[BNW] Rhye's Catapult 2020-06-02

I would just say to move them down (I don't know if resources are preplaced), but I founded my city where Nazca ends up being. Because when you found the original starting location they literally have a single tile to work off I think. (plus the spot pretty much takes up a good Terrace Farm spot)

Additionally, if you move them down then chances are is you won't lock out units that the game spawns across the Andes.

I will try to replicate and hand you the savegames tommorow, also, was wondering, do you know where the game logs crashes? I crashed very late game with the Incas, but couldn't find the crash log.

@Marshmellow Bear unfortunately the game doesn't log crashes per se, just lua errors in the lua log and preset debug errors in net_message. If you really want to help debugging, follow these guides:

https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/building-a-dll-based-mod-in-2019.645887/
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/how-to-compile-the-dll.479374/
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/a-guide-to-debugging-crashes-with-a-custom-dll.506328/

The idea here being you can see exactly where in the DLL the game crashed, and usually why. (I'm still not sure why you wouldn't get a crash message, even tho it happens. Memory leak/recursive stack calling? idk) No custom DLL? No problem, Rhye isn't using one either, so just compile the BNW DLL unaltered, and you should be good to go.

Here is the list of the rebel factions, one for each civ.
If you have better ideas please propose.
Where I added "/" it means that there is more than one alternative (of which I consider the first one preferrable).
In brackets, adjectives that could or could not be part of the name.
  • Atenist Egypt / Rebel (Egyptian) Dynasty
  • Assyria
  • Heavenly (Chinese) Kingdom
  • Princely (Indian) States / Maratha Empire
  • Achaean League / Rebel Greek League
  • Rebel (Persian) Satrapies
  • Senatorial (Roman) Provinces
  • Lybia / Canaanites
  • Japanese Shogunate
  • North Korea
  • White Huns
  • Latin (Byzantine) Empire
  • Normanlands / Gothia
  • Rafida (Arabia) / Kharijite Arabia
  • Vichy France
  • Second Spain / Anarchist Spain / Catalunya
  • Commonwealth of England / Honourable Trading Company
  • Nazi Germany
  • Red Russia
  • Belgium / Batavia
  • Traulitania(n Portugal)
  • Golden Horde
  • Chinchasuyu
  • Tlaxcala
  • Prathet Thai / Seri Thai

Attached is a zip with :

- The lua and net_message_debug log files
- Four screenshot kinda of explaining some of the issues I found
- and two saves games

- ARTEMISSHOWUP 2 displays Nazca working on Temple of Artemis (with Oracle being built somewhere else) despite the fact that ToA doesn't show up on the list of buildable wonders anymore
- ARTEMISSHOWUP allows you to hopefully replicate the issue, I don't know, it seems bit random and unpredictable, and is not save-persistent.

- Found the city where the other Settler is, that seems to have triggered the ability to build the temple for me. Hopefully it'll help replicate the issue.

Dear Rhye,
I am a Chinese college student and I love playing Civ5 and Civ4 from primary school.Actually we Chinese have our own communities. Not everyone can use English well.It is so exciting to hear that u will make a RFC mod for Civ5.I really love Chinese history and I register this account to give u a suggestion.https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=456710095&searchtext=xia
U can try this civillazation mod.It is so great because as a Chinese,I think the biggest feature is our dynasties. We have a strange feeling about the dynasty and forgive I cannot express this feeling clearly in English for u.I think maybe u can use this method to design the mod.The most Chinese history book written by Simaqian (actually there are lots of history books far ealier than it)shows the dynasty of xia.Almost every student know Xia because the founder of xia is so famous in China.Dayu.I believe he is the best guy to stand for China. He is a real guy in the history who can be proved by the archaeometry findings of Shang dynasty. We love our ancestor .The earlier the more .And Qin emperor doesnot have a good reputation in the history because of Confucianism. What I say is a common sense in China(of course students know more).

Hello, thank you for registering!
And thank you for the suggestion.
Could you tell me exactly how are dynasties represented into the game?

I hate to be nitpicky, but the Download doesn't link to any file.

Otherwise, great job as usual, Rhye,

  • Normanlands / Gothia
    • I'm assuming these are danish rebels? If so I'd rather love to see the Swedish civilisation spawn as rebels.
  • Nazi Germany
    • I'd perhaps try to stay away from using Nazi Germany as rebels. Perhaps rather use Bavaria or Saxony (see question on geographic rebellions) or Weimar Republic or German Democratic Republic?
  • Kurdistan
    • I'm assuming these are Ottoman rebels? Why not just use the Turkish Republic as the Ottoman rebels?
  • Slavic Austria-Hungary
    • Would it be possible to instead of having Austrian-Hungarian rebels simply split the country into Austria and Hungary upon a rebellion? In either case I think I'd rather have Hungary as a rebel state than Slavic Austria-Hungary.

I thought I'd give some input on the rebel names. I have some suggestions (see above), but also some questions to how rebellions will work. Especially for those that you've (so far) given quite geographic names.

Would the korean rebellion always be the northern cities? Or could you end up with a korean rebellion in the south named North Korea? Same would be for Catalunya and Spain.

Another question is if it'd be possible to name rebellions based on what social policies you've chosen? If you've chosen Liberty for example, there'd be a monarchist rebellion (Kingdom of [nation name]). In Spain's example there'd be a Carlist Spain if you had chosen Liberty, or a Republican Spain if you chose Traiditionalism.

thanks for your reply. In the xia mod,u can find that when they complete a policy tree or get another civilization's original capital, then the xia will get into the next dynasty and get a reward(like get into golden age or have a new UU or get a special unit)Of course,at first this civiliaztion is a little weak but it will be stronger and stronger at last. However, based on the game balance, the reward is not so stronger as the dynasty past.(in the begining xia has no UU,the first reward is a UU )and in different dynasty ,the new founded city can get different name.I believe that u can use Ingame Editor to get a quick look of this mod.It is very interesting and great.I guess the author maybe a Chinese. As for me ,the biggest feature of China is history(not just because I love history,I study programming). In the past, history contains politics and literature. No matter in any different dynasty, the way of thinking as a Chinese does not change.

Good points.

I'm trying to avoid too specific geographical references or linking them to the current social policies.
So I researched on what could have been a faction that either controlled the country for some time, or historically created problems, or an ethnical minority.
The name will appear only when the human player's civ collapses. Instead of being dead, such a civil war begin.

The specific cases:

- Regarding Nazi Germany, I am aware of the connotations, and except for WWII scenarios should not be a playable choice, but I believe that as long as it's a foe that the player has to soffocate and it's not playable, it won't harm. Additionally, the civ colours (Germany's reverse colours) are black and grey, so it kinda fits them.
- The point about Koreas is correct. However, usually the capital is Seoul and the development takes place northwise. So most of the times the northern part could break up.
- The Ottoman civ is renames as Turkish for the whole game.
- Sweden is already appearing as a city-state.
- Austria is called Austria-Hungary for the whole game, and it unfortunately can't be changed. So rather than a Hungarian faction I have to think of something else.

v46 waste.jpg
I wonder, is anybody actually playing?
I did a full run of autoplay and I let it go until the far future. What I found is an interesting wasteland in which Byzantium was one of the few survivors.

what is the logic for revolts / indie city independence?
Seems any unrest can trigger it. I was at about -2/-3 unhappy for ~10 turns and 4 cities rebelled .. seems harsh, especially with Civ5's broken happiness system.

here's a modified map:
- small changes in topography everywhere
- more resources, especially in us / south america / afrika.
- buffed europe and north america. The land might look crazy but needed to match India/China.
- north america and parts of south america have european resources (cattle, truffles, horses) and when fully utilized can be very strong.
- more food in china/india.
- less coast more ocean in low population / low interaction areas (Africa, australia). More coast in high interaction / high pop areas (bay biscay , east north american coast)
- lots of atolls for productive islands (aegean, japan home islands, carribean)
- more food and better topology in iran
- copper in cyprus
- more food and resources in egypt
- more desert in MENA
- more desert in sahara
- more desert in gobi
- buffed food in mexico and california
- added copper in sweden + shrinked norway
- urals have more mineral resources
- russia has more fur and buffed overall.
- more desert in australia
- manchuria has more mineral resources but it is harder to access (mountains, marshes)
- added marshes in belarus and finland
- various tiny touches.
- indonesia has more food and spices.
- philippines topography work
- mexico topography work
- quebec topography work
- alaska topography work
- greece/cyprus/crete topography work
- rocky mountains topography work
- hawaii rework
- colombia rework
- siberia re-arrenged some resources
- added pearls to map
- more jungle in jungle regions (central america, south america, africa, indonesia, indochina). Now jungle areas are close to impassable until Biology (so no more paths through them).
- added missing rivers in spain, france, thailand, us, uk, russia, etc (not perfect but at least better than nothing)
- moved socotra in a better position
- modified maghreb a bit.
- modified azores / canaries
- other

railroading:
- added natural wonders where missing (north america, kailash helps religion in india, gibraltar helps spain tech faster to colonize)
- added uluru near arabia to help them spawn islam. Fits in on the map in terms of aesthetics.
- added duplicated sri pada near lyon/naples(as vesuvius) to help spawn catholicism/protestantism in italy/spain/germany
- added duplicated sri pada in china to spawn a religion.
- added duplicated mount kailash as mount athos to help spawn orthodoxy in balkans and anatolia

Notes:
india, china, rome, arabia can be really powerful and run ahead if not checked.

Maybe somebody finds this useful. Makes the game more enjoyable for me (i play with tech rate at 50%, easy to modify).

Cheers.
