Ridiculous characters

I saw it as a poignant statement about the fundamental meaninglessness of modern war: you can be the best soldier in the world, doesn't matter, you can still die so easily by pure bad luck.
But how many enemies did he have in that battle and how did he manage to get hit by a melee weapon? It would be a bit less ridiculous if it was like a random blaster shot that killed him.

Alright, "war" in general then. Even pre-modern stuff...

>Be Basil I
>born a peasant
>rise through Byzantine society eventually usurping the throne
>be a highly capable administrator without any education or job experience
>defeat empire's enemies and begin a Byzantine golden age of territorial expansion and military dominance
>die in hunting accident

Thank you so much for your post, Valka. Very much appreciated. I hope you're happy about me sharing your sentiments regarding Matt Smith, I hate him with a passion. Everything from his acting to his voice to his persona is really off-putting to me, it's the main reason I've stopped watching Dr. Who. I liked the first two Doctors of nuWho, I think they're good as actors (not great) and occasionally funny. Honestly, maybe I'll just stop watching the nuWho altogether and start with the old one. Thanks again!

Anyone fighting in the battlefield can die. At times generals/kings even managed to get themselves killed after the battle was won, by doing some dumb personal pursuing of enemies. Eg Georgios Maniakes, who would otherwise have become Basil II V.2 (already won the main battle of the civil war, so he would be taking Constantinople, probably unopposed by the emperor who would likely suffer some massive rebellion).
And considering that Maniakes was pretty much The Mountain (or rather The Hound) from GoT, and he was killed by arrows, yes, it can and does happen. :)

:D

Thank you. It's nice to know that all that typing was appreciated.

Yeah, as soon as I saw Matt Smith, I thought "Damn, he reminds me of Jim Carrey" (Canadian actor/comedian who is really not funny, in my opinion).

As mentioned, though, "Day of the Doctor" is worth seeing, not for Matt Smith, but for the other Doctors (8.5, aka the War Doctor, played by John Hurt and the Tenth Doctor). Tom Baker has a part in it as well, but since was nearly 80 when that was filmed he obviously couldn't play the Fourth Doctor. It was incredibly emotional to see him in this episode, after 40 years. There have been a lot of people who said that when he was on screen, they just started crying.

It reminds me of my last game of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic:

Spoiler Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic :

>Be Mission Vao
>Be abandoned by your own brother and still think he is great
>Befriend the wookie named Zaalbar by nearly getting yourself killed
>Survive on the streets of Taris largerly by yourself, it is more you than Zaalbar that keeps both of you alive
>Explore the undercity, a place so dangerous that pretty much everyone else would try to avoid it
>Somehow manage to survive to the age of 14
>Meet some strange offworlders
>Get ambushed in undercity, Zaalbar is captured.
>Luckly you meet these strange offworlders again and ask them for help in return of helping them
>However it showed that these offworlds need you alot more than you need them
>Who can open door, spot and disarm mines, sneak and actually know undercity
>Save your friend doing pretty much all of the work yourself
>In return you get called a spolied kid or something like that and your friend make a lifedebt to a complete stranger who really did nothing
>Take revenge upon the Vulkars who have tried to kill you before by pretty much killing all the Vulkars in the Vulkar base
>But you are convinced that the Hidden Becks are the bad guys so you go to their base and kill everyone in that base including Gadon who is probably the closet to a father you ever had.
>All those killings just to save a person you don't even know
>A bit later you help these people (who for the most part treat you as nothing more than a spolied kid) to commit murders and other crimes for a few hundred credits who they or you dont need.
>Eventually you help them and yourself getting of the planet which have been your home, doing so you killed alot of people but hey these people are evil.
>See your homeworld destroyed just because of one person
>Travel around to different worlds and commit a large amount of atrocities which include:
  • Kill your best friend's father. But hey he attacked us first and was not a good father either
  • Wipe out a whole tribe just to save your brother who willingly abandoned you
  • Kill a bunch of students trying to escape the sith and later kill off everyone in the academy. But remember the sith destroyed your homeworld and dont deserve any mercy.
  • Help the main character poison the kolto supply
  • A whole bunch of other crimes and attrocities but its for the greater good as these credits go to saving the galaxy.
>Also you kill pretty much everything that tries to kill you complete without mercy and regrets
>Amongst other you kill the bounty hunter Calo Nord who is stupid enough to challenge you and your "friends". What chance did he have against you, when he was 14 he was just a mere slave while you are 14 you are on an exclusive mission to change the faith of the galaxy.
>The same faith happen to Malaks apprentice. The force and lightsabers are so overrated
>Eventually you and the rest of the crew is captured but you manage to break them out
>Some time later you get to learn that the person you follow was the former sith master but it don't matter because he don't remember it. The fact all these crimes have been done it obvious to help the republic and the galaxy.
>Later you reach the star forge system and help exploring the unknown world, killing more stuff.
>Eventually the former sith lord has to enter a temple which only force sensitive are allowed to enter, boring as it is pretty much the first time since you met him you are not with him.
>A bit later you see the former sith lord returning but not with the old man but with the young woman that was the whole reason your homeworld was destroyed.
>You can not believe it but the former sith lord is actually planing to return to his former position and the young woman who have that always talked about the dangers of the dark side plan to take the role of apprentice to the return sith lord.
>As long as they said they where going to save the galaxy you had no trouble at all helping them in commiting everything bad they could come up with but sith is absolutely of limits to you.
>Instead of running away like Carth, even though they would let you to and continue the fight against the sith later you ask to be killed knowing that everything you have done was just to help the old sith lord getting back his position meaning everything you have done was a complete waste.
>Worth to mention is that you could have killed the returning sith lord at some point later given he had no ability at all to spot stealth stuff. A bunch of mines and perhaps a sneak attack and everything would be over.
