[R&F] Rise and Fall General Discussion Thread

I guess there won't be a livestream this week? Though it would be fun if there was one with the Zulu and/or Cree, or some other publicity-related official Firaxis stream. Or maybe the announcement of a commercially available Civ V/VIsoundtrack release with music from all the expansions and DLC.

Well, not like you have much effect shooting at Helicopters with rifles in real life is it? :p

Historical Trivia Time:
1. In 1941 the German Luftwaffe issued a Warning to its pilots in the Russian Campaign, that Soviet infantry was using massed firing of small arms whenever German aircraft flew overhead at low altitude, and causing serious damage to fighters and bombers both.
2. In Vietnam small arms fire brought down numerous unarmored 'Hueys' and damaged even more.
3. In Afghanistan, even the heavily armored Soviet Mi-24 'Flying Tanks' were brought down by rifle-calibre machine-guns, because while you can armor the Hull and pilots, you can't armor the rotors, which are what keeps the whole thing in the sky!

In other words, Yes, you can have much effect shooting at Helicopters in real life.[/QUOTE]

Been a while since I saw it, but I believe he used a minigun.

In Rambo 2 or First Blood part 2 he used a bow. ;) Archers defeating helicopters confirmed. :D Of course those arrows had explosive tips if I recall correctly (haven't seen the film since the 80's).

Three days!

My weekend's going to be great.

Watching the 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday, playing Civ6 R&F all day on Saturday, and watching Oscar nominated shorts downtown on Sunday.

I might install the game on Thursday and do a preview viewing of it, but hold off playing it until Friday night.

My wife is excited that Figure Skating starts a day early, on Thursday. I'm not sorry that I will be missing it.

I have Friday afternoon free, and I think the opening ceremony starts around lunchtime over here, so I intend to do both simultaneously.

Its convenient that the bit where all the athletes parade into the stadium always takes like 3 hours, which means I can just have that part on in the background whilst playing civ :w00t:

The Philippines has two athletes coming to the Games: one for alpine skiing and figure skating. Although to be honest I'm looking forward to the latter than the former. I'm also looking forward to curling, because it's a weird sport, but otherwise I'll just watch whatever's on that's interesting.

Nevermind... We Civfanatics will be competing against Korea as well, albeit not in Korea. ;)
Unless you're a Korean player, then....

Not interested in the Winter Olympics. Well, the curling might be good, I suppose.

I am interested in the Civ Olympics, though. :D

The first event will be the Mongols versus the field in the equestrian events.

Followed by the Mongols in the tearing down walls event.

Finally, we’ll have the Mongols in a pure elimination event.

Michael Martinez!

Meanwhile in the civ side of all things, we will be 100% sure we'll get all the happiness this coming weekend.

My hype train is not stopping.

I'm curious where people from those countries train. It can't be the Philippines, right? I'm guessing they go to another country to train.

And yeah, can't imagine anything more boring than watching the opening ceremonies. Actually I consider nearly all Olympic sports to be boring to watch, I'm sure they would be fun to play though. I prefer Summer over Winter Olympics as I do enjoy seeing some of the sprinting and it's always nice to see the U.S. absolutely dominate in gymnastics. U.S. usually doesn't do as well in the Winter Olympics.

For me, my best Winter Olympics memories come from the old Commodore 64 game of the Winter Olympics way back in the mid 80's. The only game I was ever able to beat my older brother at.

I have a feeling the Mongols will dominate the Olympics for me (my first game will be Mongols). War will be an Olympic sport. Other countries participating in my Winter Olympics will be the Dutch, Scotland, The Cree, the Zulu, Mapuche, Chandra India, Georgia, and... (wasn't there one more expansion civ I'm forgetting?). I will probably play a large map so there will be some vanilla civs as well, most likely ones getting the most changes.

edit: Korea, that's the one I forgot. Their book smarts won't outwit my athletic prowess as the Mongols. Muhahahaha.

Yeah, that old C-64 game was a classic.

The Mongols will definitely dominate the equestrian events. For some reason, the competition will keep dropping out and will decide to participate for the Mongols instead. :D

There are some big malls in the Philippines that have skating rinks.

And yeah, can't imagine anything more boring than watching the opening ceremonies.

The opening ceremony has an artistic portion that's even more interesting than the rest of the ceremony. Remember the Mr. Bean in the 2012 Olympics? Although the parade is interesting for me as well, that's just me. I'm a sucker for spectacle. :p

Now to go back on topic...

I have been thinking, since Germany's UA is Free Imperial Cities, would it somehow change to fit the loyalty mechanics? I have a feeling we don't have a full picture of which civs would have their abilities change for R&F. The current ability for Germany does feel a bit boring. Like Civ5 India boring.

When a curling game is on, play as Scotland.

After all, curling originated in Scotland and before every major curling game, Scotland the Brave is played with a live bagpipe band. Yes, the same Scotland the Brave that is Robert the Bruce's theme.

Oh, and for women's hockey, Arirang is played for the unified Korean team. Yes, the same Arirang that is Seondeok's theme (and Sejong's theme).

The GG would have to be from the same era as Genghis. It can't be Shaka. It could be a Scottish leader like William Wallace, but I think the new GG is Inca. Having Pachacuti as a GG would be a pretty big giveaway towards their exclusion.

Or maybe it's just Ed being Ed, who knows.
I've lost track - did we ever figure out who was replacing Genghis as a Great General?
