[R&F] Rise and Fall General Discussion Thread

Depends. If there are no or barely barbarians, you might as well take the scout card for a while. :p
Also if you end up getting a second scout from a tribal village then it can be worth it; like if you find a natural wonder with a scout and get the xp bonus from that doubled then that's pretty huge, or more commonly just double xp from moving to new tribal villages is also good

That said, yes I will sit with the +5 CS vs Barbs card >95% of the time as well. If you play an Island Plates map though then there might not be any barb spawns on your starting island for very long and then that card can become a bit useless

But the real question is: Is there a first look coming up in 13 minutes?

Looks like there's nothing.

Edit: No I don't want christmas smileys in my posts.

can't imagine they'd put out another video this soon
Yes - it might be a surprise to people on this site who obsess over steam depot changes but I'd be surprised if 30% of their intended audience knew there was an expansion announced, we're not called Fanatics for nothing!!

Talking about depots I see they added 38 achievements for the expansion.
38 hidden achievements remaining
Details for each achievement will be revealed once unlocked

I've been a persistent critic of Civ VI, but I will say that the last patch was the first to significantly improve the game since release and Steam reviews tend to overemphasise early impressions simply because more people buy and comment immediately post-release than they do as time goes on. There also don't seem to be many post-patch Let's Plays out there, but it's at least worth watching a partial Let's Play session to get an idea of the game. I played a session through to completion and then followed up with a second that I'm now mid-way through - that's not exactly a stellar endorsement, but it represents a much greater time commitment I've been willing to invest in post-patch Civ VI than I felt the game warranted before.

The AI's still the worst it's been since at least post-first patch vanilla Civ V, AI civs are lacking in identity (a hurdle I've struggled to get past), the UI is poor (and, for cultural victory, maddengly difficult to interpret), every victory condition just amounts to bucket-filling with a different resource, and the eureka hunt aspect promotes counterimmersive min-maxing, but if you're bored with whatever version of Civ you're currently playing or have explored all it has to offer, Civ VI has finally reached the point where it feels and mostly plays like a 'real' Civ game, while at release I'd have compared it more closely to Beyond Earth.

Thank you for this reply. It sounds like Civ VI is taking steps in the right direction but it still doesn't sound worthy of dropping a significant amount of money on it. Perhaps with the new expansion, a few more patches and a nice discount it may be worth it. For now, I'll stick with Civ IV mods.

I think that's an entirely fair perspective, even if others disagree, but also what is "significant money" to one person is quite different to someone else. All we can say is what our own value judgement is and respect people who come to a different conclusion. Personally I intend to ask for it as a birthday present in April

I'm probably one of the few who is excited about the new music that will be added for the eight Civs in this expansion.

I won't be in the States to play the expansion when it comes out. I know the countries I will visiting have Steam, but I will hold off on buying the expansion.

The music is always top-notch.

Also: will there be a new theme for the expansion? It will be a shame to lose Sogno di Volare, but if it's just as good, that's certainly something to look forward to...

To be fair, so did Civilisation IV, the first game that really kicked ICS to the curb, whilst simultaneously scrapping the corruption system. Were it up to me, the Civ4 "No. Of Cities" & "Distance from Capital" maintenance system would get re-introduced. Then bring in a variety of "legal" buildings which-aside from increasing loyalty-would also be able reduce these two modifiers.
...
Civ1 to Civ3 all had corruption, & yes it was a horrible mechanic. One which didn't even achieve its goal of killing off Infinite City Sleaze. It was Civ4 that dealt the killing blow to that particular exploit.....whilst still making Wide a viable strategy for the empire with a sufficiently strong economy.
...
Here is hoping that other "neccessary evils" will pop up again in the game-like Slavery, Caste System & Plague.

Gah! :undecide: But not unexpected...

I'm a bit cautious about anything designed by someone who claims "the A.I. in VI has improved quite a bit", let alone someone who said that even earlier in Civ VI's life cycle. By the measures players care about the AI as of the latest patch isn't up to Gods & Kings standard, and specifically it's both worse at protecting settlers and makes less of an effort to prioritise capturing players' civilians.

This isn't simply a jab at the AI once again - if the designer in charge of the expansion really doesn't understand that there are major issues with the AI relative to the last release, including in specific areas he refers to, then either something has gone wrong elsewhere in the code that prevents the AI from operating as intended, or he genuinely feels they've done an adequate job with it despite objective evidence to the contrary in regard to the specific behaviour he mentions. That reduces my confidence that AI behaviour issues may go unsolved in the expansion.

That he said it pre-release actually makes me worry about the comment less. I'm sure Anton's had plenty of time to rethink those words :)

So.. As a Dutch/American dual national, the day I bury my father in New York, after not having been here in years, we get a trailer with the Dutch Flag waving/falling off of the Statue of Liberty. There has to be some symbolism here...
