Rise of the Homos(Development Thread)

Well just the camp producing units in the download. Nothing new yet. I will not be able to mod for a few months.

My computer is in a box right now. I am rolling a dice and sending through the mail to USA. I am have a long journey ahead of me. I sending all of my things from Germany to Southeast US and I am moving to the Northwest US. So after I get in the US and I get my lease straightened out....I need to drive cross country and gather my things.

So anyway I have no time to mod. If anyone wants to work on this...I will be back and can help. Just no way I can do anything at the moment. I am open to any ideas if someone wants to give a crack at it.

Yes, welcome!

I returned to the land of living.

Now the question is to move this on to Civ5 or not.

I have had some request to do it on Civ5. So if you really love this idea.... jump in and give me your thoughts. Early is best time to begin on a mod.

I have the guy who wrote the modular code for the WoC Mr.Genie interested in a civ5 version of this idea.

It is just a matter of the Civ5 SDK really to me at this point. Most people will probably move on to Civ5.

I have my reservations on Civ5 as well, but if enough people want to jump in help on this idea...it will probably be better to progress on it in the long run.

Anyway I am looking to form a team of people otherwise this mod will never see the light of day.

I lost some attachments somehow. So I hope to update the animal pics when I get new ones. Sorry about some of the missing pics. I would like to know what happened to them, but anyway sorry to everyone.

I finally find the mod I've been looking for only to find it's still in development. :crazyeye:

The following is something I posted at another (RPG) thread, but the pictures are cool [edited to include ideas from other posts this premise]:

I always thought it might be interesting if the humans were the "elves", with other hominids being used for the other "less-advanced" races. I'll concede that the non-human brains should be bigger/better than in the originals, but they needn't look all that human, nor should one slavishly require them to be historically accurate in all ways (Gigantopithecus was essentially a bigger, upright gorilla, but your "orcs" can be savage carnivores if you want).

My candidates?
gigantopithecus.jpg

Gigantopithecus = Ork

evi_cromagnon_large.jpg

Homo Sapiens (Cro-Magnon Man) = "Elf"

neanderthal-3.jpg

Neanderthal = "human" (primary protagonists)

Australopithecine-1.png

Australopithecine = Dwarf

Charlie-White_img_1.jpg

Homo Habilis (~ the height of Australopithecine but more slender) = Gnome

hobbitman1.png

Homo Floresiensis = Hobbits

I was actually thinking about how cool it would be to have a mod like this.. i saw the title and made a O_O face and thought "dude i want this soo bad"
an idea that i have is that you could put in a whole new era as the first one you star out in, and only one "tech" called Sentience that would take you a long time to research. And instead of a city/camp you get a cave, which is the only place you can settle, and have those randomly placed around the map. And then have to find foraging spots, which run out really fast. It would be cool if there was a system that made food/starvation/population extremely important. Like if one of your "caves" doesn't eat for a turn, you lose alot of population, which would mean not enough people to forage for food. And instead of other civs there are other groups of apes in other caves,which can help you forage or help kill predators (and predators include leopards, lions, rhinoceroses, etc.. and those would be a serious threat because they can wipe out a cave's population.) then in place of barbarians would be small groups of other species of apes. Then after you finally complete researching sentience, a message comes up saying since you have so many caves with high population, your group breaks up into early civs, each with one city.

I agree the hominids could fit into a rpg style to replace the Tolkien races. I think there is enough nonfantasy to be compelling enough though to not use magic or etc. But now just using the best expectations for each species like Netherlands being much more advanced then Homo Sapiens in making tools in the beginning is quite reasonable.

The jump from cave to city does not make much sense though. At this point in time they were losing the need for caves as shelter. But having caves on the map to be like prebuilt castles that could be used by a camp for increased protection makes some sense. I mean this is a much later in time where I am would like to begin. Homo Erectus was already eating other Australopithecines at this time. I mean humans I doubt ever were in competition with chimpanzees is similar. But if we are talking about other species in the Homo genus then they are more on equal footing.

I have been thinking more now about the idea, and the most important thing really is fresh water resources. Then next food. But I need to think out some logical system really on how water would effect a moving city. I would like it to be necessary for a camp to have to have water which means more techs would need to be learned to move around more freely.

Anyway thanks for the interest. I've been fairly busy in real life. I am curious as to how modifiable Civ5 will be. Well I hope I can get a decision not too long after Civ5 is released. Thanks again

This actually looks quite fun. My only problem is that the choice of civs that evolve are kind of limited... can you add more?

The Civilizations are just what I am guessing at this point I would like to be at the beginning of the Neolithic period. I am thinking tons after that. But of course I am not going to make leaders like in Civ5 or like in Civ4 for each. Each will eventually turn into something you are more familiar with.

I may or may not mod this into Civ5. I have some supporters that are not posting on these forums who are interested in programming the Civ5 but are waiting on the release to see how easy it is. A lot of things are planned to be brought back that looked to be cut out that were found in Civ4. Something that is like health and returning happiness back to individual cities. Water may shape more into a quantified resource. Anyway I will say more if any further development.

Hey johny, I'm very interested in delving into both of your projects, this and the Sporifying one. Sent you a PM.

Good. I hope we I get the rest of the crew in here so we can place more ideas on the table. There will be a new name for the mod. How does a Russian name sound?

фабула истории земли

Well we are looking for original names. The means more or less the "History of the Earth". Although I do not know Russian. This is from someone in the group that does.

We will have a domain for the new mod. The new mod will be named Fabula Terra. The two principle features will be civilizations evolving like in my Sporified idea. The other will be a more realistic trade and resource system.

Water will probably be a replacement for health, and we are looking into having a climate changing model.

Well I belive we should start a thread on Fabula Terra on the CiV5 forum Johnny Smith wanna do the honours?

I will or somebody else. I need to make a coherent statement:lol:. I need to summarize I mean what we are planning.

I am not the best at explaining usually, but if no one else does I will start a thread eventually.

I am posting a new timeline that I think is good for Fabula Terra. Let me know if anyone feels different.

These are possible times if we go before permanent cities are built.
