RK-08: Atomic Betty

Okay, my turnset is being wrapped up now...erm, how is it?

One word: Interesting.

So...Turn 0: Things are not well in jolly ole England. Our economy is in a shambles, and this is not the time I'd want to go to war. But as we seemingly don't have a choice in the matter (That'd be High Politics and Realism at work) I have a look at the military situation.

"Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum." - Vegetius

Concern #1: Fortress Tonsberg. A small city, unproductive city (in thier hands) on a hill, guarded by two longbow men. That will hurt to take with Maces. That said, those two are also not going anywhere. So, my plan is to bypass the city, as it poses no current threat.

Concern #2: Jungle: The road to the south is paved with Jungles, which are more or less fortresses by themselves. We can be happy they have not built roads. If their troops get in their, I'm not attacking them till they get out.

Concern #3: Troop speed: We are still moving at three squares a turn...a low reinforcement speed, especially when troops have to come from London...so, we are switching to engineering as I don't quite understand what good printing press is going to do us as we have hardly any cottages.

Concern #4: No Medic: Erm...'nuff said. We needed one, and quickly, so I figured I'd get a few mobile horse medic units...

Anyway, I marshall my forces, as the attack plan sees me attacking Jelling, Birka and Roskilde in quick succession...

Turn 1: I continue to marshall northeast of Jelling...I also rush a Christian Monastery in our Sci. city.

Turn 2: Deciding our economy needs help more than the small military assiatance York could provide, I start on a Market. Oh, I also decided that I'd rather be pals with Fred and Wang than Alex as they neatly surround him, so I decide to feed the fire by trading with Fred, in the hope he'll agree to help with Alex betrays us. That, and I declare war on Ragnar and move toward Jelling, as our medic will be there in a turn. I rush Market in York as it was stagnating and we need the cash. I trade Horseback Riding with Wang for 90 Gold so I don't have to move the Sci Slider due to bankruptcy. It'll keep us for mabye 12 turns.

Turn 3: I stormed Jelling, Sword and Catapult lost, but city fell and Medic arrived.

Turn 4: Naval battle won off Jelling and two Longbowmen moved out of Birka into the Jungke...*sigh*...I'm keepign an eye on them. I started York on a Monestary, as we need them.

Turn 5: Ragnar has chosen to empty Birka, and send his bowmen into the Jungle. I empty Jelling as bait, keeping the army outside and hope to slaughter them in the clear.

Turn 6: Ze plan works, and the remaining Longbowman retreats, presumably to Birka. I advance with my force toward Birka while building Cataputs. Can't wait till Trebs.

Turn 7: Sweeping towards Birka...Jelling comes out of revolt, I hope to whip a courthouse soon. I get Wang to attack Ragnar. Not that I'm expecting help, but it gives a diplo bonus, and Wang's city to the south of Birka gives Ragnar more of headache.

Turn 8: In comes Engineering, so our supply lines are a bit shorter. However, we've a large stack we can hardly pay for, so I start on Hagia Sophia in London. Yes, it's a wonder. But, we can't afford more military costs atm, and it's due in a few turns. I should have Birka shortly, and will switch out for a treb or two after I lose a few troops. Oh, we got a Scientist a bit back and I made an Academy in Nottingham with him. As for techs, I have gone for Divine Right as its nearly done and Islam hasn't been founded. I consdered Education, so we can build those Miltitary Academies, but that'll have to wait a bit. We've not a warlord yet anyway.

Turn 9: Hastings finishes Maceman, and I start on Harbour. Erm..I'm not sure what specialty we want this city to have..so we need to do something about that. Looks like a good commerce one though. Birka has been "rocked to 0". It's going byebye next turn. I send new recruits to Roskilde.

Turn 10: Birka falls at the cost of a Maceman and a Catapult. Hagia is due next turn. I move toward Roskilde. And, Islam is founded in...

Turn 11: Canterbury...Canterbury gets Islam, and I whip a Christian Missionary to send to London in prep for the Shrine we're about to get. With Divine Right comes the ability to build the Spiral Minaret...The next Engineer can do that, as it gives +2 per any Confu buildings, it may be enough to save our infrastructure.

Turn 12: I add Missionary to London, and I start the siege of Roskilde. Ths should not last long...Christian Shrine in one, Optics in three.

Turn 13: Optics in two, I add Shrine to York, and attack Roskilde...

Turn 14: My undicplined masse loses two maces at high odds but takes the city. We'll need to replace those eventually.

Turn 15: I upgrade a Caraval to start our sea trip, and move to a grove where I can march on Uppsala...then I bow and hand it over...

Final notes: I've seen nary a counterattack and the light defence I've seen suggests there will not be one. We've lost few troops. I reccomend a Mace and a few Trebs, though we hardly need it despertately. In four turns we will get a Engineer - unless we get really unlucky. If we do, use it to build the Minaret in York. Now...unto my concerns. While we take Ragnar, we MUST spread both Christianity and Confu to all our cities. Not only will it increase our money, but Confu religious buildings are needed as we expand to best use the University of Sankore and the Minaret. We also have a Great General. I figure we should use it the second we get Education. Hopefully we should be able to get Science to 80% soon. With anyluck someone will have Guilds eventually.

Best of luck ya'll!

Good work. Our economy is in the drink, yes, but the money from Ragnar will probably pull us longer. See if anyone has Guilds we can trade yet so we can start on Banking?

Printing Press will still help our couple of cottages and we may have gotten Fred to trade up Engineering if we all hate Alex that much.

Don't rush the Minaret. We don't need it and SciMeth will cut our wealth by a lot if we decide to get it. Taj Mahal or Statue of Liberty may be better.

On the subject of the Minaret...I agree, we should not rush it. We have time to finish the Forge, then build the Minaret. It just occured to me we've yet to build the FP, and could very well build Versailles...how about a nice palace in a nice central location in Ragnar's capital...would help economy...then FP in Greece...A productive continent..=)

Hmm... never thought about the Versailles. Excellent idea. How far are we from Divine Right, though? It may not be worth the detour.

We have Divine Right...We got Islam founded in Canterbury. =) All we need now is the Engineer.

As for a location, how does this plan sound...

We need to reprovision, and a state of war will only lead Ragnar to build more defences. So, we take Uppsala, and declare peace with Ragnar. Take Cheju from the backwards Wang as that city seems to be equi-distant with all of Ragnar's cities, and thus the best spot for the shiny palace. Then, build palace in Cheju, and wipe Raggy from the mainland. Then we can build up the south while getting ready for a march on Alexander...

I think we should just rush Versailles or Forbidden Palace somewhere in the middle of Ragnar and Alexander and Fred, instead of relocating our capital. London is just too ideal as a capital site and Cheju is just so-so...

Plus, I don't like the idea of alienating our only ally so early. I think we should actually fund Wang with techs and let him be our trading partner while we eliminate Ragnar, Fred and Alex. Plus, Wang IS Korea after all, let him be "South", we're North.

Did I say palace? Oi, I've got to stop talkin' Civ strategy at 4 AM. I meant Versailles. :p And Robo, ye have a point =)

Where do you think we should put it? Ragnar's capital?

Ok, shower taken. 12 turns played. I intended to round the turns, but I needed advice on the final turn. I will get to it later.

Turn 182/460 (1220 AD) [26-Dec-2006 11:51:17]

And we get a free worker!

IBT:
The Greek attitude towards England has changed from Cautious to Annoyed
Why? I'll tell you:
freddyhatesalexuj2.jpg

Freddy came asking for this. I looked at the screens and thought we could get more GPT from Freddy than Alex. And we all hate Alex!
I sold Freddy Fur for 6 GPT (instead of Alex's 1GPT) and next turn he came exchanging Wheat for Silk. I took it.

Turn 193/460 (1330 AD) - 26-Dec-2006 14:26:16
Remember that annoying city? Tonsberg! I took it here, but lost the log. I had 2 Trebs and 3 Maces. Only the last 2 Maces survived.

I made peace with Raggy after that. I tried to snag Music from him, but our friend Wang has it too.
He would take this deal:
wangdealla4.jpg

It's up to the next player (Ruff_hi) to take it or not! I also sold him Banana for 5GPT!

Turn 194/460 (1340 AD) - 26-Dec-2006 14:42:21
Tech learned: Education
Research begun: Philosophy (3 Turns)
Thats where I stopped. We can run 100% science and get Philo in 3 turns and starting selling Paper for money (Freddy has some good). We would have education on everybody, so Liberalism would be on the bag.
OR we can try waiting for someone else to research it while we research Guilds on the way to Banking and Economics. You guys decide!

And a save:

*smiles along with Frankor*

And can we set York to the Minaret after Caraval? Or the upgrade seems fairly cheap, perhaps we should upgrade our Triemes to them.

Yeah, my first choice was Liberalism. That's why I chose Philosophy. But in an offline game (Warlord level) I could get Steam Power as the free tech. I thought maybe we could delay it a bit, if something else is better. And 1 turn wouldn't make that much difference, now that I made peace with Ragnar as everyone was saying...
Our army is not that bad. We need just a few garrisons (longbows, maybe?) and a bunch of trebs.. London can spawn 1 each 2 turns.
When the peace treaty expires, we can open 2 fronts of battle. One coming from north going south and the other from the east going west. They could meet each other right on time to take Nidaros (that 18 pop city).
Well, he also has a city on an island southeast of that 10 pop city I took.
Oh! One more thing: as soon as you get Philo (if it's really the next tech), TRADE IT! Freddy has it too. If we don't trade it, he will.

Agreed, and the sooner the better! We need to put down Versailles fast, as the maintenance costs are extortionate atm...Uppsala alone's costing us a pretty penny.

Sorry, I haven't mentioned that ruff_hi, you are up..!

Roster:
1. Robo Kai
2. fbelintani
3. ruff_hi (up for 10-15)
4. frankcor (on deck)
5. vra379971

sorry guys - I'm going to need a skip

Kewl, I'll pick up the save this afternoon and take a turn at the helm. Anyone who wants to share preferences in how we should proceed, feel free to post and I'll check in when I pick up the save. For example:

Has the circumnavigation been completed by anyone? Should we invest some hammers/gold in getting two caravels out to get the bonus? If we're going to start a world-wide conflagration, the added naval mobility will be a big help.

Research: go for Liberalism free tech? And what do we want to chose if we get it? Or do we go after advanced military/power technologies?

War/peace: kewl the war for a while to build economy? Or proceed with conquering our continent sooner rather than later?

Discuss amongst yourselves, I'm getting verkelmpt.

We have one caraval out, and perhaps we can upgrade a trieme on our eastern coast to one.

I generally get nationalism after liberalism...

War...Proceed a.s.a.p. and destroy Ragnar. Right now, what's killing us is the maintenance of Ragnar's cities. Just getting down the Versailles/FP would restore a great deal of balance. Then...build away =)

Did it really take you 2:50 to play 8 turns? Or did you start the game and go and have a hot bath? :D

When I loaded the save the washing machine ringed and I went there. After I returned, my wife called saying lunch was ready.... You know... "One... more... turn..."... And then she yells at you! You don't have time to save and load up later! ;)

We have one caravel out heading west and York is producing another one. I can't remember how far it is...
About techs:
1- Get Philo and trade away. Maybe get Music from Wang for Philo instead of Paper may be better.
2- If we go to Liberalism, I usually get Astronomy as the Free Tech. We can trade resources overseas before we :nuke: everybody! But this time something got on my mind.... Is it possible to do a Rifling slingshot for our redcoats? I had NO time to check this out, so fell free to :whipped: me!

I'd say: CHAAAAAAAAAAAARGE. We need to have our continent before modern era, don't we????

Inherited turn 194/460 (1340 AD): As I took the helm of our Empire, I reviewed the list of what I understod to be our near term goals:

- Launch a 2nd Caravel and secure the circumnavigation bonus -- I upgraded a wounded (2.9/3) Tireme off the coast of Uppsala. I would send it off to the southeast, avoiding Ragnar's coastal tiles in case he has a Tireme or Galley that would try to attack it. I can't tell if any of the AIs have Optics yet, I could see that both Ragnar and Frederick can research Astronomy which might mean they do have Optics. But I guessed that the bonus will be safely ours.

- Get Liberalism before any AIs. We were three turns away from Philosophy. Liberalism was up next and estimated to take 9 turns. Again, I guessed this goal would be safely ours.

- Reduce our overhead costs by building Versailles and Forbidden Palace. Here's our continent:
atomic14.jpg

I marked out the corners of an equilateral triangle that approximated the ideal locations of Versailles and Forbidden Palace. I chose Ragnar's capital for Versailles because we'll get that site sooner than Munich and it might not be available if someone else built it first.

All our cities are net contributors of gold to our economy except for Roskilde(-2.63 :gold:/turn) and it was constructing a courthouse. We might consider building Versailles in Birka before we capture Nidaros and there was a Great Engineer sleeping in London but I did not see the need to rush. I aspired for the Ideal, not the Expedient and chose not to pull the trigger. No one else had Divine Right at that time so there was not much risk to waiting at that point in time.

- Eliminate Ragnar and the Celtic civilization. We had to wait 9 turns before our peace treaty with Ragnar expired. The bulk of our offensive force was in the south near Birka and in Uppsala. It required some healing and assembly, along with perhaps some additional siege weapons and screening/pillaging mounted units. I would work on preparing an invasion force that could successfully capture Nidaros and several other cities. In order to eliminate Ragnar, we'll need an amphibious capability because he has settled the island off the southeast corner of our continent. To that end, I ordered 2 Galleys from our west coast to sail around the northern cape. They'll take many turns to get there so I planned to also construct some Galleys/Galleons in our eastern coast cities. Meanwhile, our friend Wang was at war with Ragnar -- Ragnar would have little chance to rebuild while we did.

-Spread state religion to all our cities, for goodness sakes!

At Uppsala, I whipped construction of the Courthouse there. Maintenance costs were ll :gold:/turn there. Next it would need a Library or a Religion so it could eventually produce a cultural expansion.

I noted that we also had a Great General sleeping in London. I did a little homework and found where vra had banked him there, waiting for Education so he could construct an Academy there. We now have Nabruchanezzer Military Academy in London -- I wonder how that name fits on a t-shirt?

IBT: Phrygian (barbarian) was captured by Korea.

Turn 1 (1350 AD): Mauryan constructed a Library, started a Lighthouse(20). Uppsala constructed a Courthouse, started a Library)16) for the culture. We needed a religion in that city fast.

I ordered our wounded Caravel to start its journey across the unknown eastern ocean.

Turn 2 (1360 AD):

Turn 3 (1370 AD): We discovered Philosophy and I chose Liberalism, due in 5 turns at 100% research but we had sufficient gold reserve to do that for only 1 turn.

London constructed a University. I was tempted to build Heroic Epic there in only 1 turn (aided by a chopped forest on a hill on which our workers were constructing a mine) but I figured London was already able to crank out 1st line troops in short order -- why not help another city do the same? So I chose a Confucian Missionary(1) for Uppsala instead. Nottingham constructed a Harbor, started a Market(11).

Our western Caravel found Japan's cultural borders.
atomic15.jpg

Naturally, Toku was in character, annoyed at us already. Well, some day, he'll be furious with us, that's for sure ... hehh heh heh ... he said furious. He didn't have enough gold to make trading worthwile. He had no techs to offer but evidently had plenty of resources because we couldn't offer anything to interest him. Our Caravel was blocked from proceeding southwest and turned to the northwest in hopes of finding a passage -- get it? -- Northwest Passage?

Our eastern Caravel got this peek at Ragnar's island paradise:
atomic16.jpg

I checked out our trading options:
atomic17.jpg

By this time, Wang had changed his mind and wanted Divine Right (instead of Philosphy and gold) for Music. I thought to myself "Sure Wang. And be sure to build Versailles in Phyrgian (right next door to Munich) for the English Empire, thank you very much." I made the deal with him.

Alexander wouldn't speak with us. Frederick gave us 310 gold, just enough for us to run 100% research long enough to complete Liberalism, thank you very much. kaa ching!

Turn 4 (1380 AD): London trained a Confucian Missionary, started an Exporer(1). York trained a Caravel, started a Galley(5). The Explorer was intended be our insurance policy in case we couldn't sail around Toku's continent. Even if he's not needed for that, we would send him there on York's Caravel to find good targets for our future ICBM testing program, whatever they are.

Hastings' borders expanded, giving Tonsberg all the tiles it can work. Which was a good thing because Tonsberg has only 1 hammer it can work and it'll be eons before it can complete any cultural buildings.

I whipped the Market at Nottingham. I figured the additional income from our Shrine there will come in handy when our treasury was empty in 4 more turns.

Turn 5 (1390 AD): London trained the Explorer. I resisted the urge to build Notre Dame(8) and started work on another Confucian Missionary(1). Nottingham constructed the Market, started a Horse Archer(6). Jelling constructed a Granary, started a Forge(15). Roskilde Constructed a Courthouse, started a Forge(11).

Turn 6 (1400 AD): London trained a Confucian Missionary, started a Horse Archer(1). Hastings constructed a Courthouse, started Heroic Epic(7). It's our #2 hammer producer.

Our eastern Caravel spotted a pink border and zigged instead of zagged to introduce us to:
atomic18.jpg

Mao knew about Guilds but wouldn't trade the knowledge to us.

IBT: Tacitus wrote a book:
atomic19.jpg

Evidently, we were yet to meet the Most Powerful Civilization of the world. Hmmmm... could there be a crazy Aztec out there in the fog?

Turn 7 (1410 AD): London trained a Horse Archer, started a Confucian Missionary(1).

Our Confucian Missionary converted Uppsala -- it could now pump out one :culture:/turn and it cut 1 turn off the Library(6). A second Missionary converted Jelling.

Turn 8 (1420 AD): We got Liberalism and I chose Astronomy for the free tech to enable intercontinental trading and because it was the most expensive tech available.
atomic20.jpg

Don't ask me why but I thought it would be really kewl if we could carve spiral grooves on the inside of metal tubes and pack some gunpowder into one end of them and a projectile in the other end. So first, we needed to figure out what Gunpowder(5-7) was. Our scientists looked dazed and confused when I gave them my orders.

London trained a Christian Missionary (huh!? I thought I ordered a Confucian one :sigh: ), started a Maceman(1). Birka constructed a Market, started a Library(8). I traded cow to Mao for 2 :gold:/turn and Rice to Toku for 1.

Turn 9 (1430 AD): London trained a Maceman, started a Confucian Missionary(1).

How's this for a little suspense?
atomic21.jpg

Actually, our wounded Caravel had traveled further east after having to detour along the Chinese coast line and we would get the bonus in the next turn. As it turned out, we probably would have gotten the bonus without the upgraded Caravel. ::smoked::

Turn 10 (1500 AD): London trained a Confucian Missionary, started a Maceman(1). Canterbury constructed a Courthouse, started a Forge(15).

For the second time in my turnset, I got to hear the spooky chord music:
atomic22.jpg

Our Caravels received orders to begin exploring the new lands. The wounded one stopped at the southern tip of the other continent to heal for one turn.

That's my 10 turns. Our workers are beginning to run out of work to do. I've been ordering them to build roads in forests for the day when we'll be able to construct lumbermills, whatever those are.

We're more advanced than the AIs on the other continent so far but we've yet to meet the most powerful one. We're ready to go for the Celtic capital city but maybe we should build some garrison units for all our cities on our western borders. Ragnar is lowest in the power curve thanks to our friend Wang. On the other hand, Alexander is annoyed with us and the guy has a real wacko look in his eyes. Expect a backstabbing from him.

I see I'm not the only one getting itchy to introduce the world to Redcoats. The tech advisor is advising (60%/70% slider):

- Gunpowder(4/4)
- Guilds(5/5)
- Banking(5/4)
- Printing Press(6/6)
- Replaceable Parts(11/10)
- Rifling(15/13)

I don't really see a way to get rifling with a Liberalism slingshot. But we can be building redcoats in 44 turns, probably a lot less than that. Mao and Frederick will trade Guilds and we have a Scientist due to be born in 3 turns (81% odds). Can he lightbulb any of those for us?
