RFC Europe playtesting feedback thread

"The game you were playing you are refering to" doesn't sound much better... Pointless debate however, we should move on to the actual answer!:)
It was posted a couple of posts earlier, the Dutch... standard settings.

Sorry, I didn't get that... I got...
"Can you describe the game you are refering to?"

Anyhow, it's pointless.
If you want a precise answer, ask a precise question... not a hard concept.
If you want help, describe your problem precisely. Not a hard concept.

Thanks for continuing to beat on this boring dead horse...
Now, back to the mod already, jeez.

Whenever I try to load up the mod, I get an error message. I have downloaded it twice, beta1 and beta2, and neither of them work. I download it, and extract it to my MODS folder in the My Games, Beyond the Sword folder. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

You should unpack it in you Program Files/Firaxis/Civilization 4... folder. If you unpack it in my games, there is a chance, who knows why, it doesn't work properly. Also, have you updated your Beyond the Sword to 3.19? That might too cause the crash.

Can you post us this error message you receive? This would be quite helpful to locate and solve your problem.

Hmm, back to this plague thing. I my current Byzantium game the plague hit me about 600+ AD something and all cities were reduced to one. There should be a %-limit how much a city can shrink. For example maximum 67% depletion.

And another question, the first goal of the Byz, largest and most cultural: If you own another city like Alexandria which is larger, you lose the goal?!?

Yes, the victory condition checks the tile, not taking exceptions for "inner opponents" ;)

You sure it doesn't check the name? I recall that at least in normal RFC, you could “cheat” by, putting a city on another tile and rename it to, say, Paris and still win the UHV of “Paris” being the most cultured city in the world.

i still dont understand how anyone is supposed to complete Byzantium's 2nd UHV. Anatolia at 1300, anyone realize that is almost the exact same turn Turkey spawn? Is the Byzantium player expected to beat Turkey immediately on spawn in order to complete the goal? If anyone knows how to complete that UHV, do tell me. thanks

Kind of. I suppose this one was fixed in RFC.

It doesn't really factor in either way. They don't build their city until a turn after they spawn, so you still get the goal.

The new French UHV is hard! In Emperor. I'll try Monarch next time.

I settle Paris and Pamploune(2W of Deer) first, then conquer Barcelona, that's 2 in Pyrenes. The next is Marseilles, not so hard. But I have no enough time to build a necessary force. Bordeaux is useless. 2 cities in N.Italy should be Florence and Milan, But I didn't manage to conquer them in time. And I had only 1 city in west Germany. --Shouldn't settle Tours.

In Emperor, barbarians are massive, and I doubt anyone can tech toward Renaissance art and complete Chateau de Fountainbleau before 1401, with the first UHV also completed......in monarch that shouldn't be problem.

I didn't have any problem.
The Turks spawn in 1299, but they don't found their city, if I recall correctly, until 1302, the next turn.
Anyhow, when I played as them, I didn't have a problem.
Did you play it and lose that UHV?

Playing a game as Spain. Kick Cordoba's but and quickly took over the Iberian, leaving a gap for Portugal, who I knew would become my vassal anyhow.

TURK - CORDOBA RESPAWNED... another constant complaint of yours that you can drop.

After that, I really had no problem... but I think that waiting until 1600 to have an entirely Catholic Iberian penninsula is toooooo long.

This type of thing has been mentioned before, that sometimes it seems like I am just pressing NEXT TURN too often (a problem with late game core CIV4 too). I don't know how to fix that except to make the timeline shorter and the goals smaller.
Instead of 6 colonial projects, make it 4... instead of 1600AD, make it 1492 (and I get that there were still Muslims/Jews there in that time)...
Just my thoughts...

I could also probably crush the entire map with the hammer potential of the Iberian...

Ok here's my feedback to the new french UHVs. First a quick story what happend.

Found Paris on spot and Tours east of the southern wheat. The Missionary spread Catholicsm in Tours because Paris had the culture anyway. Researched Calendar, Theology and Manorialism, then directly to Farriers for Lancers and Stables. After that i researched for Feudalism to have Armored Lancers. Once Paris hit a nice size and i got some mines and production i started to pump out Lancers nonstop. The first two went to Milano and captured it easily. One lancer went to Firenze, which had no Defense (I guess the plague hit them). So i had my two cities in northern italy. The next two Lancers went to Marseille and Barcelona. In the meantime Milano and Tours started to produce my first two settlers. Paris was still producing lancers. Next two Lancers went to Bordeaux and the other barbarian city. Still was researching with 100% because all the capturing gave me much gold and the pope is frequently giving gold because there are no other catholic civs he may give gold to. So next Settlers head for Frankfurt and Lyon. So the only city left was Pamplona, which was defended by two crossbowmen and not doable with lancers, but once i hit feudalism i upgraded three of my lancers in Barcelona and captured Pamplona easily.

This UHV is a bit more fun then the last one, but it isn't very challenging either. I had no problem to capture the two barbarian cities and settle a third city in northern italy. So here are my suggestions to improve playing Frankia. :)
- add some spearmen to the independent cities or add fortifications to the cities
- make the UHV require capturing the barbarian cities as well, perhaps third city in italy
- add more pressure through barbarians in northern italy and western germany, there are some but they can hardly fight Lancers or Armored Lancers, so increase the numbers or the unit type
- adding more norse invasions especially north of Paris would be cool, i only saw one once near Bordeaux
- add some fish or anything to the bretagne, its allways the last spot to place cities in

My opinion:

1. Found Paris and PAMPLONA (2w of deer, 3n3w of Barcelona), that's 2 in Iberia, and
Pamplona is good with production. Missionary goes there as well. Let Pamplona be main production house.

2. Conquer Bordeaux with initial axeman/archer, the guaranteed win gives you exp. Bordeaux sucks in production, so we have to get serfdom. Tech toward serfdom, and also astrolabe.

3. Conquer Marseilles. It will flip to Burgandy now, so build only units in it.

4. Capture Barcelona once it hit 2 pop.

5. Around 708-716, before Cordoba spawn, send a troop to where Valencia would be, then Valencia would NOT SPAWN -- great for us, we can settle it later, of course near river.

6. 2 cities in Nothern Italy -- either capture Milan and Florence, or spawn a settler and settle in a crap site which would flip to Genoa.

7. 2 cities in west Germany -- we have Augsburg to capture, so we need a settler. I suggest settle on wheat or some resource near Frankfurt, thereby give Germany a bad city plan.

8. Have some defense in Bordeaux. (Berserker)

9. After the first UHV and all those cities flipped, we should have Paris / Bordeaux / Pamplona / Barcelona left. Settle Tours and Valencia, then we conquer and collapse Cordoba. Meanwhile, settle Sicily (Agrigento, the best spot) and conquer Tunis(good city) ASAP. After that, build an army to conquer Jerusalem, to support the upcoming Crusade. Build Temple Mount in Jerusalem if you don't get Judaism in any of your city. Get Alexandria & Dumyat too. That would be 12 cities. Ceuta is also nice for its position and gold.

Because we no longer have to get the historical territory of France, we can expand more freely.

I CAN"T BELIEVE IT!! FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, CORDOBA HAS RESPAWED!! lol

My point is that they should have set dates for Arabia and Cordoba to respawn, and in different locations of course! Arabia, as the Fatimids (if they collapse before the crusades) or Ayyubids (if they collapse after Jerusalem is taken), Mamluks (if they spawn AFTER the crusading period is over) and all in Egypt.
As for the Cordobans, they should respawn in Morocco of course (Marrakesh) and Granada, as the Almoravids and later the Almohad and then finally the Emirate of Grenada (if they reconquer southern spain, from the Taifa's)
Thats what should happen, not them respawning in Damascus and Cordoba continuously, and which they rarely do anyways, but again, thats not my point

In general though, I'm quite sad in how this mod has turned out, there seems to be little interest in taking into account people's decisions; and in general very little accountability for actually continuously modding it

I completely disagree with your entire post...
Regarding islamic respawns, just relax... it's not meant to be 100% historical, if it was, who would play?

Regarding the way this mod is being handles, sounds like sour grapes because your previously constant whining about islamic civs weren't really heeded. Granted, there are things that haven't been addressed, BUT, for the most part, this is the best mod mod out there, EASILY.
