Inspired by my own game that can be found here

Golden Silence

and an input from whomp, I would like to know whether there is an interest to play this sort of game on deity as had been done in the classic, original game hosted by gozpel

Silence is Golden

As this is a game as tough as it can be, only players that are top notch at playing AW should take part. On this sort of level, you can't afford poor play or MM. You also shouldn't be too sloppy to follow the ruleset (that was broken a few times in the original game).

I am thinking of certain players of course, but am open to new players as well, with a proven record ;)

So, besides myself and whomp, is anyone up for this?

I don't consider myself topnotch, but I would be willing to play on the second string. I'll lurk for sure.

I'd like to try this. I hope we can at least find a fourth player, or the turnarounds will be very short--especially with Rat involved. ;)

I'm in. Deity will most definitely be a challenge.

Like TheRat, I'm currently playing a game with the Dutch at DG on continents. I think the challenge here is the AI does not come for deals very often. I'm in the middle ages and have had a total of two tech trade offers (neither were fair trades either) and 4 declarations of war (one allied) and no peace offers. I have found the GLib to be extremely valuable since it's allowed me to keep up, so far, techwise and judicious use of cash for short rushs.

I'm looking forward to playing again with TheRat and for the first time with a player of Northern Pike's caliber.

Oh and a housekeeping item. I will be out of pocket next Thursday through Sunday.

great, let's get at least one more player then we can discuss the settings. I though of Greebley, but it seems his family commitments keep him from joining.

That's not a problem at all, Greebley :goodjob:

But I would welcome another player anyway. Anyone up for this challenge? The original game was great fun.

Ok, so let's discuss the settings.

I assume we take deity and continents? On a standard map? Which nation shall we take. The original was played with Sumer, which was ok for defense, but we really lacked good attackers.

Anyone up for a suggestion whom to play as?

Would Rome or Greece be too obvious?

welcome Mumpulus, a great AW player for sure

Now, with this team I am not scared that we could falter

Carthage has a very powerful UU, and it hasn't been played for a long time

Just a refresher, if only for me:

The Numidian Mercenary is a Spear upgrade with stats of 2/3/1 which costs 30 shields. It requires no specific resources.

It attacks like an Archer but defends like a Pike.

I hate attacking these things.

The Carthaginians start in the best position of any civ to drive for the Great Library, since they begin not only with Alphabet, but with Masonry for the pre-build. The Seafaring trait is marginal, Industrious good. I'm not a fan of the Numidian as a UU, since it's an overpriced Hoplite--the player pays ten extra shields for an attack factor of two, but it's still a defensive unit which shouldn't be used to attack much. The Numidian will normally trigger a despotic GA, but OTOH the timing is right to help the GLib build. Anyway, the Carthaginians have an interesting mixture of qualities and I'd be happy to play them.

Along with France. I've actually used the 2nd city of France and thought of using Carthage this way also, in some of my recent Sid 20k attempts, since I can pre-build the Forbidden Palace or something with them, and I've got Alphabet.

Also, if you have ivory with France or Carthage you can research Mathematics right away and pre-build the Statue of Zeus.

ok, Carthage it will be

I will take a standard continent map with an acceptable start this weekend.

Hannibal and his mercenaries it is.

ok, off we go for a start with the agreed setting:

Standard continent (70%), no barbs, no SGL, deity difficulty, Carthage

and just so that we are all on the same page, these are the strict rules.

1. We may never initiate discussions with AI or start trading. Only if the AI starts to open the dialog box, are we allowed to start trading and haggling.

2. We have the option to boot the AI off our territory, it is not a must, but can be used. However, this means strictly booting only without starting negotiations.

3. We are not allowed to purposely enter enemy territory to get booted in order to start negotiations. If we enter enemy territory and get the boot, we will NOT start negotiations

4. We will never give in to AI demands, but are allowed to make peace, even if it costs us some gold. Peace can solely be initiated by the AI.

5. We are not allowed to use mapstat or open dialog box to check AI's resources etc. So, we will not know the AI's science progress or other information unless in the dialog box.

6. No embassies established by us, spies are wanted for steals later on.

7. Alliances or RoP, trade embargos are allowed.

I emphasized some parts in bold as they seem to slip through some people's mind. But to enter the enemy territory to get a dialog is simply too easy and cheesy.

I played 20 turns and went for few warriors and a settler. I wanted to settle so we can now start the prebuild immediately. The location for the second city looks pretty good as it will have the cow and later games and wheat.

I have not met anyone, but the luxes suggest we have some neighbors for sure. The west seems a dead end which gives us some breathing space.

As for research, I thought a min to mathematics will give us the best chance for some trades. First off, we will get some cash and also have the run for a second tier tech that others can't research yet.

I would settle eastwards before filling the backyard. I would also try and get out some curraghs for suicide runs. Contacts are valuable here.
