only confirmed thing is new resources in Exploration Age (spotted after Age transition in the Antiquity stream).
I don't know if there is still a thing as luxury / bonus / strategic. Empire resources vs the ones you can slot in settlements, that yes.

I could see any of the following
- new growth resources exclusively in the new world for example access to potatoes gives a city +2 food per turn. In the final age these may spread to the old world.
- new happiness resources exclusively in the new world for example tobacco. In the final age these may spread to the new world
- Some mined resource mines in the old world may become “exhausted”, situationally incentivising going to the new world for those
- Some animal collecting mini game for menageries or zoos. Think like archeology but without a specialised unit
- General science bonus just for knowing more about the map

I’m sure there’s more possibilities
