[R&F] Rise and Fall General Discussion Thread

Chandragupta, probably.

I said earlier that I thought we'd get a First Look on Thursday of Christmas week, but I'm changing my guess to Wednesday. There will be a teaser on Tuesday, under this scenario.

There is the question of which of the leaked videos will be shown. I'm guessing the Cree.
Well, I got the timing right (probably)! :D Just looks like I got the content wrong.

Looks like there'll be no first look today...

Maurya have been more or less confirmed from the first look (they released the video)

If we get a first look video evey week in the next 5 weeks, it's most likely going to be the Cree on the first week of the new year.

Yes, and given the Monday holiday, the teaser will come Tuesday again. Hopefully the leader won't be too obvious and we can get several pages of obscure facts and speculation before coming to a consensus.

The real question is, once they do the FL for Maurya this week, and the Cree next week...

...which country's television will randomly broadcast a leak from a video game giving us the next FL?

I mean, not to knock the Netherlands or China, but I can't ever remember a video game making the news (well, at least not since Tipper Gore and "violent games cause gang wars").

I think that should be our new mini-game (besides diving rods and/or sacrificing chickens, per normal): Guess the leak country!

I'm thinking... Ukrainian television will leak Georgia for us.

I think in the Netherlands it was less a game making it to a TV show. It was more that the royal family and news about them appears often on certain tv shows. It was news about the royal family, not about the game.

I'm thinking...
Do we have any fanatics following this thread from that region of the world who also watches TV to keep an eye out for coverage?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Georgia next after the Cree. But if there's a pre-teaser intentional leak, I know I won't be the one to catch it....

Being in Metro Detroit, I'm highly unlikely to get any teaser releases. With the possible exception of Canada and/or Quebec. Canada because Windsor and Detroit basically share a media market, Quebec because a huge chunk of the (south of) Detroit population is French-Canadian (like me!).

The CBC did not mention about the Cree, but it was Wikipedia that prophesized the Cree release (with the featured article of the day being about the Canadian residential school system), along with the Chinese leak.

If you think about it, all these so called "leaks" must be intentional or at least the majority have to be. If they didn't want to, 2K and Firaxis would not tolerate it. After all, leaks are happening every week. It would be a huge deal for any company and I presume they would tighten ship immediately and someone would be getting fired. Or at the very least, looking at what happened to Ed Beach last year after the accidental opening of the Civilopedia, we didn't hear nor see him for weeks. They didn't even acknowledge it before, I think, until just last week when Andrew Frederiksen finally humanized the mistake by jokingly commenting on it on the live stream. Ed wasn't that amused though, if I recall correctly.

So, like I have said before, this or most of it is Firaxis' new and weird marketing strategy. (It is great and not so great for many of us, especially if you really want to be surprised).

I'm pretty certain the Dutch one was the matter of a TV station not being familiar with game industry common practices with regards to NDAs. One branch of a media conglomerate got ahold of the Netherlands First Look and had the bright idea of sending it to their gossip TV show. Somewhere along the line, the idea of not talking about it until a certain date failed to get passed along.

And these Chinese leaks are almost certainly incompetence, not malice. Being that it happened shortly after Firaxis (and nearly all the other 2K branches) went on holiday, the videos were sent out with instructions to put them up on the local video sharing websites with appropriate time delays. The person in China put them straight up without the delay, then realized their mistake. The videos were then made password-protected so no one else could watch them and, as I understand it, are now down completely.

It’s almost certainly incompetence. What happened was that the uploader used “access with password” functionality instead of “access for uploader only” (don’t know if that Chinese platform supports scheduled publishing).

Don’t know how the videos look now, but for some time after them “fixing” the leak you could still see the videos being there - just completely greyed out and without thumbnails, only video names remained.

Didn't the Chinese 2K leak something else as well inadvertently? One of the first DLC or something?
