Rise of the Homos(Development Thread)

I saw this thread a day or so ago and tought it was a joke. I saw all the replies and noticed who posted it and decided to click on it. LOL, Rise of the Homos! What were you thinking?

Anyway, it is a great idea with an poorly-worded name. I'd really be interested in seeing this come to fruition. Maybe you should call it something else though. Like Butt:):):):) Hunks 5!

Maybe the mod name should like Prince's name change. Just some symbol. :spank:  :viking:

I really want to make it clear though I have nothing against anyone's sexual practices. I just thought some crazy name that sticks out. Otherwise I figure the thread would be buried in others no time. At least the name may keep people posting and thinking about the idea. I just hope it amounts to something more than just discussion about the name eventually.

You are aware that modern man didn't really appear until 100,000 BC or so? Neanderthal man disappeared sometime during the last Ice Age.

Why not just put "the Palaeolithic Era (Old Stone Age)"? That way you're being accurate and you're educating them. After all, if they don't know what "palaeolithic" means, they still won't know without being told.

200,000 years most people guess. I am being modest even at 150,000. Now maybe I should change the starting period to later date that they leave Africa. If you explain why 100,000 then maybe I could find a reason for using that date.

Here is the first non-wiki source I find from a .edu site.
http://anthro.palomar.edu/homo2/mod_homo_4.htm

Neanderthal I am thinking the last information places them extinct between 50,000-40,000 years.

I will change it to that.

That very same site places Neanderthals as existing until at least 26,000 BC, whereas Wikipedia suggests that Homo floresiensis survived until 10,000 BC.

Homo Sapiens should include the S, as that is our correct genus :)

Well regardless if I place them a little earlier than perfect anatomical Homo Sapiens Sapiens then I can have some places for other species.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatomically_modern_humans

Like Homo Sapiens Idaltu

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_sapiens_idaltu

I am thinking just rare variants appearing for something to do. So that you are playing the one line that is Homo Sapiens Sapiens. I don't know what the ranges should be for each yet, but I am thinking by adding more eras I can limit what times the different species appear. If you interested maybe you could give what you think for times periods of other species that should appear and disappear.

Edit: This is meant to be a very simplified version of the evolution so we can have something entertaining to do during this period.

2 Edit: Yes I am leaving off the "s" at the end of Homo Sapiens. Anyway I added it.

Since the mod is going to go so far off from near reality....

Should some mythological civilizations be in the game?

Atlantis?(Somewhere west of Europe)

Hyperborea?(Somewhere in the Arctic)

Mu?(Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean)

Lemuria?(Somewhere in the Indian Ocean)

Kumari Kandam?(Somewhere in the Indian Ocean)

I worked out maybe some possible ideas for some to be included as some splinter civilizations. I think they could fill some holes in places to make in interesting to have a "what if" scenario for your civilization changing to one of these.

I am going to use these estimates.

Of course, MYA is an obsolete unit now, since they've switched to the SI annum (one year). We now deal in Ka, Ma and Ga (one thousand, one million and one billion years).

Ok. And....what of your saying? Who is they? Anthropologists?

Geologists and whoever it is who deals in these units :P

Well they were using mya in my anthropology classes in the United States, and that was 6 years ago. Maybe it has changed.

@everyone
I am sending up a stripped down mod. This is just to remove most of the default Civ4 settings. I am going to try to build a dll and add the camp later. I thought this may be of use to others though as is.

I want to start making some Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis units.I would like to get rid of that darn club and make some units with the basic tools matching the time.

I will need to populate the mod with some animals as well, but that will be a little harder finding animations I assume. Anyway I am going to try them when I get the chance.

I have some era ideas now. This is the best I could think of so far to distribute the eras to correspond to extinctions and technologies while trying to keep it simple.

Code:
[B]Timeline approx Era Tools Extinct Species[/B]

175,000-100,000 Acheulean Axes
100,000-50,000 Levallois Spearpoints Homo rhodesiensis
50,000-25,000 Aurignacian Blades Homo erectus
25.000-12,000 Magdalenian Microlith Homo neanderthalensis
12,000-6,000 Neolithic Ground stones Homo floresiensis
6,000-3,000 Copper Age
3,000-1,500 Bronze Age
1,500-500 Iron Age

Well, what little I know of the period suggests that the Chalcolithic Period (the Copper Age) is also known as the Aeneolithic Era. The time periods look fine though.

Well the name could be changed, but copper is simpler to understand because of the metal that comes in use. It really does not matter to me that much what the name is. I just want each era to somehow clearly state what primary metal/stone technique comes into use.

The one thing that I am concerned with is the times that would come after this. Should I have the later eras smaller? I mean this is already 7. If I would continue it is no telling how many I could have. But anyway I am going to worry about that later and just have this end to begin with at the end of the iron age.

What later eras?
Don't say, this mod should go until the future is reached.
It would make sense, when it would be finished after the iron age, or even with the copper age.

I am saying first I get to the Iron age. If that works and there is a mod. Then I may extend on eras as I go. Yes I mean starting with the era after the Iron Age. Future I don't know about. I will just see.
