Central to most of what he is doing, though, is his focus on what he says are the dangers of ''Islamic fascism,'' which Santorum often talked about as he toured the state during his re-election run last year. He said at the end of his campaign he made a decision o stay in the public sphere because of the gravity of the danger he thinks America faces from radical Islam.

At the beginning of the year he joined the conservative Washington think tank Ethics and Public Policy Center, where he is heading a program that focuses on highlighting what it calls the threat from radical Islam and other anti-Western forces.

''One of the reasons we are not doing well is because our leaders, including myself, have not been direct in describing this enemy and why it is so dangerous,'' Santorum said.

Santorum is also writing a book on a related topic, speaking at conferences and universities and has signed on as a contributor to Fox News.

''The key for me was to stay in the world of ideas,'' Santorum said at his office at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, where the walls are still blank and framed pictures are still in packaging atop his desk.

Last week,, Santorum announced that he is joining the Washington office of the Pittsburgh-based law firm Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott part time.

''From the night of the election on down, I have never been sad, never been discouraged,'' he said. ''I'm just immeasurably grateful for the opportunities I've had and the opportunities I'm having.''

It's not what you would do. And it's fair to guess that he had politics on the mind, if you want to be cynical. But it's not unreasonable behaviour.

While in the ICU, the family must have formed a serious emotion attachment to the baby. While a funeral might have been more appropriate, people have often wanted to grip and hug the bodies of dead loved ones.

I showed my kid a dead raccoon last summer; and we had to discuss in depth why a family member died another time.

Some people believe that kids should be shown the truth. It really works in some instances, so it's not always the wrong option.
