RFC Europe playtesting feedback thread

I saw it was given a 9 rating on Gamespot. Shouldn't be bad...
You can update it continuously via Steam. I dunno tho if it only works for Steam buyers...

The reviewers who gave it good ratings are obviously paid by Firaxis. You know how bad civ 5 is??

-A civ cant use its unique ability at all (unique ability is same as UP). Tell me, if a reviewer honestly reviewed a game, how can he miss it?
-You can win a cultural victory, but a bug prevents you from doing that. How did no one spot that during beta testing?
-A bug that causes your game to crash upon founding of the 70th city in the game.

And a lot of very obvious bugs, that either the testers or the reviewers should have obviously picked up. But no, they just missed it. Which tells me this game had little to no testing at all, and the reviews are all paid by Firaxis. Unless of cos, there's a better explanation...

I've played Civ V and compared to the release of Civ IV, Civ V is great

France -- the first UHV doesn't appear to be working. By 840 I had:
Toulouse
Barcelone
Marseille
Lyon
Bale
Treve
Milan
Florence

In addition to Paris & Bordeaux. According to the UHV map, these cities are where they should be. Yet, No Cigar! (????)

I also had issue with the stability math. Playing Poland, with an empire stretching from northern Turkey to Holland, I get a ONE star on Expansion. Huh?????

The rating for Expansion stability doesn't mean you have a large empire. Your empire is overexpanded. And that decreases teh expansion stability too. (IIRC even more than an underexpanded empire.)

For the French UHV, a savegame would help.

Not sure if someone mentioned this before...

I played as the Franks and got the first two historical goals without a problem...

Then I started building colonies; When I got to six I still didn't have the UHV. I checked the victory screen and it clamied that although I had acheived my colony-building goal, I had not acheived the Great Wonder goal, even though I had the Arch in Paris to prove it!

This drove me alittle nuts as it took me a few starts to figure out how to acheive the first goal (the 8 cities). Did this happen because Cluny Abbey went obsolete before I finished my colonies?

Thanks for the report. There was a bug in the Franks victory condition code so that when you got your second goal (wonders) it actually counted that you had achieved your third goal. This bug is now fixed (fix will be in the next beta).

Please give us some screenshots or savegames. In most cases its just a missunderstanding of the UHV areas. Actually i don't know where Treve should be so i guess you are missing the two or atleast one city in western germany.

I found the answer. Treve and Bale are just off enough to the west to lay outside the "west germany" area, by one or two spaces. Perhaps it would make better sense to label the UHV as "east of the rhine" (since "west germany" really did not exist back then! ;)

That's a common problem with how UHV's are described -- it's not always crystal-clear during play where the areas' limits lie, especially if you don't know about the UHV maps in the mod's manual. I had to refer to those a number of time to get it right. More often than not, cities are right at the edge of their UHV areas (example: Florence, Barcelone, etc.)

I noted some cities were misspelled (small detail), untranslated after conquest, or inaccurately located. I'll see if I can come up with a list.

Having fun obviously! Cheers! Thanks for a great mod! :goodjob:

Edit

On the matter of France's UHV -- I got 9 or 10 colonial projects built. Six are needed to clinch the win, but I'm not getting it. What's the deal now???

Another one that doesn't work is the first UHV for Cordoba. Cordoba has to be the biggest city in 1000 AD. During play there is a 999 AD followed by a 1002 AD on the next game turn. If the coding looks for 1000 AD specifically, it won't work!

Hey,
About the French UHV malfunction, I happen to have a screenshot and a savegame of 1404.
I had no problem with the first uhv; the second uhv is checked as being the third, and the third uhv never works no matter how many colonies you build..

This will probably never get read, but here we go anyway:

I'm having a ton of fun with rfceurope, its way better than rfc in my opinion, especially because of the larger space for each civilization (civs can have more than the 3 or 4 cities they used to be able to handle) and here are some of my comments

I've played a lot of different civs: ottomans, arabs, kiev, genoa, venezia, england, france, spain, netherlands, all on viceroy. Each civ seems to be way different from another which i like. There is a big improvement on the stability, I was actually able to expand to the true extent of the ottoman empire with no trouble at all, in additon other civs with "unstable" ratings can actually survive (it seems france is often in this state). However civs that should collapse such as Byzantium, never really do (in my genoa game they were still there til about 1650, when the ottomans finally plunged them into independent).

I tried Kiev and Arabs, both which I really liked until..... BARBARIANS. noone really warns you when theyre going to come, and they are so unbelievably powerful. Seljuks are no match for the arabs arbelestier, you basically have to spend 20 turns building an army to defeat them. Kiev was barely able to get longbowman in time, but not enough time to mass produce them to prevent the onslaught of Mongols. Often times 8-10 would spawn every turn. Even with castles and city defender 2 on a hill, they were no match, because they often would just ignore well defended cities and go farther west. Also, they were spawning in random locations in my territory (i thought they could only spawn in fog of war) and some spawned in eastern hungary on my west borders in mountains and attacked me from there! Every other team ive played, kiev died within 10-20 turns of mongols coming they died, UNBALANCED.

From that aside it's really well made. I like the wonders, resources, projects, corporations, the whole bit. I think protestantism is well done, same with crusades, catholicism could use some upping though, it just cant compete with the other 3 in bonuses. Genoa was actually a ton of fun to play, I got to conquer most of Italy, North Africa and of course the required islands, and the corporations were tons of fun.

One note about france, their first objective is VERY unrealistic, you basically would have to settler spam and then your cities would flip when burgundy, germany, genoa/venezia spawn. I think the German spawn should be removed AT LEAST, and maybe the italy one. france didnt invade Italy til the 1500s... but I guess if youre talking about charlemagne, then france should start with a sizeable force of armored cavalry crossbowman longswordsman and settlers. the first objective shouldnt be almost impossible

Also plagues i feel are just too common. There should just be 4 i believe, because some civs get hit 4 times - wayyy too much

Anyway this is a great game, and I hope people still make this, even though civ5 is out (civ5 cant support this awesome of a game)

EDIT: Two more comments, the ottomans starting position seems a little weird. There is no reason to settle the city spot (and frankly no room, constant and the city to the west cover all but 1 tile) so the AI spawn there and get a TON of overlap. Also the spawn area for the Ottomans isnt large enough, it takes a long time for the ottomans to conquer EAST, wait didnt the ottomans come from the east?? They should spawn around ankara (middle of turkey) and get everything east of that, and basically conquer westward.
Also the plaque starts in odd areas. As the ottomans i was able to avoid plague because i could get open borders closed soon enough, because plague usually originated in italy or around there. Didn't plagues usually come from asia? i feel like the plagues should start in constantinople or kiev

Yogiebere: Glad you like the mod. The barbarians arent overpowered. You just need to prepare for the spawn dates. Guisarmier usually does the trick.

The starting location for the plague is random.

Also, if some civs always collapsed there would be to little freedom in the game.

The Guisarmier are only affective against the Seljuks. They only have +25% vs. Light Cavalry. Keshiks will crush them, because the are Light Cavalry. So the strength will be 12 - 7.5. The most effective way to deal with the Keshiks are Druzhinas. (and Knights, if you researched them) Ofcourse you should build walls and castles too to defend your cities.

First of all, welcome to this forum yogiebere and thanks for your feedback. We are still reading feedback, but we don't get much in the last few days, so this forum appears to be a bit "abandoned".

The point about Byzantium, it will collapse immediately when losing Constantinople. Sadly the Ottoman AI doesn't capture Constantinople very often. About Kiev and Arabia, yeah perhaps you are right, if you are not aware of the barbarians coming than it is rather hard to defeat them. Actually if you do know about this then it's to easy in my opinion. We might add a popup 5 turns before the invasion to inform the player about whats coming. The ottomans are spawning more to the northeast to ensure that the AI goes more for constantinople but that isn't happening right now.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Yeah is that because of 5? it just cant compete with the awesomeness and complexity of this mod (i think 5 is too much like civrev)
so with the barbarians, how long do the spawns last for, 20 turns? and yes byzantium was still in byzantine hands
also i dont like moorland at all. England is supposed to be this fairly secluded science beacon of europe right? well in all the games I've played, they simply workshop all of england (due to special ability), dont ever capture ireland, and are almost always close to last in score, with surprisingly little technologies. This is because the moorland lowers the ability of england to cottage mass, and the workshops prevent any gold from being made. I propose that their ability be changed to workshops AND cottages get + 1 production (or towns, something like that)

Actually, it's not that hard to achieve the French UHV (if only the bug would be fixed for the third UHV). ;)

To clinch that first French UHV, there is no need to spam settlers! See below.
Spoiler :
Send that second startup settler with a bowman due east, past the Rhine, and build a city there (forget Tour for now). Meanwhile, send your lone axeman straight away to Bordeaux. It's an automatic win. Ditto Toulouse. (Watch those Viking raids later on.) By then, you should have one or two catapults available from Paris. Your next attack goes against Barcelone, followed in this order by: Marseille, Milan, and Florence. Have the new cities produce archers/crossbowmen for garrison duties. With a couple of catapults and some macemen, they will all be easily conquered. While the conquering takes places, plan for two settlers -- one headed for Lyon and the other north of Milan. Voila!

I agree with you it's contrived anyway. Eventually, I was able to hold on to Italian cities, knock both Genoa and Burgundy out of the game, and reconquer the Rhine's east bank. Some of the logic of the 1st UHV kinda sorta makes sense for Charlemagne's empire--it's a good thing France does not need to retain all those gains to achieve the other two UHV's.

My question is: when is that third UHV going to be fixed???

I tried the Kievan Russ and had a blast! Granted, getting rid of the Mongols was tough, and I ended up sending squads of knights after them. Very doable... if painfully bloody.

So far, the two I had the most fun with were the Kievans and the Genoans. Hated running the Bulgarians (frustrating) and the Austrians (blah...)

It is done.

Since perhaps more people are subscribed to this thread -- See the starting information thread for information: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=9164458&postcount=1

At some point we'll have to move to incremental patches and a real installer so that people don't have to download such large files for new versions. A good thing to work on getting set up for the next version...

Now in beta 3, Orthodox monastery still get only +10% research, not 25% of Catholic counterpart. Is that supposed to?
