Rise of the Machines

2800: I look around, switch governor off commerce (adds no time to tech, but makes worker done faster)

2760: Briefly ponder attacking Montezuma's warrior who's hanging out, but figure that's only a good idea if I can ACTUALLY BUILD UNITS. :dubious: (emphasis added to remind myself, not other) Instead, I send my warrior to the southwest.

2720: Warrior walks slowly SW

2680: Warrior walks slowly SW. Discover Agriculture :) , Start on Animal Husbandry (done in 15 or so I think)

2640: Ho-Hum. Warrior walks slowly SW.

2600: Warrior explores, fascinated by his surroundings. :crazyeye:

2560: I meet Alexander (who came from the west, but not northwest), and tell him that we'll take his filthy peace for now. (I failed screenshots on all the leaders I met... oh well)

2520: Warrior walks more.

2480: Warrior walks.

2440: Warrior walks. :coffee:

2400: We have crushed the will of one of our human subjects and instruct him to work the fields! Send worker NE to corn, start farm. Switch production to settler (not a lot of options, and a second city would help us with research)

2360: Warrior walks around, runs into a scout of Montezuma's

2320: Warrior moves.

2280: More of same.

2240: etc.

2200: A little more exploring: This image shows roughly our knowledge of the world - ok, for some reason I took that picture a few turns before the end of my turn, but oh well. Not much changed, and you can see the changes in the lame-o dotmap below

Civ4ScreenShot0001.JPG

2160: Movin' the warrior around.

2120: Get nervous about all the enemy warriors exploring near Delhi, and mis-step by moving warrior back one towards the capital. Then I decide they're not going to attack, and regret my move. Our workers finishes a corn farm, settler production time reduced to 13

2080: Animal Husbandry Done! We declare all of the animals to be husbands! Our massive machine minds begin pondering the secrets of "writing" (18 turns to complete). NOTE: Should we grab hunting so we can build beaver camps? Each one that we actually use would bring 3 more commerce... not too shabby. Animal Husbandry reveals horses. There's one close to us, and it turns out that Monty has horses already within his territory.b:( I move the worker to 2N of Delhi and start chopping the forest to get that settler out of there

2040: I meet Bismarck, give him peace. Toku's warrior still scouting around

2000: Not much.

So: should have a settler getting done soon - when finishes, settler should be done in 2 or 3 turns. Since we have no barbs, should be ok to just send it out - I doubt AIs will start trying to jack us up quite yet.

We need more research, IMO - Construction is currently projected for 62 turns. Another thing that could help is working on a wonder - it would let Delhi grow, we might possibly get it, and if not, we'll get cash out of the deal. Anyway, I'll stop speculating about the things someone else gets to decide, with the exception of:

this poorly constructed dotmap: Red would give us the copper, although I don't know why we need it. If it were placed one SW (the open red circle), there'd be more food and 3 more productive tiles (sorry the screenshot is so far off - I haven't used them much before).

dotmap.JPG

Also, amusingly enough, there is "crazy blue dot," which would give two gold resources, an oasis (hard to see on there), and a lake tile. Of course, it couldn't do anything else. Still, could be a small commerce town?

IamSid, you're up.

RedDot would be a great spot for a city, gold is +3cpt +1 happiness, corn is +2fpt and +1hpt, copper is +3ppt; and we're not even discussing the plains and grasslands around it, can you say potential powerhouse? I'd much rather have the copper first, so we can whip axemen should we need to. All that and no border smushing. Blue dot is a would be decent, the oasis is freshwater and give health and food; though I'd move the city one space S and one space E onto that hill for defensive purposes.

I have no real opinion on the horsies.

I also think we should decide on one of the AI's to ally ourselves with, then stab him in the back when we have destroyed a few other civs.

Hunting wouldn't be a bad idea, gives another decent unit we can whip and we can work the beavers. Sailing is another good idea, so we can get those crabs and be able to build a lighthouse for Delhi. we should try to leave some forests in place in each city for both health and production reasons.

I second the move to red dot as our second city, does anyone else have a spot they'd like to see next?

On the tech front, it looks like currently math stands at 45 turns. That is a bit too long. :) I agree that we should backfill the tree a little bit, and research techs like Fishing, Hunting, and maybe even the Wheel, because Red Dot is not on the river with Delhi.

Also, I agree on Wonder production... After all, +50% to wonder speed is our trait, let's use it, eh? :hammer: The bad news, however, is that there is no stone or marble in sight. I think we should look around to the NE of Delhi, there might be something there. The warrior is pretty close to the city any way.

Totally agree with wonder construction, and seeing as this is only Noble, we even stand a fair chance at getting some. I'm starting to think this won't be as tough as I'd first thought. War will be interesting with catapults as our primary unit for the early years, but like you said in a previous post, Vovan, with massive stacks... we should be able to deal out serious amounts of pain.:hammer:

It would figure that we pulled peaceful civ, and are surrounded by agressives -- this is gonna be a blast!:ninja: That fast worker is going to come in handy, and being spiritual as well, no anarchy will be useful, methinks.

-IceLion

Got it! Will play soon.:salute:
Any ideas for me..

(How do you post saves?)

Ideas: found a city at red dot, and don't get into any wars. :) On the research front, get some basic techs, like Hunting.

To post a save, you can just attach it to your post. (Use the "Manage Attachments" button.) Alternatively, you can use the Upload service. The link is on the very bottom of the forum page ("Upload File", next to chat room. ;)), though the little description thingey says they prefer the use of the forum upload feature for all files smaller than 500K.

Just a suggestion get catapults soon as we have no military and Monty as a neighbor.

Couple of thoughts in the meantime:

I think Ceaser would be a good civ to get in all nice and cushy with, don't know about you guys, but I would rather NOT have to deal with his Praetorians.

For war plans, I'd say either Toky (Samurai) or the dirty Germans (Panzers) are first to lose to the mighty hive.

Do we want to for Sailing before or after Mathematics?

-IceLion

Wait I think I might have already gotten Sailing... So go for Math.

IceLion,

I would say it depends on whether according to the rules we can build ships or have to whip them. :) I'd say we can build them (you can't see a person there, can you?), and in that case, Sailing might be a good investment for exploration purposes. Math is still 25 turns away. I think we really need to concentrate on growth here. Demographics shows that we are below average on crop yield . Since we can only make military units by whipping, I'd say it would be a good idea to rectify this. :) Also I would suggest that Delhi build a Library next so it can grow some. (Or a work boat if we don't have to whip it to get those crabs!)

BTW, IamSid, what happened to the dot map there? :) It would have been good to found Bombay one tile to the West, as per hamtastic's map. The way it is now, not only does it intersect Delhi's radius, which for us is not a good thing, since we want to grow as much as possible, but most importantly, it doesn't have copper in its radius!

Any way... I suggest we found the next city at the Pink Dot or thereabouts. Plenty of food from that river is available. Precise position should depend, however, on what's in the fog there. Like I said before, it would be really good to explore what's going on in the darkness over there to the NE of Delhi for the purposes of possible marble or stone presence.

Damn!!! I thought that was the dot!! My bad. I did not have it on grid mode..

I was thinking more about a Lighthouse for Delhi for +1 food on the water tiles. Exploration right now, at least to me, is pretty low priority but I agree with libraries. We have to get Math soon as it offers the only unit we can *build* for the time being, but 25 turns is lot of wait to be sure. We are landlocked with not 1 but 3 aggressive civs, and 2 civs that have a nasty ancient time UU, we need military sooner rather than later, IMHO.

I'll look at the save in about 20 mins (the time it takes me to get to my computer at home) and see what we see.

-IceLion

Well, it's a bit frustrating about the dotmap, but we can take comfort in the idea that we may want to whip units occasionally, so we shouldn't have population sizes that are THAT big. Plus, when borders eventually expand, we'll get copper. I would actually advocate settling more to the west first, unless there's something good under the fog. I'd like to avoid Montezuma: in my experiences, he attacks constantly. I actually think Bismarck and Tokugawa might be decent allies, but basically I think it depends on who gets what religion. Since we won't have any, we should ally with whoever ends up being odd man out for religion (maybe?). I think we should plan on trying to get construction before anything else now and after that build giant stacks of catapults, though...
