Rise of the Homos(Development Thread)

I think "Rise of the Homonidae" is a better if less accurate title.

Seems quite interesting, and I think you should keep the title, it's catchy.

I thought it was catchy. I mean a name you would not forget.:)

Anyway I had a conflict in the last file with the "dynamic city radius" module. Sorry I just updated it. I need to still get the camp producing research commerce.

Maybe you could do some type of play on the Rise of Mankind thing. Like Dawn of Mankind, or something like that. Or just develop the mod and have a contest (have people PM you ideas) and pick a few that you like and havea poll?

I like simple titles, this one may not really work or pertain exactly to this, but you could call it Evolution or something like that.

Regardless I need a mod to name really first. If anyone checks out what I did so far tell me what they think of the camp. I don't have high exceptions of completing this. Here is another title already used before "Planet of the Apes"

I'd spring for Genus Hominis or "birth of mankind". "Rise" in the sense you're looking for is probably crescere.

I want this mod to live. Maybe later on we could explore other species reaching human like capabilities. I really know nothing of modding but hey I like to test mods. Plus I've always wanted this kind of mod. Please expand it past iron later on. Just my 2 cents.

How about this idea? How does going a little more fantasy sound. I was thinking about adapting the mana from Fall from Heaven perhaps to represent special places for your people to control. For example a cave would hold some important mana for your people.

I am wanting to add a cave feature as well so you can use it as some important holding point that you can build these like cave art. More of a really dumbed down culture idea. You have more culture by controlling more caves. It does not have to be just caves, but that is the first thing that came to mind.

I want to see what the mod will look like afterwords to see what would be the best name. The one new name I did think of is "Becoming Human". I mean the mod will be around becoming stereotypical human.

Again this will take a while to make. I noticed some good animal art in Fall Further that could be used already. I want to use the screen layout as in Fall Further if using mana. I am need of serious help to do this mod. Anyone I mean. XML people have plenty they could do with techs, but I need to get a working camp first. If someone has a better idea and can do it I am willing to change things. Well just let me know of any ideas.

I tried to make something to explain what I am thinking for civilizations. This is just a rough outline. It is not a finished idea. I just wanted to begin brainstorming so I write some possible ideas of how one tribe could become nearly 120 or so.

The civilizations are not based on time but more on where different civilizations were if on a "what if" tech tree. For example the Olmecs and Sumerians would start about the same time in this idea. And again this is just a beginning idea it will be altered. If it is hated(like probably) then I will scrap the idea.

This idea needs to be placed in a shelf for a little while. I don't want to commit the time to it unless there is some more interest and help. It just seems a lot work for little point. If anyone wants to lend a hand on it I will be around. I can talk about it then otherwise there is no real way this is going to get done.

I would definitely help, except I'm working on my own mod right now. Maybe when I'm finished though.

If you want to help...Tell me what you want in this. I need some feedback on the civilizations for one, and if any fantasy elements should be in the mod. What do you think about only static leaderheads? I am not against regular leaderheads I just see no way of really doing them all for civilizations I have in mind.

I am not saying I am not going to try when I can, but I seriously need some SDK help. I am just going to put off the SDK for while which means I really don't have anything for others to work with until I have a dll.

I could try my hand on units though perhaps, but I need some feedback on what should be in it. I can think of animals and members of the homo genus. Should dinosaurs rarely be found? Anyway I would like to hear what should or should not be in this.

yea johny, I'd like to see this mod come to be, but also very busy with ACW and real life. Perhaps in a few months I could assist as well. I'm mainly an XML monkey, but i can do some python and any art thats not 3d.

Static LH's are fine. I don't really even care that much about that. I don't have much to offer as far as research or knowledge of this time period though, sorry. I am also trained with some programming experience, not really great at c++ but I can understand most of it. I'm actually in the process of trying my hand at modifying the SDK, if I get good at it I could be of more assistance at some point.

anyhow, good luck with this

I can do something for units and art in general. I mean I going to try to find pics for other Hominidae myself to try and do some texture work on humans. I see some nice animals in FfH that could be brought in as well as others around civfanatics. I can take and modify these animals slightly for other mammals. Dinosaurs I am wondering if I can do, but I am wondering if they are wanted.

Just I mainly need to know what should be in the mod or not. Should I have an Atlantis civ for example? Or other possible mythological civilizations? Should I have some form of magic as an early idea for use of caves and other features to spice it up?. I was thinking of mushrooms for a resource for example that increases your production of cave art. Are these bad ideas?

Well, I can make LHs, it will obviously be a little wait time though as I work on my mod but I assume that this wouldn't be finished for a few months anyway so that should be fine. The LHs should be easy enough to make considering the time-period we're talking about here, I mean there won't be heavily ornate costumes or anything so it shouldn't be difficult at all.

I think you should avoid fantasy as much as possible. You might want to somehow integrate events (like ice ages and stuff) and maybe attach them to prehistoric belief systems (like animism or whatever) but I am not sure if you should go too far beyond that. This could be cool without that.

As far as your mushroom idea goes, I think you should expand upon that and have it work with the religions somehow. I mean we could seriously revamp the religion system here. I think we would really need to make animals much more important, obviously they'd be around for all eras, but you should have to kill/hunt them for certain things you need, like food and clothing. I also saw something really cool in the American Civil War thread, where they have the climate change to represent seasonal change. You can put an ice-age in here. You should also have flooding occur (there are accounts of great floods all over the world).

I also think aspects of the Mongol Camp should be utilized. To make this really work well though will require a massive overhaul to the game. But having said that, I would really love to help, I have made units and buildings before. But my specialty is LHs. Of course by the time I get around to helping you on this I will have had more Python and SDK knowlege under my belt too, but probably not enough to pull off a lot of this stuff.

Please, in the name of all that is holy, leave anything remotely dinosaurian 65 million years and more away from this mod. As far as I'm concerned, that's a complete "deal-breaker", so to speak.

I would quite like the idea of spiritualism, animism and so on as primitive religions (or maybe the Thunderer, the Mammoth, the Rivergod, the Pyre and so on). I'm also not adverse to having primitive magic from specialist shaman units to spice things up.

Absolutely no dinosaurs in any form, though.

I totally agree with this. It might be cool to have some crazy ancient animals though, but not from the time of the dinosaurs. Like the Gigantopithecus for example.

Well, you could have early humans as their own civilisations. Homo Neanderthalensis, Homo Floresiensis, Homo Sapiens and so on.

As for animals, you could have the woolly mammoth, the sabre-tooth tiger and so on. Megafauna ahoy!
